Six-To-One Gets The Job Done: Comments On The Reviews, W. Joseph Wyatt, Donna M. Midkiff

Psychology Faculty Research

We are pleased to note that six of the seven responses to our article were marked by approval, and/or thoughtful contemplation, regarding our central theses—that the research said to support biological causation of mental disorders is relatively weak, and that the claims of drug effectiveness are often overstated.

Field-Based Experience In Light Of Changing Demographics, Fred Jay Krieg, Joyce Meikamp, Stephen L. O’Keefe, Sandra S. Stroebel Oct 2006

Field-Based Experience In Light Of Changing Demographics, Fred Jay Krieg, Joyce Meikamp, Stephen L. O’Keefe, Sandra S. Stroebel

School Psychology Faculty Research

Due to changing demographics of students admitted to the School Psychology Training Program at Marshall University Graduate College, it has become imperative to significantly expand field experiences beginning in the first semester to address the lack of educational background of most of the students entering the program. This organized sequence of field experiences continues throughout the program, parallel to classroom instruction, affording opportunities for students to put theory into practice and to interact with professionals in the field, while also allowing for exposure to the public school environment. The collaborative field experience sequence provides the students with early and continuous …

State Courts And The Interpretation Of Federal Statutes, Anthony J. Bellia Jr. Oct 2006

State Courts And The Interpretation Of Federal Statutes, Anthony J. Bellia Jr.

Vanderbilt Law Review

In the debate over how federal courts should interpret federal statutes, "faithful agent" theories stand pitted against "dynamic" theories of statutory interpretation. The following questions lie at the heart of the debate: Is the proper role of federal courts to strive to implement the commands of the legislature-in other words, to act as Congress's faithful agents? Or, is the proper role of federal courts to act as partners with Congress in the forward-looking making of federal law-in other words, to interpret statutes dynamically? Proponents of faithful agent theories include both "textualists" and "purposivists." Textualists have argued that federal courts best …

Book Review: Auto/Biography And Identity: Women, Theatre And Performance, Kim Solga Oct 2006

Book Review: Auto/Biography And Identity: Women, Theatre And Performance, Kim Solga

Department of English Publications

Even as interest in feminist theory and criticism in theatre and performance studies continues to wane (or, perhaps, finds itself remapped and redirected), interest in women, autobiography and performance is on the upswing. Auto/biography and Identity enters the field two years after the publication of Sidonie Smith and Julia Watson's collection Interfaces: Women, Autobiography, Image, Performance, but, in some contrast to this earlier text and its emphasis on the visual, Auto/biography locates itself specifically at the nexus between women's autobiographical writing and performance. As Gale and Gardner note in their introduction, by exploring theatrical women's writing about themselves alongside …

The Beggar's Opera And Its Criminal Law Context, Ian Gallacher

College of Law - Faculty Scholarship

This chapter seeks to take the characters and situations of Gay's The Beggar's Opera and consider how closely the play's portrayal matches the historical record. Although the view offered by the play is a restricted one, the chapter concludes that the picture it offers is as close to historical reality as any other document from the period.
