“Ea Spouse” And The Crisis Of Video Game Labour: Enjoyment, Exclusion, Exploitation, Exodus, Nick Dyer-Witheford, Greig De Peuter

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

The blog postings of “EA Spouse,” partner of an exhausted video game programmer, have catalyzed discussion of epidemic overwork in the digital play inudstry. This paper analyzes the crisis of labour in this glamorous new medium. After a brief overview of the industry and its production process, we discuss its labour conditions under four headings. “Enjoyment” examines the real pleasures game workers find at their jobs. “Exclusion” discusses the gendering of game work. “Exploitation” investigates the corporate processes that drive toward a work culture of extreme hours and the consequences game workers suffer. “Exodus” looks at current attempts by workers …

Publicidad, Violencia E Infancia: Consideraciones En Torno A Una Pragmática Funcional Del Discurso Publicitario En Televisión, Juan Miguel Aguado, Inmaculada J. Martínez

Desesperadamente Buscando A La Audiencia Cinematográfica Brasileña, O Cómo Y Por Qué Los Estudios Brasileños De Cine Siguen Siendo Textualistas, Fernando Mascarello

U.S. And Romanian Executive Mba Students: A Cross-Cultural Comparison, Ernest A. Capozzoli, David E. Gundersen, Marcel Duhaneanu Jan 2006

U.S. And Romanian Executive Mba Students: A Cross-Cultural Comparison, Ernest A. Capozzoli, David E. Gundersen, Marcel Duhaneanu

Faculty Publications

Currently, there are over 260 EMBA programs worldwide with approximately 180 programs resident in the United States. The number of programs available for EMBA students has increased competition for those students. One characteristic of this increased competition between EMBA programs is the addition of global initiatives to expose students to other cultures. Part of this global initiative has resulted in alliances and the establishment of working relationships between educational institutions. To facilitate and enhance the learning experience while in an EMBA program these alliances should consider the impact culture plays in shaping student expectations. This paper addresses the question of …

Carbon Flows Through A Benthic Food Web: Integrating Biomass, Isotope And Tracer Data, Dick Van Oevelen, Karline Soetaert, Jack J. Middelburg, Peter M. J. Herman, Leon Moodley, Ilse Hamels, Tom Moens, Carlo H. R. Heip

Journal of Marine Research

The herbivorous, detrital and microbial pathways are major components of marine food webs. Although it is commonly recognized that these pathways can be linked in several ways, elucidating carbon transfers between or within these pathways remains a challenge. Intertidal flat communities are driven by a wide spectrum of organic matter sources that support these different pathways within the food web. Here we reconstruct carbon pathways using inverse analysis based on mass balancing, stable isotope signatures and tracer data. Data were available on biomass, total carbon production and processing, integrated diet information from stable isotope signatures and the transfer of recently …

Critiques Of The "Novela Rosa": Martín Gaite, Almodóvar, And Etxebarría, Debra J. Ochoa Jan 2006

Critiques Of The "Novela Rosa": Martín Gaite, Almodóvar, And Etxebarría, Debra J. Ochoa

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

At the end of the twentieth century, film director Pedro Almodovar (b. 1949), in La flor de mi secreto (1995), and writer Lucia Etxebarria (b. 1966), in Beatriz y los cuerpos celestes, una novela rosa (1998), continue to analyze the novela rosa, a project begun by Carmen Martin Gaite in El cuarto de atrds (1978) and Usos amorosos de la postguerra (1987). Martin Gaite argues that women of her generation were victims of the Francoist ideology found in popular romance novels. Like many others, including Franco's own daughter Carmen, she received a limited education that did not allow women …

A Comparison Of The Effect Of Single-Sex Versus Mixed-Sex Classes On Middle School Student Achievement, Carol E. Thom Jan 2006

A Comparison Of The Effect Of Single-Sex Versus Mixed-Sex Classes On Middle School Student Achievement, Carol E. Thom

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of single-sex versus mixedsex classes on middle school student achievement. It was a case study of Stonewall Jackson Middle School in Charleston, West Virginia, an inner-city school with approximately 600 students, of which 30% were minority (mostly black), 30% were special needs, and 70% were classified low socio-economic status (SES). Student WESTEST (West Virginia Educational Standards Test) scores in reading/language arts and math were collected and compared from the school years 2003-2004 and 2004-2005. Each student’s scores from the first year were compared to that same student’s scores from the …

The Many Manipulations Of Morty Mouse: Children's Stories And The Parental Encouragement Of Altruism, Craig T. Palmer, Jennice Wright, Scott A. Wright, Chris Cassidy, Todd L. Vanpool, Kathryn Coe Jan 2006

The Many Manipulations Of Morty Mouse: Children's Stories And The Parental Encouragement Of Altruism, Craig T. Palmer, Jennice Wright, Scott A. Wright, Chris Cassidy, Todd L. Vanpool, Kathryn Coe

College of Education

Most analyses of children's stories share the assumption that stories are told to children to influence their behavior. This paper explores how the analysis of stories can provide insight into social strategies used by people interacting within their cultural context. To demonstrate the potential of this approach, we created multiple versions of an original children's story to explore attitudes of college students toward the form of social interaction known as reciprocal altruism. Some versions portrayed the protagonist of the story as following a tit-for-tat strategy, while in other versions the protagonist was altruistic toward all the other characters regardless of …

