BACKGROUND. The American Cancer Society, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Cancer Institute, and North American Association of Central Cancer Registries collaborate annually to provide U.S. cancer information, this year featuring the first comprehensive compilation of cancer information for U.S. Latinos.

METHODS. Cancer incidence was obtained from 90% of the Hispanic/Latino and 82% of the U.S. populations. Cancer deaths were obtained for the entire U.S. population. Cancer screening, risk factor, incidence, and mortality data were compiled for Latino and non-Latino adults and children (incidence only). The Heart Of The Matter: The Relationship Between Communities, Cardiovascular Services, And Racial And Ethnic Gaps In Care, Marsha Regenstein, Holly Mead, Anthony Lara Oct 2006

The Heart Of The Matter: The Relationship Between Communities, Cardiovascular Services, And Racial And Ethnic Gaps In Care, Marsha Regenstein, Holly Mead, Anthony Lara

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

Racial and ethnic disparities in cardiovascular care are greatly influenced by market factors and how the health care system is organized. This study examines key health system factors that contribute to disparities in cardiac care among racial and ethnic minorities in the United States. A market assessment, consisting of site visits, interviews, and data collection from key health care providers in 10 communities, was undertaken to identify common characteristics in the health care markets and to explore how these factors may drive disparities in cardiac care.

The Law Of Other States, Eric A. Posner, Cass R. Sunstein Oct 2006

The Law Of Other States, Eric A. Posner, Cass R. Sunstein

Articles

The question of whether courts should consult the laws of "other states" has produced intense controversy. But in some ways, this practice is entirely routine; within the United States, state courts regularly consult the decisions of other state courts in deciding on the common law, the interpretation of statutory law, and even the meaning of state constitutions. A formal argument in defense of such consultation stems from the Condorcet Jury Theorem, which says that under certain conditions, a widespread belief accepted by a number of independent actors, is highly likely to be correct. It follows that if a large majority …

American Wartime Values In Historical Perspective: Full-Employment Mobilization Or Business As Usual, Timothy A. Canova Oct 2006

American Wartime Values In Historical Perspective: Full-Employment Mobilization Or Business As Usual, Timothy A. Canova

Faculty Scholarship

This paper explores the range of values implicated by war and compares today's dominant values with those that prevailed during previous American wars, with a particular emphasis on the World War Two and early Cold War period. War is related to values, and as economists like to remind us, what we value becomes apparent in the movement of people and prices. Part I of this Article considers the moral, ethical and monetary values that prevailed throughout the 1940's and early 1950's. The normative threads that kept the World War Two effort on track were those of mobilization and shared sacrifice. …

Expressions For Bond Stress Of A Tension Splice In Steel Reinforced Concrete, Jkumar Gopalarathnam Oct 2006

Expressions For Bond Stress Of A Tension Splice In Steel Reinforced Concrete, Jkumar Gopalarathnam

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

The aim of the research is to develop expressions for the bond stress at a tension splice in reinforced concrete. Many experiments have been conducted inorder to ascertain the relationship between appropriate variables and develop an expression to evaluate the bond stress. The scope of this research is to use existing experimental data to establish a relation and develop an expression. Before the preprocessing begins, the data are organized into different categories such as bottom, top and side bars, and bars with transverse reinforcement. The existing experimental data is evaluated for statistical validation. It is then subjected to individual and …

Alstroemeria, Aileen Reid Oct 2006

Alstroemeria, Aileen Reid

Bulletins 4000 -

About 60 species of Alstroemeria grow wild in South America, in habitats ranging from the snowline of the Andes and high mountain plateaus down through the highland forests to the coastal deserts.

A member of the lily family, Alstroemeria grows from a rhizome that also develops tuberous storage outgrowths and fleshy roots. The aerial shoots can be either vegetative or reproductive. Normally shoots that have unfolded more than 30 leaves will not flower and remain vegetative.

The leaves of Alstroemeria are unusual in that they rotate through 180 degrees as they unfold, so that the upper surface becomes the lower …

With Friends Like You, Who Needs A Jury? A Response To The Legitimization Of Conceding A Client's Guilt, Sharon G. Scudder Oct 2006

With Friends Like You, Who Needs A Jury? A Response To The Legitimization Of Conceding A Client's Guilt, Sharon G. Scudder

Campbell Law Review

In response to the potential impact of the Nixon decision on the important Sixth Amendment right to effective counsel for the accused, this comment reviews the current legal standard and then advances two proposals. First, Nixon should be narrowly interpreted, because permitting attorneys to concede guilt without client consent is completely inconsistent with the protections afforded guilty pleas and confessions and further weakens the constitutional protection of effective assistance of counsel. Second, the American Bar Association and state bar associations should specifically require express consent prior to a lawyer conceding a client's guilt as a matter of professional ethics within …

Part I briefly reviews the past by considering the pertinent history of the fair use doctrine. It also explains the details of the current suit over Google's Library Project. Part II moves on to consider the current state of fair use analysis by reviewing 110 fair use cases and conducting simple statistical analyses. Rethinking Cultural Institutions In Relation To The City, Monica Rodarmor Oct 2006

Rethinking Cultural Institutions In Relation To The City, Monica Rodarmor

Architecture Thesis Prep

"Rather than trying to distribute culture to the masses, the cultural institution shall be a place where the masses educate one another about culture. Thinking about institutions as 'arenas for cultures of the world' better serves urban life than an institution that is simply a dusty bank of memories. The aim of the institution should be to stimulate cultural dialogue which will better serve the American City. By changing the purpose, the end result is now attainable. Education and inspiration of the masses is achieved through a new urban condition: one that promotes interaction and understanding between cultural spheres."

Rural Iowa And The Transgenic Railroad, Wilson Day Oct 2006

Rural Iowa And The Transgenic Railroad, Wilson Day

Architecture Thesis Prep

"Using an understanding of transgenics and recombinant SNA technology as an analogue for exploring the architectural possibilities within a rail line in Clinton, Iowa, and its directly adjacent modes of transportation, I propose to create an intervention which bridges all modes and establishes a connection between a large portion of Eastern Iowa and the city of Clinton, which will act as an interface for the transfer of architectural goods as well as the transfer of people from various parts of rural Iowa to larger urban areas."

A Sustainable Foundation, Mark K. Wizeman Oct 2006

A Sustainable Foundation, Mark K. Wizeman

Architecture Thesis Prep

"My intentions of this project are to investigate the potential of architecture to augment its efforts of sustainable strategies with aspirations of achieving a socially sustainable foundation in the urban setting. Within the context of Trenton, the understanding of the local communities, the capital and business districts, the education system, and the areas of renewal efforts can reveal solutions to the rebuilding of the city's community by way of reconnecting these now divided forces. What makes architecture critical in this application is its ability to effectively address the very tangible aspects of sustainable practice and the potential for it to …

Social Interaction In The Digitally Networked City., Zachary Goldstein Oct 2006

Social Interaction In The Digitally Networked City., Zachary Goldstein

Architecture Thesis Prep

"There is an underlying digital network that exists in our contemporary cities that affects every aspic of urban life. Technology has changed the way we perceive and activate space, and communicate with one another....

Public space will always be critical in city planning because it fosters human interaction. No matter how advanced our technology becomes, nothing will be able to replace talking to someone in person or participating in live events."
