Nesting Like Birds, Teaching Like Spiders: Emerging Visions In U.S. Higher Education For Biocultural Sustainability And Ecological Literacy Education, Ariana Marta Francesca Kramer Jan 2006

Nesting Like Birds, Teaching Like Spiders: Emerging Visions In U.S. Higher Education For Biocultural Sustainability And Ecological Literacy Education, Ariana Marta Francesca Kramer

Dissertations and Theses

Sustainability education is a growing field still being defined. It draws from environmental education, but includes social justice and economic equity alongside environmental health. International efforts to define the parameters of sustainability education at the university level have called for interdisciplinary approaches that emphasize culture. However, in the United States most programs concerned with sustainability follow in the footsteps of environmental studies with a focus on science and public policy.

Seven interdisciplinary master's programs in sustainability education were reviewed as potential models for how the larger university system might approach teaching for sustainability. Document analysis was used to compare program …

Assimilating Non-Probabilistic Assessments Of The Estimation Of Uncertainty Bias In Expert Judgment Elicitation Using An Evidence Based Approach In High Consequence Conceptual Designs, Colin K. S. Barrows Jan 2006

Assimilating Non-Probabilistic Assessments Of The Estimation Of Uncertainty Bias In Expert Judgment Elicitation Using An Evidence Based Approach In High Consequence Conceptual Designs, Colin K. S. Barrows

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

One of the major challenges in conceptual designs of complex systems is the identification of uncertainty embedded in the information due to lack of historic data. This becomes of increased concern especially in high-risk industries. This document reports a developed methodology that allows for the cognitive bias, estimation of uncertainty, to be elucidated to improve the quality of elicited data. It consists of a comprehensive literature review that begins by defining a 'High Consequence Conceptual Engineering Environment' and identifies the high-risk industries in which these environments are found. It proceeds with a discussion that differentiates risk and uncertainty in decision-making …

Regeneration Of Nature: An Alternative To Ecological Restoration, Tobin Hindle Jan 2006

Regeneration Of Nature: An Alternative To Ecological Restoration, Tobin Hindle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The Regeneration of Nature: an alternative to ecological restoration is an exploration of the human response to alterations society has imposed on natural ecosystems. Ecological restoration is the dominant response to these degraded systems that has emerged within Western, empirical thought. Restoration as it is characteristically practiced in the United States attempts to reverse human impact by returning an ecosystem to an earlier state of existence; its so called pre-disturbance condition. However, I argue that ecological restoration does not adequately address degraded ecosystems dominating today's landscape primarily because it excludes humans as an integrated part of ecosystems and it ignores …

Initial Evaluation Of Organotin Monomers And Polymers As Potential Anticancer Agents, Randy D. Doucette Jan 2006

Initial Evaluation Of Organotin Monomers And Polymers As Potential Anticancer Agents, Randy D. Doucette

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

A large number of metal-containing compounds show significant activity against cancer cells and incorporating a metal into a polymer offers several possible advantages. Compounds of the type R2SnCl2 (R = methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, t-butyl, octyl and phenyl) were tested for the ability to inhibit the growth of Balb 3T3 mouse fibroblast cells and CAOV3 human ovarian carcinoma cells. Polymers of 2-chloro-1,4-benzenediamine and the same organotin dichloride were synthesized and tested as well. For both monomers and polymers, the pattern of growth inhibition relative to the R group was butyl > propyl = t-butyl = octyl = phenyl > ethyl > methyl. This …
