Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents the development of a computational model that can be used to study the interactions between structures and detonating explosives contained within them. This model was developed as part of an effort to develop a rubble characterization model for use in AmmoSIM, an agent based urban tactical decision aid (UTDA) software for weapon-target pairing. The rubble pile created following the collapse of a building in a combat situation can significantly impact mission accomplishment, particularly in the area of movement and maneuver. The information provided by AmmoSIM will enable both platoon level and command center staff to make informed …

K Α₁ Radiation From Heavy, Heliumlike Ions Produced In Relativistic Collisions, Andrey S. Surzhykov, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Th H. Stohlker, Stephan Fritzsche

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Bound-state transitions in few-electron, heavy ions following radiative electron capture are studied within the framework of the density matrix theory and the multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock approach. Special attention is paid to the K α1 (1 s1/2 2 p3/2 1.3PJ=1,2→1s21/2 1SJ=0) radiative decay of heliumlike uranium U90+ projectiles. This decay has recently been observed at the GSI facility in Darmstadt, giving rise to a surprisingly isotropic angular distribution, which is inconsistent with previous experiments and calculations based on a "one-particle" model. We show that the unexpected isotropy essentially results from …

Microstructural Modification Of As-Cast Al-Si-Mg Alloy By Friction Stir Processing, Z. Y. Ma, S. R. Sharma, Rajiv S. Mishra

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Friction stir processing (FSP) has been applied to cast aluminum alloy A356 plates to enhance the mechanical properties through microstructural refinement and homogenization. the effect of tool geometry and FSP parameters on resultant microstructure and mechanical properties was investigated. the FSP broke up and dispersed the coarse acicular Si particles creating a uniform distribution of Si particles in the aluminum matrix with significant microstructural refinement. Further, FSP healed the casting porosity. These microstructural changes led to a significant improvement in both strength and ductility. Higher tool rotation rate was the most effective parameter to refine coarse Si particles, heal the …

A Rhetoric For Ratification: The Argument Of The Federalist And Its Impact On Constitutional Interpretation, Dan T. Coenen Nov 2006

A Rhetoric For Ratification: The Argument Of The Federalist And Its Impact On Constitutional Interpretation, Dan T. Coenen

Duke Law Journal

Courts, lawyers, and scholars have long assumed that The Federalist Papers supply important information for use in constitutional argument and interpretation. In recent years, commentators have questioned this view. Their skepticism grows out of two major concerns. First, Justice Scalia's challenge to the use of legislative history in the statutory context casts a cloud over judicial use of background texts such as The Federalist in seeking the meaning of the Constitution. Second, even if courts may rely on some background materials in interpreting the Constitution, there is reason to conclude that The Federalist. does not qualify as the sort of …

Saudi Medical Journal

Fournier9s gangrene is an aggressive form of necrotizing fasciitis of the perineal, perianal or genital regions, usually caused by a polymicrobial infection that includes virulent organisms. Over the last decades, we have treated 9 patients suffering from Fournier9s gangrene using systemic chemotherapy with broad-spectrum antibiotics, and with extensive, sometimes serial surgical debridement. Recently in one case, in addition to treatment, we used locally 100% oxygen in daily doses with promising results in healing wound. Herein, we report this case with a brief review of the literature concerning pathogenesis, risk factors, and treatment approaches.

Justice For The Vulnerable? Debating The Relationship Between Aboriginal People And Australian Criminal Justice, Mark Findlay Nov 2006

Justice For The Vulnerable? Debating The Relationship Between Aboriginal People And Australian Criminal Justice, Mark Findlay

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

As much as it might be said that a nation is judged by the way it treats its most disadvantaged citizens, the reality of criminal justice is dependent on its relations with the vulnerable. On any measure Australian criminal justice is indicted by the overrepresentation of Aboriginal people in its domain.

Procedural Issues In The Anti-Dumping Regulations Of China: A Critical Review Under The Wto Rules, Won-Mog Choi, Henry S. Gao Nov 2006

Procedural Issues In The Anti-Dumping Regulations Of China: A Critical Review Under The Wto Rules, Won-Mog Choi, Henry S. Gao

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Since the World Trade Organization (WTO) was established, China his made large-scale efforts to shape its trade remedy system through legal and organizational changes. Through these changes, China could clarify the meanings of WTO anti-dumping provisions including the provision relating to the definition of domestic industry. Moreover, procedural disciplines on reviews were fortified in Chinese anti-dumping system. While the overall improvements to the trade remedy system of China are evident, definitions of several key legal terms, including the concept of related producers, the negligible import standard, and adjustment factors for a fair comparison between normal values and export prices are …

New Paradigm Of Inference Control With Trusted Computing, Yanjiang Yang, Yingjiu Li, Robert H. Deng Nov 2006

