Strategies For Bridging The Gender Gap In Technology Use : From Education To The Workplace, Martha Frazier
Strategies For Bridging The Gender Gap In Technology Use : From Education To The Workplace, Martha Frazier
Graduate Research Papers
This literature review is about strategies for bridging the gender gap in technology use in the classroom and the workplace. The research done on the subject indicates that a gender gap does exist in the classroom and the workplace. Women and girls have not been encouraged to participate in classes or training that will prepare them to make the transition from the classroom to the workplace. The conclusion of this review suggests several methods to aid instructors and employers in bringing about equity in the classroom and the workforce. The implementation of diversity training, mentoring, and role modeling are just …

Also, conclusions were drawn from the case study and reviewed literature, and recommendations were made for the use of interactive writing in the classroom and for future research in this area.
Gender Differences In American Children's Oral Narratives, Nadezda M. Zernova
Gender Differences In American Children's Oral Narratives, Nadezda M. Zernova
Graduate Research Papers
Gender differences exist among different aspects of children's development (such as social, cognitive, and emotional). Children's narratives have been used as a common assessment tool (Libby & Aries, 1989; Wang & Leichtman, 2000) to learn more about gender differences. Knowledge of existing differences enables educators to individualize their teaching for boys and girls in order to benefit their development. The present study focused on gender differences in the following areas of American children's oral narratives: characters, emotional tone, structure, content, and language. The participants of the study were 14 kindergarteners and first-graders (7 boys and 7 girls) between ages 6 …

Using American Library Association's Current Notable Literature For Younger And Middle Readers To Help Enhance The 6 + 1 Trait Writing™ Model In The Elementary Classroom, Debra Zwank
Graduate Research Papers
This study recognized that teachers perform under an incredible amount of stress daily. They feel overcome at the end of each day by stress and high expectations placed upon them for their students to achieve (Black, 2003, p. 37). In addition, the study showed that reading aloud was an important component in helping students become excited about reading and writing. Furthermore, research shows teachers need to help students make connections between what the teacher shares as a read-aloud and what is being taught in the classroom. Therefore, the media specialist is there to help teachers make the connection between award-winning …
Attributing Success And Failure : Attribution Theory At Work, Ellen M. Shay
Attributing Success And Failure : Attribution Theory At Work, Ellen M. Shay
Graduate Research Papers
Attribution Theory demonstrates how people can appropriately attribute success and failure. Teachers must learn how to help students handle their successes and, perhaps more importantly, their failures. If teachers are not successful in this endeavor, the students will not succeed in a traditional school setting.

A Design-Based Research Strategy To Promote Scalability For Educational Innovations, Jody Clarke-Midura, C. Dede, D. J. Ketelhut, B. Nelson, C. Bowman
Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications
This article offers insights into how the design of innovations can enhance their “scalability”: the ability to adapt an innovation to effective usage in a wide variety of contexts, including settings where major conditions for success are absent or attenuated. We are implementing the River City MUVE curriculum, a technology-based innovation designed to enhance engagement and learning in middle school science, in a range of educational contexts. Based on our studies of these scaling up activities, we offer examples of design strategies for scalability and describe our plan to develop a “scalability index.”
The Metamorphosis Of Aboriginal Title, Brian Slattery
The Metamorphosis Of Aboriginal Title, Brian Slattery
Articles & Book Chapters
Aboriginal title has undergone a significant transformation from the colonial era to the present day. In colonial times, aboriginal title was governed by Principles of Recognition based on ancient relations between the Crown and Indigenous American peoples. With the passage of time, this historical right has evolved into a generative right, governed by Principles of Reconciliation. As a generative right, aboriginal title exists in a dynamic but latent form, which is capable of partial articulation by the courts but whose full implementation requires agreement between the Indigenous party and the Crown. The courts have the power to recognize the core …
Poverty, Agency And Resistance In The Future Of International Law: An African Perspective, Obiora Chinedu Okafor
Poverty, Agency And Resistance In The Future Of International Law: An African Perspective, Obiora Chinedu Okafor
Articles & Book Chapters
This article enquires into the likely posture of future international law with respect to African peoples. It does so by focusing on three of the most important issues that have defined, and are likely to continue to define, international law’s engagement with Africans. These are: the grinding poverty in which most Africans live, the question of agency in their historical search for dignity, and the extent to which these African peoples can effectively resist externally imposed frameworks and measures that have negative effects on their social, economic and political experience. International law’s future posture in these respects is considered through …

