What Is The Effect Of Retrieval Practice On Competing Associates In Cued-Recall?, Umit Akirmak Jan 2006

What Is The Effect Of Retrieval Practice On Competing Associates In Cued-Recall?, Umit Akirmak

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There have been many theories on why we forget. One of the recent approaches to this phenomenon is retrieval induced forgetting (RIF). The present study investigated RIF and different kinds of disruptions and their effects by using extra-list cued recall task. Some participants studied two additional word lists after the target list and some participants studied and were tested from these interpolated lists before their final recall of target list. Relatedness of the interfering lists was also manipulated. There were two control groups that either got an immediate test or got a math task before memory test. The particular interest …

Interspecific Interactions Among Common Insects Of The Salt Myrtle, Baccharis Halimifolia L. (Asteraceae), Laura F. Altfeld Jan 2006

Interspecific Interactions Among Common Insects Of The Salt Myrtle, Baccharis Halimifolia L. (Asteraceae), Laura F. Altfeld

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Baccharis halimifolia is host to many species of insect herbivore, including myrmecophilous aphids. Previous studies with B. halimifolia have revealed strong effects of competition by an early-feeding beetle, Trirhabda bacharidis, and nitrogen enrichment. The effects of ant mutualists, however, have not been evaluated for their potential influence on interspecific interactions among insects on the host plant. I have employed a series of experiments aimed at answering the following general questions. (1) How does the density of aphid-tending ants affect common insects on the host plant? (2) What are the relative effects of (a) competition from T. bacharidis, (b) nutrient enrichment, …

Polynomial Quandle Cocycles, Their Knot Invariants And Applications, Kheira Ameur Jan 2006

Polynomial Quandle Cocycles, Their Knot Invariants And Applications, Kheira Ameur

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A quandle is a set with a binary operation that satisfies three axioms that corresponds to the three Reidemeister moves on knot diagrams. Homology and cohomology theories of quandles were introduced in 1999 by Carter, Jelsovsky,Kamada, Langford, and Saito as a modification of the rack (co)homology theory defined by Fenn, Rourke, and Sanderson. Cocycles of the quandle (co)homology, along with quandle colorings of knot diagrams, were used to define a new invariant called the quandle cocycle invariants, defined in a state-sum form. This invariant is constructed using a finite quandle and a cocyle, and it has the advantage that it …

The Relationship Between B-Type Natriuretic Peptide Levels And Hospital Length Of Stay And Quality Of Life In Congestive Heart Failure Patientsthe Relationship Between B-Type Natriuretic Peptide Levels And Hospital Length Of Stay And Quality Of Life In Congestive Heart Failure Patients, Irma B. Ancheta

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Previous research on quality of life (QOL) and its relation to BNP levels in heart failure (HF) has been widely studied. However, the impact of physicians' knowledge of BNP levels at time of clinic visit on QOL and hospital length of stay (LOS) has yet to be fully investigated. The purpose of this study were to determine if physicians' knowledge of BNP levels affected a change in QOL scores at 90 days and reduce hospital length of stay among heart failure patients. QOL data from HF clinic patients (N = 108, 67.5 ± 12.3, 56% male, ejection fraction 26.5 ± …

A Comparison Of Systolic Blood Pressure In Women With And Without Lymphedema Following Surgery For Breast Cancer, Deborah M. Arvidson-Hawkins Jan 2006

A Comparison Of Systolic Blood Pressure In Women With And Without Lymphedema Following Surgery For Breast Cancer, Deborah M. Arvidson-Hawkins

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There is no evidenced-based research on prevention of upper extremity lymphedema following breast cancer treatment. General guidelines have been identified from a basic understanding of the lymphatic system and are considered to be prudent advice for prevention. Cause of lymphedema is hypothesized to be multifactorial and time of onset is widely varied. Exogenous risk factors leading to lymphedema are the removal and destruction of lymph nodes; however, not all women develop lymphedema following axillary lymph node dissection. Co-morbid conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and hypertension are cited as possible endogenous risk factors. Several studies identify hypertension as a significance endogenous …

A Comparative Approach To Teaching Criminal Procedure And Its Application To The Post-Investigative Stage, Stephen C. Thaman Jan 2006

A Comparative Approach To Teaching Criminal Procedure And Its Application To The Post-Investigative Stage, Stephen C. Thaman

All Faculty Scholarship

This article addresses why a comparative perspective should be brought into a basic bar course like criminal procedure. American courts and students should be aware of how other countries process their criminal cases to determine whether we can learn from them. It discusses archetypes of criminal procedure as teaching tools, applications of comparative models in the post-investigative stage of criminal procedure, the right to an oral immediate trial and the right to confront witnesses, and the division of labor between lay and professional judges in deciding facts, guilt, and sentencing. By immersing oneself in comparative law and the history of …

Gender Mainstreaming In International Trade: Catalyst For Economic Development And Political Stability, Constance Z. Wagner Jan 2006

Gender Mainstreaming In International Trade: Catalyst For Economic Development And Political Stability, Constance Z. Wagner

All Faculty Scholarship

This paper examines the role of gender mainstreaming in international trade policy and law upon the tenth anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (“Beijing Declaration”) and the World Trade Organization (“WTO”). The author notes that these two topics have not been successfully integrated but will need to be if globalization is to proceed in a meaningful, positive way. After tracing the historical development of gender mainstreaming at the international level through the Beijing Declaration, the author outlines the manner in which various intergovernmental organizations within the United Nations system have implemented its mandate. However, gender mainstreaming is …

Decentering The Firm: The Limited Liability Company And Low Wage Immigrant Women Workers, Miriam A. Cherry Jan 2006

Decentering The Firm: The Limited Liability Company And Low Wage Immigrant Women Workers, Miriam A. Cherry

All Faculty Scholarship

Congress is now considering radical changes to the immigration system. This article looks at the immigration issue as a labor and employment law question, and proposes a possible solution based on this approach.

I suggest that forming Limited Liability Companies (LLCs) will benefit low-wage immigrant women workers by transforming them into business owners. By using existing legal structures to their benefit, low-wage women workers can curtail at least a portion of the exploitation that they currently experience. Instead of being hired to perform a job, having the intermediary take a cut, and then pay them some amount out of that, …