New Paradigm Of Inference Control With Trusted Computing, Yanjiang Yang, Yingjiu Li, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The database server is a crucial bottleneck in traditional inference control architecture, as it enforces highly computation-intensive auditing for all users who query the protected database. As a result, most auditing methods, though rigorously studied, can never be implemented in practice for protecting largescale real-world database systems. To shift this paradigm, we propose a new inference control architecture that will entrust inference control to each users platform, provided that the platform is equipped with trusted computing technology. The trusted computing technology is designed to attest the state of a users platform to the database server, so as to assure the …

Low-Latency Broadcast In Multirate Wireless Mesh Networks, Chun Tung Chou, Archan Misra, Junaid Qadir Nov 2006

Low-Latency Broadcast In Multirate Wireless Mesh Networks, Chun Tung Chou, Archan Misra, Junaid Qadir

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In a multirate wireless network, a node can dynamically adjust its link transmission rate by switching between different modulation schemes. In the current IEEE802.11a/b/g standards, this rate adjustment is defined for unicast traffic only. In this paper, we consider a wireless mesh network (WMN), where a node can dynamically adjust its link-layer multicast rates to its neighbors, and address the problem of realizing low-latency network-wide broadcast in such a mesh. We first show that the multirate broadcast problem is significantly different from the single-rate case. We will then present an algorithm for achieving low-latency broadcast in a multirate mesh which …

A Model For Anticipatory Event Detection, Qi He, Kuiyu Chang, Ee Peng Lim Nov 2006

A Model For Anticipatory Event Detection, Qi He, Kuiyu Chang, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Event detection is a very important area of research that discovers new events reported in a stream of text documents. Previous research in event detection has largely focused on finding the first story and tracking the events of a specific topic. A topic is simply a set of related events defined by user supplied keywords with no associated semantics and little domain knowledge. We therefore introduce the Anticipatory Event Detection (AED) problem: given some user preferred event transition in a topic, detect the occurence of the transition for the stream of news covering the topic. We confine the events to …

Detection And Identification Of Vehicles Based On Their Unintended Electromagnetic Emissions, Xiaopeng Dong, Haixiao Weng, Daryl G. Beetner, Todd H. Hubing, Donald C. Wunsch, Michael Noll, Huseyin Goksu, Benjamin Moss Nov 2006

Detection And Identification Of Vehicles Based On Their Unintended Electromagnetic Emissions, Xiaopeng Dong, Haixiao Weng, Daryl G. Beetner, Todd H. Hubing, Donald C. Wunsch, Michael Noll, Huseyin Goksu, Benjamin Moss

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

When running, vehicles with internal combustion engines radiate electromagnetic emissions that are characteristic of the vehicle. Emissions depend on the electronics, harness wiring, body type, and many other features. Since emissions are unique to each vehicle, these may be used for identification purposes. This paper investigates a procedure for detecting and identifying vehicles based on their RF emissions. Parameters like the average magnitude or standard deviation of magnitude within a frequency band were extracted from measured emission data. These parameters were used as inputs to an artificial neural network (ANN) that was trained to identify the vehicle that produced the …

Unjust Enrichment And Wrongly Paid Tax, Hang Wu Tang Nov 2006

Unjust Enrichment And Wrongly Paid Tax, Hang Wu Tang

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Boake Allen Limited v. Revenue and Customs Commissioners [2006] EWCA Civ 25 concerned early payment of Advance Corporation Tax ("ACT"). ACT was normally payable when a company paid dividends to its shareholders, but there was a statutory exception where the company was a subsidiary of a United Kingdom company and both the parent and subsidiary made a group income election. If the tax authorities accepted the election, the obligation to pay ACT would only accrue when the parent company paid dividends. Section 247 of the Income and Corporation Taxes Act 1988 ("ICTA") stipulated that group income elections were only available …

Natural Obligations And The Common Law Of Unjust Enrichment, Hang Wu Tang Nov 2006

Natural Obligations And The Common Law Of Unjust Enrichment, Hang Wu Tang

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Two leading restitution scholars have recently argued that the notion of natural obligations is now an important defence in the law of unjust enrichment. 'In particular, the late Professor Peter Birks asserts, in his last book, that 'the claimant cannot say that the money was not due if, behind the technicalities of the law, there was still a moral obligation to pay.' This development is interesting because the concept of natural obligations is traditionally thought to be a civilian and not a common law concept. Birks' assertion represents an attempt to use the study of comparative law to interpret the …

Dynamic Programming-Based Energy-Efficient Rate Adaptation For Wireless Ad Hoc Networks, Maciej Jan Zawodniok, Jagannathan Sarangapani Nov 2006

Dynamic Programming-Based Energy-Efficient Rate Adaptation For Wireless Ad Hoc Networks, Maciej Jan Zawodniok, Jagannathan Sarangapani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Resource constraints require that ad hoc wireless networks are energy efficient during transmission and rate adaptation. In this paper we propose a novel cross-layer energy-efficient rate adaptation scheme that employs dynamic programming (DP) principle to analytically select the modulation scheme online. The scheme uses channel state information from the physical layer and congestion information from the scheduling layer to select a modulation rate. This online selection maximizes throughput while saving energy and preventing congestion. The simulation results indicate that an increase in throughput by 96% and energy-efficiency by 131% is observed when compared to the Receiver Based AutoRate (RBAR) protocol.