Pure Extensions Of Locally Compact Abelian Groups, Peter Loth
Pure Extensions Of Locally Compact Abelian Groups, Peter Loth
Mathematics Faculty Publications
In this paper, we study the group Pext(C,A) for locally compact abelian (LCA) groups A and C. Sufficient conditions are established for Pext(C,A) to coincide with the first Ulm subgroup of Ext(C,A). Some structural information on pure injectives in the category of LCA groups is obtained. Letting K denote the class of LCA groups which can be written as the topological direct sum of a compactly generated group and a discrete group, we determine the groups G in K which are pure injective in the category of LCA groups. Finally we describe those groups G in K such that every …
Review Of: The Politics Of Human Frailty: A Theological Defence Of Political Liberalism, By Christopher J. Insole, Brian Stiltner
Review Of: The Politics Of Human Frailty: A Theological Defence Of Political Liberalism, By Christopher J. Insole, Brian Stiltner
Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
Against the grain of much contemporary Christian theology, Christopher Insole’s The Politics of Human Frailty takes on the challenge of theologically defending political liberalism. Specifically, he defends a strand of political liberalism ‘informed by the theological conviction that the human person is a creature incapable of its own perfection, although nonetheless called to and made for this perfection’ (p. vii). Insole, University Lecturer in Philosophy of Religion at the University of Cambridge, attends to philosophers and theologians primarily in the British tradition, but also on the American side. Insole advances his argument mostly through readings of other authors. Positively, Insole …
A Spatial Analysis Of Obesity In West Virginia, Anura Amarasinghe, Gerard D'Souza, Cheryl Brown, Tatiana Borisova
A Spatial Analysis Of Obesity In West Virginia, Anura Amarasinghe, Gerard D'Souza, Cheryl Brown, Tatiana Borisova
Regional Research Institute Working Papers
A spatial panel data analysis at the county level examines how individual food consumption, recreational, and lifestyle choices ― against a backdrop of changing demographic, built environment, and policy factors ― leads to obesity. Results suggest that obesity tends to be spatially autocorrelated; in addition to hereditary factors and lifestyle choices, it is also caused by sprawl and lack of land use planning. Policy measures which stimulate educational attainment, poverty alleviation, and promotion of better land use planning and best consumption practices (BCPs) could both reduce obesity and result in sustainable development of regions where obesity is prevalent and the …

Assessing The Productivity Of Tense Marking In Young Children : Language Sample Analysis Versus Parent Report, Emily Frauenfeld-Block
Assessing The Productivity Of Tense Marking In Young Children : Language Sample Analysis Versus Parent Report, Emily Frauenfeld-Block
Honors Capstones
The purpose of this capstone is to determine if certain items from the CDI: WS could be used to assess the productivity of tense marking in young children at risk for specific language impairment at 36 months. Recently, Hadley and Short (2005) devised cumulative measures of capturing the onset of tense marking during the earliest period of grammatical development. Their investigation was driven by the need to determine if the late emergence and limited productivity of tense morphemes could be used to detect children at risk for SLI at younger ages. However, their methods, which rely upon comprehensive, longitudinal language …

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
Amphibolite-facies para- and orthogneisses near Dulan, in the southeast part of the North Qaidam terrane, enclose minor ultra-high pressure (UHP) eclogite and peridotite. Field relations and coesite inclusions in zircons from paragneiss suggest that felsic, mafic, and ultramafic rocks all experienced UHP metamorphism and a common amphibolite-facies retrogression. Ion microprobe U–Pb and REE analyses of zircons from two granitic orthogneisses indicate magmatic crystallization at 927 ± Ma and 921 ± 7 Ma. Zircon rims in one of these samples yield younger ages (397–618 Ma) compatible with partial zircon recrystallization during in-situ Ordovician-Silurian eclogite-facies metamorphism previously determined from eclogite and paragneiss …
