Three Strategically Placed Hydrogen-Bonding Residues Convert A Proton Pump Into A Sensory Receptor, Yuki Sudo, John L Spudich
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
In haloarchaea, light-driven ion transporters have been modified by evolution to produce sensory receptors that relay light signals to transducer proteins controlling motility behavior. The proton pump bacteriorhodopsin and the phototaxis receptor sensory rhodopsin II (SRII) differ by 74% of their residues, with nearly all conserved residues within the photoreactive retinal-binding pocket in the membrane-embedded center of the proteins. Here, we show that three residues in bacteriorhodopsin replaced by the corresponding residues in SRII enable bacteriorhodopsin to efficiently relay the retinal photoisomerization signal to the SRII integral membrane transducer (HtrII) and induce robust phototaxis responses. A single replacement (Ala-215-Thr), bridging …

Seni Kulinari, Kekuasaan, Dan Multikulturalisme Dalam Master Cooking Boy/ The Real Master Cooking Boy Karya Etsushi Ogawa, Lilawati Kurnia
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
This essay examines manga, the japanese comic Master Cooking Boy" and inquires what the manga offers to the reader beside being a popular reading. This essay reviews the history of manga and its function in the Japanese culture. The paper unravels the theories of cultural studies such as hegemony and multiculturalism in the analyse of this manga. This paper discusses the wider horizon of manga as a field of hegemony discourse and multiculturalism. It opens the possibilities to analyse manga in a different perspective and shows how ideology can operates in the popular literature.

Recall And Recognition Of Brand-Modified Product Placement In Movies, Caitlin Anderson
Recall And Recognition Of Brand-Modified Product Placement In Movies, Caitlin Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
In recent years, the product placement industry has seen a significant boom. The growth of product placement continues as media seeks funding and branded products vie for increased audience attention. Because of the increased product placement, there are many studies that examine the attitudes towards product placement, the experiences and interpretations of brands post-product placement, the effects of product placement, and memory of product placement. However, while product placement is a popular trend, there are occasions when branded products are altered in movies and television (this thesis refers to the altered products as “brand-modified products”). Little, if any, research has …

The Coloniser And The Colonised: Reflections On Translation As Contested Space, Harry Aveling
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Ordering Tendencies In The Binary Alloys Of Rh, Pd, Ir, And Pt: Density Functional Calculations, Gus L. W. Hart, Brian Kolb, Stefan Müller, David B. Botts
Ordering Tendencies In The Binary Alloys Of Rh, Pd, Ir, And Pt: Density Functional Calculations, Gus L. W. Hart, Brian Kolb, Stefan Müller, David B. Botts
Faculty Publications
The binary alloys of Rh, Pd, Ir, and Pt are important because of their high catalytic potential. We report in this paper that the Rh1-xIrx and Rh1-xPtx systems, long thought to phase separate at low temperatures, actually exhibit miscibility over the entire concentration and temperature range. We find low critical ordering temperatures, indicating that long-range order is unlikely to be observed experimentally. These results are compared with previous theoretical predications for the other binary alloys of Rh, Pd, Ir, and Pt and with calculations performed here on the Pt1-xIrx and Pd1-xIrx systems. We discuss these results and investigate the mechanisms …