Weak-Group Unitary Space-Time Codes, Adam Panagos, Kurt Louis Kosbar, Asif Iqbal Mohammad

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We propose a construction technique for unitary space-time codes that use Givens rotation matrices. These constellations have a desirable weak group property that leads to reduced construction and decoding complexity. The newly constructed constellations have the best known diversity product and diversity sum for a wide range of constellation sizes and number of transmit antennas.

On One-Dimensional Self-Assembly Of Surfactant-Coated Nanoparticles, Jee-Ching Wang, Partho Neogi, Daniel Forciniti Nov 2006

On One-Dimensional Self-Assembly Of Surfactant-Coated Nanoparticles, Jee-Ching Wang, Partho Neogi, Daniel Forciniti

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Nanometer-sized metal and semiconductor particles possess novel properties. To fully realize their potential, these nanoparticles need to be fabricated into ordered arrays or predesigned structures. A promising nanoparticle fabrication method is coupled surface passivation and self-assembly of surfactant-coated nanoparticles. Due to the empirical procedure and partially satisfactory results, this method still represents a major challenge to date and its refinement can benefit from fundamental understanding. Existing evidences suggest that the self-assembly of surfactant-coated nanoparticles is induced by surfactant-modified interparticle interactions and follows an intrinsic road map such that short one-dimensional (1D) chain arrays of nanoparticles occur first as a stable …

Synchronous Reference Frame Based Active Filter Current Reference Generation Using Neural Networks, Joy Mazumdar, Ronald G. Harley, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy Nov 2006

Synchronous Reference Frame Based Active Filter Current Reference Generation Using Neural Networks, Joy Mazumdar, Ronald G. Harley, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The increased use of nonlinear devices in industry has resulted in direct increase of harmonic distortion in the industrial power system in recent years. The significant harmonics are almost always 5th, 7th, 11th and the 13th with the 5th harmonic being the largest in most instances. Active filter systems have been proposed to mitigate harmonic currents of the industrial loads. The most important requirement for any active filter is the precise detection of the individual harmonic component's amplitude and phase. Fourier transform based techniques provide an excellent method for individual harmonic isolation, but it requires a minimum of two cycles …

Cancellation Predictive Control For Three-Phase Pwm Rectifiers Under Harmonic And Unbalanced Input Conditions, Peng Xiao, Keith Corzine, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy Nov 2006

Cancellation Predictive Control For Three-Phase Pwm Rectifiers Under Harmonic And Unbalanced Input Conditions, Peng Xiao, Keith Corzine, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents an intuitive and simple-to-implement control scheme to improve the performance of three-phase boost-type PWM rectifiers under harmonic and unbalanced input conditions. Unlike most other control strategies, the proposed method does not need to extract either the harmonic or the negative-sequence components in the supply voltages and currents. A near-synchronous reference frame is used to determine the positive-sequence fundamental-frequency component in the input voltages. Utilizing only the extracted component, the DC-link voltage control and power factor control are implemented independently to determine the phase angle and magnitude of the PWM reference voltage. The commanded rectifier voltage adjustments are …

A Novel Seven-Level Shunt Active Filter For High-Power Drive Systems, Xiao Peng, Keith Corzine, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy Nov 2006

A Novel Seven-Level Shunt Active Filter For High-Power Drive Systems, Xiao Peng, Keith Corzine, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In high-power adjustable speed motor drives, such as those used in electric ship propulsion systems, active filters provide a viable solution to mitigating harmonic related issues caused by diode or thyristor rectifier front-ends. To handle the large compensation currents and provide better thermal management, two or more paralleled semiconductor switching devices are often used. In this paper, a novel topology is proposed where two active filter inverters are connected with tapped reactors to share the compensation currents. The proposed active filter topology can also produce seven voltage levels, which significantly reduces the switching current ripple and the size of ripple …

The Ninth Amendment: It Means What It Says, Randy E. Barnett Nov 2006

The Ninth Amendment: It Means What It Says, Randy E. Barnett

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Although the Ninth Amendment appears on its face to protect unenumerated individual rights of the same sort as those that were enumerated in the Bill of Rights, courts and scholars have long deprived it of any relevance to constitutional adjudication. With the growing interest in originalist methods of interpretation since the 1980s, however, this situation has changed. In the past twenty years, five originalist models of the Ninth Amendment have been propounded by scholars: The state law rights model, the residual rights model, the individual natural rights model, the collective rights model, and the federalism model. This article examines thirteen …
