An Exploratory Look At The Four Addresses On Accounting In The 10th Edition Of John C. Colt's The Science Of Double Entry Bookkeeping, Richard Vangermeersch

Special Collections (Miscellaneous)

Four public addresses , written by convicted murder John C. Colt from about 1836 to 1841 have not been noted in the accounting history literature. This paper explores the importance of these addresses compiled in the 10th edition of The Science of double entry book keeping and brings them into current literature.

A Fuzzy Logic Controller For Autonomous Wheeled Vehicles, Mohamed Trabia, Linda Z. Shi, Neil Eugene Hodge Dec 2006

A Fuzzy Logic Controller For Autonomous Wheeled Vehicles, Mohamed Trabia, Linda Z. Shi, Neil Eugene Hodge

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

Autonomous vehicles have potential applications in many fields, such as replacing humans in hazardous environments, conducting military missions, and performing routine tasks for industry. Driving ground vehicles is an area where human performance has proven to be reliable. Drivers typically respond quickly to sudden changes in their environment. While other control techniques may be used to control a vehicle, fuzzy logic has certain advantages in this area; one of them is its ability to incorporate human knowledge and experience, via language, into relationships among the given quantities. Fuzzy logic controllers for autonomous vehicles have been successfully applied to address various …

Characterization Of Microbial Populations In The Subsurface, Mark P. Buttner, Patricia Cruz, Klaus J. Stetzenbach, Amy J. Smiecinski

Publications (YM)

This task is part of a cooperative agreement between the UNLV Research Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy (#DE-FC28-04RW12237) titled “Yucca Mountain Groundwater Characterization”. The work was conducted in the Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies, Microbiology Division of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas from October 1, 2004 to September 30, 2006. The overall goal of this research was to investigate the phenomena that affect the fate and transport of radionuclides in the environment. The purpose of this task (ORD-RF-01), “Characterization of Microbial Activity”, was to develop a molecular biological method for the characterization of the microbial population …

Cultural Tendencies In Negotiation: A Comparison Of Finland, India, Mexico, Turkey, And The United States, Lynn E. Metcalf, Allan Bird, Mahesh Shankarmahesh, Zeynep Aycan, Jorma Larimo, Didimo Dewar Valdelamar

In this era of increased global cooperation, a growing number of negotiators conduct business in multiple countries and, therefore, need access to a systematic comparison of negotiating tendencies across a wide range of countries. Empirical work systematically comparing variations across a range of cultures is scarce. A comparative analysis of negotiating tendencies in five countries is presented. This study establishes the utility of the [Salacuse, J. (1998) Ten ways that culture affects negotiating style: Some survey results. Negotiation Journal, 14(3): 221–235] framework in identifying country differences across five countries, representing five cultural clusters. Significant differences in negotiation orientations both …

Conformality And Q-Harmonicity In Carnot Groups, Luca Capogna, Michael Cowling Dec 2006

Conformality And Q-Harmonicity In Carnot Groups, Luca Capogna, Michael Cowling

Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications

We show that if f is a 1-quasiconformal map defined on an open subset of a Carnot group G, then composition with f preserves Q-harmonic functions. We combine this with a regularity theorem for Q-harmonic functions and an algebraic regularity theorem for maps between Carnot groups to show that f is smooth. We give some applications to the study of rigidity.

Homogenization And Field Concentrations In Heterogeneous Media, Robert Lipton Dec 2006

Homogenization And Field Concentrations In Heterogeneous Media, Robert Lipton

Faculty Publications

A multiscale characterization of the field concentrations inside composite and polycrystalline media is developed. We focus on gradient fields associated with the intensive quantities given by the temperature and the electric potential. In the linear regime these quantities are modeled by the solution of a second order elliptic partial differential equation with oscillatory coefficients. The characteristic length scale of the heterogeneity relative to the sample size is denoted by ε and the intensive quantity is denoted by u ε. Field concentrations are measured using the L p norm of the gradient field ||∇u ε||L p(D) for 2 ≤ p < ∞. The analysis focuses on the case when 0 < ε ≪ 1. Explicit lower bounds on lim inf ε→0 are developed. These bounds provide a way to rigorously assess field concentrations generated by the microgeometry without having to compute the actual field u ε. © 2006 Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

Variation Within Dialects: A Case Of Cajun/Creole Influence Within Child Saae And Swe, Janna B. Oetting, April Wimberly Garrity Dec 2006

Variation Within Dialects: A Case Of Cajun/Creole Influence Within Child Saae And Swe, Janna B. Oetting, April Wimberly Garrity

Faculty Publications

Purpose: This study examined whether child speakers of Southern African American English (SAAE) and Southern White English (SWE) who were also perceived by some listeners to present a Cajun/Creole English (CE) influence within their dialects produced elevated rates of 6 phonological and 5 morphological patterns of vernacular relative to other SAAE- and SWE-speaking children. Method: A group comparison design was followed. The data were listener judgments, 1-min audiotaped excerpts of conversational speech, and transcribed language samples from 93 children (31 classified as specifically language impaired while the others were classified as either aged-matched or language-matched controls; 13 classified as SWE …

Alhamdulilah: The Apparently Accidental Establishment Of The Church In Guinea, Kendall Moss Dec 2006

Alhamdulilah: The Apparently Accidental Establishment Of The Church In Guinea, Kendall Moss

BYU Studies

As I neared completion of my first assignment with the U.S. State Department, a two-year tour in Rio de Janeiro, the department’s personnel officers determined that my two years in Rio would be best balanced by an equal amount of time in Conakry, Guinea. Although I had some interest in Africa, I had never given much thought to doing a tour in Guinea. Like a newly called missionary, I quickly began to study about a country I would later come to love.

Charting The Future Of Brigham Young University: Franklin S. Harris And The Changing Landscape Of The Church's Educational Network, 1921-1926, J. Gordon Daines Iii

BYU Studies

Education is deeply embedded in the theology and religion of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Formal educational systems began to develop soon after the establishment of the Church in 1830. The first of these formal systems was the School of the Prophets, established in Kirtland, Ohio, in December 1832 to prepare selected members for missionary work. Nearly a decade later an attempt was made to establish a university in Nauvoo, Illinois. After the move to Utah, the Church continued its involvement in formal education with the establishment of “common schools, stake academies, and colleges and universities.” The …

The Imprisonment Of Martin Harris In 1833, Mark B. Nelson, Steven C. Harper Dec 2006

The Imprisonment Of Martin Harris In 1833, Mark B. Nelson, Steven C. Harper

BYU Studies

With editorial work on Joseph Smith’s legal papers in full swing, the attention of several attorneys, historians, archivists, and law students has turned increasingly to American legal culture in the 1820s through the 1840s and specifically to cases involving Latter-day Saints. At the same time, Mark Nelson recently discovered court documents of a trial involving Martin Harris in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. These brief documents add considerable information to an otherwise little-known chapter in the life and ministry of Martin and Emer Harris. Readers also learn about early Mormon missionary adventures generally.
