Ordering Tendencies In The Binary Alloys Of Rh, Pd, Ir, And Pt: Density Functional Calculations, Gus L. W. Hart, Brian Kolb, Stefan Müller, David B. Botts

Faculty Publications

The binary alloys of Rh, Pd, Ir, and Pt are important because of their high catalytic potential. We report in this paper that the Rh1-xIrx and Rh1-xPtx systems, long thought to phase separate at low temperatures, actually exhibit miscibility over the entire concentration and temperature range. We find low critical ordering temperatures, indicating that long-range order is unlikely to be observed experimentally. These results are compared with previous theoretical predications for the other binary alloys of Rh, Pd, Ir, and Pt and with calculations performed here on the Pt1-xIrx and Pd1-xIrx systems. We discuss these results and investigate the mechanisms …

Hydrodynamics and thermal numerical modeling coupled with sulfur trioxide decomposition for the one channel geometry with three different channel configurations were performed. The results obtained from the numerical modeling were compared with the baseline design under the same boundary and operation conditions. The case with diamond shaped channels has the highest percentage of sulfuric acid decomposition. The baseline channel geometry has the lowest pressure drop compared with other cases.

Lawrence, Rosalind, Bronx African American History Project

Oral Histories

Interviewee: Rosalind Lawrence

Interviewer: Dr. Brian Purnell

Summarized by Alice Stryker

Rosalind was born on November 26, 1956 in the Bronx. She grew up in the Sedgwick Houses. Her mother was born in Connecticut and her father was born in Georgia. Her parents moved from Prospect Avenue to the Sedgwick houses and saw it as moving up. The Sedgwick houses were originally for Veterans, and because her father was in the Korean War, they were able to move into the Sedgwick housing projects. They had a roomy 2 bed room apartment. Most of African Americans living in her building were …

Baseball's New Cba, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

As the World Series came to an end on Friday with Tony LaRussa receiving his latest anointing from the fans of Cardinal Nation (prepare yourselves for another book), others were left to wonder at the fantastic turnaround by the Tigers, who went from juggernaut to gift-givers in less than a week. The baseball story that was of greater significance was the announcement that a new contract agreement had been reached between the Players Association and the baseball owners. Collective bargaining, it seems, has worked once again, establishing a two time winning streak for the players, the owners, and the fans.

Inje University, a nonprofit-oriented educational institution, was ranked second in the nation and first in all the local universities in the 2001 Comprehensive Evaluation of the Universities in 25 years since it was founded. In order to find out the reason for this high reputation, we had an interview with the chairman and an in-depth interview with other school authorities, interviewed the students and the residents in the community, and collected related data for the second time. We revealed that Inje University had been performing public marketing in the areas of its management philosophy, function, form, and performance. Our interview …

Can Learning Organizations Survive In The Newer Nhs?, Rod Sheaff, David Pilgrim Oct 2006

Can Learning Organizations Survive In The Newer Nhs?, Rod Sheaff, David Pilgrim

Peninsula Medical School

Background: This paper outlines the principal characteristics of a learning organisation and the organisational features that define it. It then compares these features with the organisational conditions that currently obtain, or are being created, within the British NHS. The contradictory development of recent British health policy, resulting in the NHS becoming both more marketised and more bureaucratised has correspondingly ambiguous implications for attempts to implement a 'learning organisation' model. Methods: Texts that define and debate the characteristics of a learning organisation were found by snowballing references from the founding learning organisation books and published papers, and then by searching a …

Going Home? Schooling In Mexico Of Transnational Children, Víctor Zúñiga, Edmund T. Hamann Oct 2006

Going Home? Schooling In Mexico Of Transnational Children, Víctor Zúñiga, Edmund T. Hamann

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

The literature in international migration from Mexico to the U.S. has usually examined labor, juridical, political, and public health dimensions of the phenomena. However, the educational aspect of international migration is becoming a major concern for both countries. This article offers preliminary results from a survey of transnational students coming back from the U.S. to Mexican schools. The database includes information from a representative sample of public and private schools of Nuevo León (1st to 9th grade). It includes estimates of the number of transnational students, their school trajectories, and perspectives on their educational experience in both countries.

Scalable Load And Store Processing In Latency Tolerant Processors, Amit Vasant Gandhi Oct 2006

Scalable Load And Store Processing In Latency Tolerant Processors, Amit Vasant Gandhi

Dissertations and Theses

Memory latency-tolerant architectures support thousands of in-flight instructions without proportionate scaling of cycle-critical processor resources, and thousands of useful instructions can complete in parallel with a long-latency miss to memory. These architectures, however, require large queues to track all loads and stores executed while a long-latency miss is pending. Hierarchical designs alleviate cycle-time impact of these structures but the Content-Addressable-Memory (CAM) and search functions required to enforce memory ordering and provide data-forwarding place high demand on area and power.

Many recent proposals address the complexity of load and store queues. However, none of these proposals addresses the fundamental source of …