A King Who Devours His People: Jiang Zemin And The Falun Gong Crackdown: A Bibliography, Michael J. Greenlee Jan 2006

A King Who Devours His People: Jiang Zemin And The Falun Gong Crackdown: A Bibliography, Michael J. Greenlee

International Journal of Legal Information

In July 1999, the government of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) began an official crackdown against the qigong cultivation group known as Falun Gong. Intended to quickly contain and eliminate what the PRC considers an evil or heretical cult (xiejiao), the suppression has instead created the longest sustained and, since the Tiananmen Square protests of June 1989, most widely known human rights protest conducted in the PRC. The Falun Gong has received worldwide recognition and support while the crackdown continues to provoke harsh criticism against the PRC as new allegations of human rights …

Memory, Mythmaking, And Museums: Constructive Authenticity And The Primitive Blues Subject, Stephen A. King Jan 2006

Memory, Mythmaking, And Museums: Constructive Authenticity And The Primitive Blues Subject, Stephen A. King

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

This essay explores how museums, public memory, and authenticity intersect to privilege an understanding of the past. Reflecting White control over the promotion of blues music, the curators at the Delta Blues Museum, located in Clarksdale, Mississippi, employ two rhetorical strategies to satisfy the expectations of (White) tourists who share culturally specific memories of the blues. First, the museum's rhetorical depiction of blues artists reflects White fascination with the mythic image of the primitive blues subject. Second, the exhibit recreates an early 20th century Delta society to complement tourism goals to market the Mississippi Delta as America's last remaining “pure” …

Onanistic Feminism -- A Feminist Perspective : A Case Study Of Indonesian Feminist Media, Meike Bhariana Jan 2006

Onanistic Feminism -- A Feminist Perspective : A Case Study Of Indonesian Feminist Media, Meike Bhariana

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Feminist media production constitutes a key vehicle for envisioning and politicizing women's life experiences and their cultural meaning in the contemporary world. This research pursued questions on how Third World feminist media producers voice women's issues, and the obstacles they faced in building unity within their organization. Four journalists of women's radio RJP in Jakarta, Indonesia were interviewed and observed to conceptualize their lives, work, and backgrounds within feminist practices. Radio scripts and organization documents were also used to provide the detailed in-depth picture of the making of radio program. This study exposed a lack of unity of effort between …

Children's Social Behaviors And Peer Interactions In Diverse Cultures, Carolyn P. Edwards, Maria Rosario De Guzman, Jill Brown, Asiye Kumru Jan 2006

Children's Social Behaviors And Peer Interactions In Diverse Cultures, Carolyn P. Edwards, Maria Rosario De Guzman, Jill Brown, Asiye Kumru

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Cultural socialization has long interested behavioral and social scientists, but recent advances in theory and methodology have allowed researchers to construct new and more powerful theoretical frameworks for conceptualizing the complex ways in which children interact with their environments during the course of development. Studies of childhood socialization in the classic tradition of cross-cultural research were static in their approach to analyzing underlying processes because of limitations in the theories and methods available at the time they were conducted. Many studies, for example, involved straightforward associations or comparisons of levels of parental socialization pressure (the antecedent condition) with children's social …

The Sociopolitical Construction Of Race And Literary Representations Of The Biracial Subject, Kara Fontenot Jan 2006

The Sociopolitical Construction Of Race And Literary Representations Of The Biracial Subject, Kara Fontenot

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Twentieth-century American literature incorporates interracial and biracial themes that bring to light the often unnamed and unrecognized biracial identities of many Americans. Unfortunately, despite the potential value for a deeper understanding of the construction of race, these themes have seldom been seriously considered in the context of reevaluating the nature of the system that creates racial labels and categories until the recent emergence of postmodern critical theories. This thesis examines the black-white interracial themes and biracial protagonists in Nella Larsen's Quicksand (1928) and Danzy Senna's Caucasia (1998) in order to explore the texts' representations of systems of hegemonic power that …

Toward Praxis, Emily Houh Jan 2006

Toward Praxis, Emily Houh

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

This Essay, written for a 2005 symposium issue of the U.C. Davis Law Review, responds to an important question posed by the symposium organizers: What is the future of critical race feminism? In this Essay, I use a common law contractual good faith antidiscrimination claim, developed and proposed by me in a series of previously written articles, to help answer that question. While, in the past, my proposed good faith claim aimed principally to operationalize some recurring and foundational insights of critical race theory, such as the race crits' critique of the intentionality requirement in conventional antidiscrimination law, the Davis …

Turning Points In Relationships With Disliked Co-Workers, Jon A. Hess, Becky Lynn Omdahl, Janie M. Harden Fritz

Communication Faculty Publications

Although most people begin their employment with the education and on-the-job training to handle the tasks their jobs entail, few long-term employees boast that they feel competent in dealing with all the difficult people they encounter in the workplace. Unpleasant coworkers range from annoying nuisances to major sources of job frustration and career roadblocks. Given that periodic preoccupation with unlovable coworkers is nearly a universal feature of organizational life, it is not surprising that such relationships are given due attention in the media and popular press (e.g., Bramson, 1989; Topchik, 2000). What is surprising is how little scholarly attention has …
