Water, Development, And State Security In South Asia: Scenarios For China And India, Ray Chandrasekara, John M. Polimeni Jul 2006

Water, Development, And State Security In South Asia: Scenarios For China And India, Ray Chandrasekara, John M. Polimeni

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Conflict over water resources is rare and has not occurred for thousands of years. However, the dynamics in South Asia are changing so rapidly that a conflict in the not-so-near future may be unavoidable. Water shortages could have the nonlinear effects of food shortages, political instability, migration problems, and diminished economic growth. All of these factors, caused by water shortages, could be a driver of conflict in the region, causing territorial disputes. Global instability would be sure to follow as both the U.S., attempting to protect their national security interests, and China, reacting as the regional power, tries to intervene. …

Dams, Plants, Pipes And Flows: From Big Water To Everyday Water, Fiona Allon Jul 2006

Dams, Plants, Pipes And Flows: From Big Water To Everyday Water, Fiona Allon

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

This paper focuses on patterns of domestic water consumption. It develops an approach that emphasises the importance of seeing water use as part of a broader set of consumption practices associated with the space of the home, the garden and suburban living. Water consumption is considered as a practice that is embodied and embedded in daily life. The paper also presents the project Everyday Water as a case study of recent cultural studies research on domestic water use. The cultural approach adopted in the project represents a significant departure from much conventional resource and environmental management-based work. The Everyday Water …

Future City: More Than A Competition—It Grows Into A Campus Collaboration Project!, Susan K. Boyd

Staff publications, research, and presentations

A public event on campus can spark creatively on the part of campus organizations and be a real marketing win for all involved. A competition can also be the centerpiece of a learning experience for the campus and surrounding community as well.

When the Chair of Santa Clara University’s Civil Engineering department asked for library lobby space to display the regional winners’ models of the National Engineers’ Week-sponsored Future City Competition, little did he know that it would also evolve into a collaborative library exhibit and presentation.

This is how the university’s Civil Engineering department, University Library, Environmental Studies department, …

Unimodality, Independence Lead To Np-Hardness Of Interval Probability Problems, Daniel J. Berleant, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Hung T. Nguyen Jun 2006

Unimodality, Independence Lead To Np-Hardness Of Interval Probability Problems, Daniel J. Berleant, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Hung T. Nguyen

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many real-life situations, we only have partial information about probabilities. This information is usually described by bounds on moments, on probabilities of certain events, etc. -- i.e., by characteristics c(p) which are linear in terms of the unknown probabilities pj. If we know interval bounds on some such characteristics ai <= ci(p) <= Ai, and we are interested in a characteristic c(p), then we can find the bounds on c(p) by solving a linear programming problem.

In some situations, we also have additional conditions on the probability distribution -- e.g., we may know that the two variables x1 and x2 are independent, or that the distribution of x1 and x2 is unimodal. We show that adding each of these conditions makes the corresponding interval probability …

Permaculture Garden Design For The Cloud Forest School-The Centro De Educación Creativa, June 2006, Lauren Fifield

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

This is a proposal for the creation of a permaculture garden at the Cloud Forest School- Centro de Educación Creativa (CFS-CEC), in Monteverde, Costa Rica. This garden will be used for food production, but will also be used for educational purposes. Permaculture gardens teach students how to live with nature. They are able to produce food for themselves in a way that uses the least amount of land as possible, thus leaving this land for forest species. The garden provides various teaching tools such as native species, gap area, gardening techniques, mimicry complexes as well attracts various species. It will …

The catfish, Eremophilus mutisii, was cultured under different densities in artificial rainfall reservoirs at Caldas, Boyaca, Colombia. At capture, the average total length of the animals was 10 cm and the weight ranged between 9 and 10 g. These fish were in initial stages of sexual development. After a year in the reservoirs, they had increased in length and weight as follows (densities in parentheses): 5.22 cm and 27.23 g (0.5 individuals/m(2))); 1.98 cm and 8.79 g (1 individual/m(2)), and 2.45 cm and 0.82 g (2 individuals/m(2)). They were at the early stages of sexual maturity, and their condition …

Can Resilience Be Reconciled With Globalization And The Increasingly Complex Conditions Of Resource Degradation In Asian Coastal Regions?, Derek Armitage, Derek Johnson Jun 2006

Can Resilience Be Reconciled With Globalization And The Increasingly Complex Conditions Of Resource Degradation In Asian Coastal Regions?, Derek Armitage, Derek Johnson

Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

This paper explores the relationship between resilience and globalization. We are concerned, most importantly, with whether resilience is a suitable conceptual framework for natural resource management in the context of the rapid changes and disruptions that globalization causes in social-ecological systems. Although theoretical in scope, we ground this analysis using our experiences in two Asian coastal areas: Junagadh District in Gujarat State, India and Banawa Selatan, in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. We present the histories of resource exploitation in the two areas, and we attempt to combine a resilience perspective with close attention to the impact of globalization. Our efforts serve …

Science For Place-Based Socioecological Management: Lessons From The Maya Forest (Chiapas And Petén), David Manuel-Navarrete, D. Scott Slocombe, Bruce Mitchell

Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

The role humans should play in conservation is a pervasive issue of debate in environmental thinking. Two long-established poles of this debate can be identified on a preservation-sustainable use continuum. At one extreme are use bans and natural science-based, top-down management for preservation. At the other extreme is community-based, multidisciplinary management for sustainable resource use and livelihoods. In this paper, we discuss and illustrate how these two strategies have competed and conflicted in conservation initiatives in the Maya forest (MF) of the Middle Usumacinta River watershed (Guatemala and Mexico). We further argue that both extremes have produced unconvincing results in …

Effects Of Ultraviolet-B Radiation On Leaf Morphology Of Arabidopsis Thaliana (L.) Heynh. (Brassicaceae), Maria Regina Torres Boeger, Mary E. Poulson

Biology Faculty Scholarship

Reduction of the ozone layer results in the increase in ultraviolet radiation reaching the earth's surface, especially the ultraviolet-B (UV-B). The increase of radiation may induce structural and physiological changes in plants, influencing their growth and development. This paper evaluates the effects of ambient UV-B radiation upon to the leaf morphology of Arabidopsis thaliana developed under controlled conditions. The seeds of A. thaliana grown in environmental chamber, with 300 µmol m-2s-1 de photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) with and without 6 kJ m-2 s-1 of radiation UV-Bbe (UV-Bbe; UV-B biologically effective). After 21 …

Using Phosphorus Recovery From Wastewater As A Context For Teaching Sustainable Development With Usepa P3 Support, Daniel B. Oerther, Cinnamon Carlarne, Eric Maurer, Regina Lamendella, Sarah I. Pumphrey Jun 2006

Using Phosphorus Recovery From Wastewater As A Context For Teaching Sustainable Development With Usepa P3 Support, Daniel B. Oerther, Cinnamon Carlarne, Eric Maurer, Regina Lamendella, Sarah I. Pumphrey

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Phosphorus is an essential element required for agriculture. Current practices include "one-way" use of phosphorus: that is mining; production of fertilizer; land application; and ultimately loss to aquatic sediments. Once in the aquatic environment, phosphorus stimulates eutrophication resulting in the "death" of water bodies. With financial support from a People, Prosperity, and Planet program grant of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, an interdisciplinary team of faculty at the University of Cincinnati used phosphorus recovery from sewage and re-utilization as a struvite fertilizer as the context for a year-long course of study integrating graduate and undergraduate students in Environmental Engineering and …
