The Representation Of The Environment In Children's Literature, Becky Boudreaux May 2006

The Representation Of The Environment In Children's Literature, Becky Boudreaux

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This study is a descriptive research project which examines a purposeful census of the best selling children's books for 0-8 year olds in the United States in 2003. This cross-sectional study of these social artifacts evaluates the extent to which the ideologies of the environmental movement have been inculcated into culture. It evaluates how the environment is represented in children’s literature and the extent to which children's literature meets the goals of environmental education. Through narrative semeiotic analysis of the themes, as well as the manifest (text) and latent (pictures) content, varying degrees of pro and antienvironmental ideologies reflected by …

A Landscape Preference Study Of Campus Open Space, Ying Zhang May 2006

A Landscape Preference Study Of Campus Open Space, Ying Zhang

Theses and Dissertations

The current study is an empirical study of preference for campus open space around the drill field on Mississippi State University (MSU) campus. 83 students at Mississippi State University were selected as research objects. Based on the literature review, a research process was designed to employ VEP, content analysis and multivariate analysis---Biplot to explore the interested research problems. The study identified two most preferred landscape scene types - "Legibility" and "Coherence" using Kaplan?s "information processing model". A statistical analysis tool for multivariate analysis-Biplot was used to reveal the landscape preference patterns for campus open space as well as how certain …

Criticality Studies Of Dilute Plutonium Mixtures For Urex Processes, Denis Beller May 2006

Criticality Studies Of Dilute Plutonium Mixtures For Urex Processes, Denis Beller

Separations Campaign (TRP)

The completion of criticality experiments for mixtures of higher actinides (HA, includes neptunium, plutonium, americium, and curium) that will be created during the separation of used nuclear fuel has been identified as a requirement to construct prototype plants such as the Engineering-Scale Demonstration (ESD) and the Advanced Fuel Cycle Facility (AFCF) for the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP). GNEP is a program to develop a worldwide consensus to enable the expanded use of economical, environmental nuclear energy to meet growing electricity demand. In this program and the Advanced Fuel Cycle R&D program (AFC) that supports it, we are developing economic …

Odonates At The Clark County Wetlands Nature Preserve: A Look At Habitat And Relative Abundance, Erin Jolley May 2006

Odonates At The Clark County Wetlands Nature Preserve: A Look At Habitat And Relative Abundance, Erin Jolley

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The purpose of this study is to identify the various species, relative abundance and habitat of dragonfly and damselfly larvae at the Clark County Wetlands Park Nature Preserve (WPNP). An accurate assessment of these insects can be useful in interpreting potential indications of environmental problems at the Wetlands. From this data, necessary improvements can be made to the dragonfly habitat as well as the habitat of other surrounding organisms. Habitat identification is considered especially important because it is "structured by instream and surrounding topographical features, and is a major determinant of aquatic community potential" (Southwood, 1977). For purposes of this …

Student Self-Assessment: A Tool For Engaging Management Students In Their Learning, Andy T. Dungan, Leigh Gronich Mundhenk May 2006

Student Self-Assessment: A Tool For Engaging Management Students In Their Learning, Andy T. Dungan, Leigh Gronich Mundhenk

Organization Management Journal

This article discusses the use of student self-assessment (SSA) for formative and summative assessment in two undergraduate programs, a management program and a leadership program, to encourage students to become more engaged in their learning. Using action research, we used an iterative process of changing or refining our methods to accommodate the differences in our teaching environments, concluding that different methods may be desirable in different environments, and that students appear to benefit from SSA regardless of the method used. Five overlapping themes emerged in the data we collected: how SSA 1) provided students with the opportunity to see the …

Foraging Fruit Flies: Lagrangian And Eulerian Descriptions Of Insect Swarming, Joesph Majkut May 2006

Foraging Fruit Flies: Lagrangian And Eulerian Descriptions Of Insect Swarming, Joesph Majkut

HMC Senior Theses

In this work, I seek to model swarms of fruit flies, drosophila melanogaster, whose flights are characterized by straight flight segments interrupted by rapid turns called saccades. These flights are reminiscent of Levy-distributed random walks which are known to lead to efficient search behavior. I build two types of model for swarms of foraging fruit flies, whose behavior depends on swarm density and chemoattractant concentration, using rules inspired by experimentally observed flight patterns. First I will present a Lagrangian model where the path of each individual fly is tracked. I will also consider an Eulerian model where the fruit fly …
