Historic And Current Discharges From Los Alamos National Laboratory: Analysis And Recommendations, Amigos Bravos, Concerned Citizens For Nuclear Safety

Amigos Bravos

The movement of pollutants in stormwater is an issue of grave concern at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). For the past 63 years, LANL’s nuclear and industrial activities have generated an enormous amount of solid, hazardous, and radioactive waste. Most of the waste has been stored or buried on-site in unlined disposal pits, trenches and shafts. These contaminated areas are referred to as Solid Waste Management Units (SWMUs), Areas of Concern (AOCs), or Potential Release Sites (PRSs).

Amigos Bravos and Concerned Citizens for Nuclear Safety (CCNS) have reviewed the historic and current discharges from LANL and taken steps toward ensuring …

Modern Public Trust Principles: Recognizing Rights And Integrating Standards, Alexandra B. Klass Aug 2006

Modern Public Trust Principles: Recognizing Rights And Integrating Standards, Alexandra B. Klass

ExpressO

The public trust doctrine has a long history from its beginnings as an obligation on states to hold lands submerged under navigable waters in trust for the public, to its resurgence in the 1970s as a protector of natural resources, to its influence on state statutory and constitutional law as the public embraced environmental protection principles. However, many have argued that the public trust doctrine has not lived up to its potential as a major player in environmental and natural resources law. This article proposes a new framework for the public trust doctrine as a state tool for environmental protection …

Sustainable Development Or Just Plain Development? An Analysis Of Sustainability Indicators For Chattanooga, Tennessee, Cheryl Horn Aug 2006

Sustainable Development Or Just Plain Development? An Analysis Of Sustainability Indicators For Chattanooga, Tennessee, Cheryl Horn

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The city of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and the surrounding area has undergone a notable transformation in recent decades. Many of these changes have been used to promote the city as an environmentally friendly place to live, and the phrase sustainable development is frequently used to describe local growth and planning. However, no comprehensive analysis has been undertaken to determine whether Chattanooga is truly headed toward becoming a sustainable community in terms of environmental, social, and economic considerations. Based on the concept of sustainable development, as defined by the United Nations and others, and on sustainability studies conducted in four other cities, …

Review Of The Environmental Justice Reader: Politics, Poetics & Pedagogy, Edited By Mei Mei Evans Admson And Rachel Stein, Katie Ahearn

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

The editors of The Environmental Justice Reader: Politics, Poetics, & Pedagogy (2002) chose to include at least five scholarly essays, comprising one third of the book's content, that directly address the theme of water, thus illuminating the importance of this topic in the realms of environmental and social justice. Contributors to the anthology, ranging from urban activists to literary and anthropological scholars, address a wide variety of national and international environmental disasters from the complex vantage point of the intersection among race, politics, and class, so that the inevitable blurring of the boundaries between traditionally distinct academic disciplines …

Acting On The Commitment The Continuing Case For Diversity In Higher Education And Current Challenges, Nancy Cantor

Chancellor's Collection

I’m delighted to speak with you today and to say how much I admire the work of the National Council for Research on Women for making clear the many ways that the talents of the nation’s majority population---more than 149 million girls and women---are still largely untapped in the nation’s corporate boardrooms, the professions, and in the halls of influence and power.

On Miranda And Misinterpretation: A Look At The Rights Of Native American Defendants, S. Meredith Morris Jun 2006

On Miranda And Misinterpretation: A Look At The Rights Of Native American Defendants, S. Meredith Morris

Student Thesis Honors (1996-2008)

In this paper, I posit that the Miranda ruling from the infamous case Miranda v. Arizona, when poorly applied, results in profound and blatant Eracism. I will begin Part I by stepping back in history to look at the evolution of Miranda and the cases that followed. Next, I take a look at the 2000 Census data and address the relatively current minority population percentages. Then, in Part II, I dissect Miranda, revealing what "custody" and "interrogation", the "right to an attorney" and "valid waiver" mean according to the Supreme Court. In Part III of this paper, I take a …

Workplace, Household, And Personal Predictors Of Pesticide Exposure For Farmworkers, Sara A. Quandt, María A. Hernández-Valero, Joseph G. Grzywacz, Joseph D. Hovey, Melissa Gonzales, Thomas A. Arcury

Psychological Science Faculty Publications

In this article we identify factors potentially associated with pesticide exposure among farmworkers, grade the evidence in the peer-reviewed literature for such associations, and propose a minimum set of measures necessary to understand farmworker risk for pesticide exposure. Data sources we reviewed included Medline, Science Citation Index, Social Science Citation Index, PsycINFO, and AGRICOLA databases. Data extraction was restricted to those articles that reported primary data collection and analysis published in 1990 or later. We read and summarized evidence for pesticide exposure associations. For data synthesis, articles were graded by type of evidence for association of risk factor with pesticide …

The Representation Of The Environment In Children's Literature, Becky Boudreaux May 2006

The Representation Of The Environment In Children's Literature, Becky Boudreaux

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This study is a descriptive research project which examines a purposeful census of the best selling children's books for 0-8 year olds in the United States in 2003. This cross-sectional study of these social artifacts evaluates the extent to which the ideologies of the environmental movement have been inculcated into culture. It evaluates how the environment is represented in children’s literature and the extent to which children's literature meets the goals of environmental education. Through narrative semeiotic analysis of the themes, as well as the manifest (text) and latent (pictures) content, varying degrees of pro and antienvironmental ideologies reflected by …
