Thirty Years Of Change: How Subdivisions On Stilts Have Altered A Southeast Louisiana Parish's Coast, Landscape And People, Kimberly Solet May 2006

Thirty Years Of Change: How Subdivisions On Stilts Have Altered A Southeast Louisiana Parish's Coast, Landscape And People, Kimberly Solet

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In thirty years, the number of second homes for recreation fishers in coastal Terrebonne Parish has grown from 244 in the late 1970s to an estimated 2,500 in 2005. This thesis considers the ramifications of the tourism boom along the parish's historically isolated and undeveloped coastline. Four coastal communities are examined: (1) Montegut, Pointe-aux-Chenes and Isle de Jean Charles; (2) Cocodrie and Chauvin; (3) Dulac; and (4) Dularge and Theriot. The research question is twofold: Why has coastal tourism been allowed to develop in the fragile wetlands that protect residents from dangerous storms?; and What does tourism development mean for …

Dissertations and Theses

Science education and environmental education are not meeting the needs of marginalized communities such as urban, minority, and poor communities (Seller, 2001; U.S. Environmental Protection Agency [EPA], 1996). There exists an equity gap characterized by the racial and socioeconomic disparities in: levels of participation in scientific and environmental careers and environmental organizations (Lewis & James, 1995; Sheppard, 1995), access to appropriate environmental education programs (U.S. EPA, 1996), exposure to environmental toxins (Bullard, 1993), access to environmental amenities and legal protections (Bullard, 1993), and in grades and standardized test scores in K-12 science (Jencks & Phillips, 1998; Johnston & Viadero, 2000). …

The Yucca Mountain Legacy Project, Healing Ourselves And Mother Earth (Home), Jennifer Viereck, John Hadder, George Rice

Healing Ourselves and Mother Earth (HOME)

HOME envisions the Yucca Mountain Legacy Project as a proactive initiative to develop an environmental/health baseline before contamination from the NTS or the proposed Yucca Mountain Repository reaches surrounding communities. Phase I of the project is a stakeholder driven process to assist current residents immediately downstream. Our study will also be important to future generations who will be downgradient of the Pahute Mesa underground nuclear weapons testing area.

This research was completed money allocated during Round 6 of the Citizens’ Monitoring and Technical Assessment Fund (MTA Fund). Clark University was named conservator of these works.

India's Toxic Landfills: A Dumping Ground For The World's Electronic Waste, Nisha Thakker Apr 2006

India's Toxic Landfills: A Dumping Ground For The World's Electronic Waste, Nisha Thakker

PEEL Alumni Scholarship

From New Delhi in the north, to Calcutta in the south, a repetitive striking image is found in India’s metropolises. One reporter writes of a “hostile zone” in Calcutta where “high brick walls block the views of activities going on with- in.” What hides behind those walls, however, tells a chilling tale of what happens to the discarded electronics of developed countries. These electronic waste (“e-waste”) scrap yards have become common in India. Within these landfills children “as young as eight-years-old tear apart electronic components with bare hands, while vats of acid lying just a few feet away bubble like …

The Color Of Katrina: A Proposal To Allow Disparate Impact Environmental Claims, Rachael Moshman, Josh Hardenbergh

PEEL Alumni Scholarship

Covering this landscape was a brown, filmy sediment left behind by Katrina’s polluted floodwaters, which the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (“EPA”) early tests showed had high levels of E. coli bacteria, oil and gas chemicals, lead, and varying quantities of arsenic. Other tests also found benzo(a)pyrene and petroleum hydrocarbons at levels above the EPA’s safe limit standards.2 Coastal towns became contaminated when the hurricane lifted up bayou sludge, polluted for decades by industrial chemicals, heavy metals, and organic petrochemicals.

The Development Of Environmental Consciousness And Identity In Surfing Subculture, Alex Mass Apr 2006

The Development Of Environmental Consciousness And Identity In Surfing Subculture, Alex Mass

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Since the 1960’s and 1970’s, surfing has exuded the stereotype of a laid-back, environmentally conscious and left-wing culture, a connotation often spread through media outlets such as movies, television, and music that encourage the idea. While the stereotype is often known and widely accepted, no studies could be found that actually tested this view. Using a series of interviews and surveys of the New Ecological Paradigm, this study investigated the formation of environmental consciousness and identity in surfing subculture in order to examine the accuracy of such stereotypes, and analyse the effect that such generalized views have on the formation …

Interests And Expectations Of The Confederated Tribes Of The Umatilla Indian Reservation Regarding Hanford And Hanford-Affected Lands, Confederated Tribes Of Umatilla Indian Reservation

Confederated Tribes of Umatilla Indian Reservation

This document updates the previous document “Scoping Report: Nuclear Risks in Tribal Communities” prepared by Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR) in 1995. At the time, “no comprehensive or sitewide evaluation of risks and costs has been performed at Hanford.” A decade later, this is still true. It is also still true that “a full risk picture must include addressing the impacts over time.”

This report provides a more docused perspective on how to establish both technically and politically defensible environmental management approach in an era of continued fiscal constraints. This was true in 1995 and is even …

A Feminist Perspective On The Precautionary Principle And The Problem Of Endocrine Disruptors Under Neoliberal Globalization Policies, Erica Hesch Anstey Mar 2006

A Feminist Perspective On The Precautionary Principle And The Problem Of Endocrine Disruptors Under Neoliberal Globalization Policies, Erica Hesch Anstey

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Industrialization and "development" during the last 200 years have led to an increase of pesticides, an intensified use of synthetic chemicals, higher levels of environmental pollution, and more exposure to hazardous working conditions. Environmental toxins, many of which are endocrine disruptors, are stored in fat tissue, increasing reproductive health risks for both women and men. Women’s bodies are particularly vulnerable as sites for creating, growing, feeding, and nurturing the next generation. And yet, women’s lives are consistently devalued, especially in a capitalist economy, so that a woman’s rights to her own reproductive health are no longer guaranteed.

In this thesis …
