Terrorism And College Students: A Generation's Response To September 11, 2001, Robert Mason Wild Feb 2006

Terrorism And College Students: A Generation's Response To September 11, 2001, Robert Mason Wild

Dissertations

The terrorist attacks on the United States of September 11, 2001 marked a significant cultural turning point for Americans. The tragic destruction of the World Trade Towers , the damage to the Pentagon and the loss of thousands of civilian lives brought an end to the optimism and feelings of security and invulnerability that marked the decade of the 1990s. Students who were enrolled in college at the time of the attacks were affected as well. This qualitative study examines the emotions and attitudes of 50 students enrolled a mid-sized, private research institution on September 11, 2001. The study explores …

Music And Moral Geographies: Constructions Of "Nation" And Identity In Singapore, Lily Kong Feb 2006

Music And Moral Geographies: Constructions Of "Nation" And Identity In Singapore, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In this paper, I attempt to pull together sociological and geographical perspectives in the study of music to understand the ways in which pop and rock music are socio-cultural products with political and moral meanings and implications. I examine state engineering of moral panics, focusing on a case study of pop and rock music in post-independence Singapore. Such engineering is aimed at political and ideological ends, in particular, "nation"- building outcomes. In engineering moral panics through both discursive and legislative acts, the contours of a moral geography are delineated at various spatial scales. First, at the scale of the national …

“You’Re My Parent But You’Re Not”: Dialectical Tensions In Stepchildren’S Perceptions About Communicating With The Nonresidential Parent, Dawn O. Braithwaite, Leslie A. Baxter Feb 2006

“You’Re My Parent But You’Re Not”: Dialectical Tensions In Stepchildren’S Perceptions About Communicating With The Nonresidential Parent, Dawn O. Braithwaite, Leslie A. Baxter

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

The nonresidential parent plays a role in the lives of stepchildren and in stepfamily households. The focus of the present study was on the interaction between the nonresidential parent and his/her child who resides as part of a stepfamily household. Grounded in relational dialectics theory, the researchers performed an interpretive analysis of 50 transcribed interviews with college-aged stepchildren. Stepchildren’s perceptions of communication with the nonresidential parent were animated by two contradictions: parenting/nonparenting and openness/closedness. These two contradictions form a totality, interwoven with one another. The parenting/nonparenting contradiction reflected stepchildren’s ambivalence over parenting attempts of nonresidential parents. Stepchildren wanted nonresidential parent …

The Minister For Education And Sociology Of Education: Australian Textbooks 1970-2005, Anthony Potts Jan 2006

The Minister For Education And Sociology Of Education: Australian Textbooks 1970-2005, Anthony Potts

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Relations between Ministers for Education and Faculties of Education have often been uneasy. The history of Australian teacher education readily attests to this (Hyams, 1979). This paper uses comments by Australia’s then Federal Minister for Education, Dr Brendon Nelson, on the place and utility of sociology in teacher education courses as a catalyst to examine the content of social foundations of education textbooks for the period 1970-2005.

Participant Reactions To Two-Way Immersion (Twi) Programs, Brett Frayseth, Carrie Lewis Miller, James Livermont, Melissa Siebke

IT Solutions Publications

The purpose of this study was to elicit participant reactions to two-way immersion (TWI) programs in the United States of America. A large number of recent studies have focused on instructor views and perspectives of two-way immersion programs, so this study aimed to gain insight from students who are, or who have, participated in TWI programs throughout North America.

One hundred fifty-one TWI schools throughout the United States were contacted and asked to participate in this study. Two similar surveys were developed, one for current TWI students, and another for former TWI students. Students from these two groups were asked …

The Rhizomatic Relations Of A/R/Tography, Rita L. Irwin, Ruth Beer, Stephanie Springgay, Kit Grauer, Gu Xiong, Barbara Bickel

A/A/r/tography is a form of practice-based research steeped in the arts and education. Alongside other arts-based, arts-informed and aesthetically defined methodologies, a/r/tography is one of many emerging forms of inquiry that refer to the arts as a way of re-searching the world to enhance understanding. Yet, it goes even further by recognizing the educative potential of teaching and learning as acts of inquiry. Together, the arts and education complement, resist, and echo one another through rhizomatic relations of living inquiry. In this article, we demonstrate rhizomatic relations in an ongoing project entitled “The City of Richgate” where meanings are constructed …

Legitimizing Indigenous Knowledge In Zimbabwe: A Theoretical Analysis Of Postcolonial School Knowledge And Its Colonial Legacy, Edward Shizha Jan 2006

Legitimizing Indigenous Knowledge In Zimbabwe: A Theoretical Analysis Of Postcolonial School Knowledge And Its Colonial Legacy, Edward Shizha

Youth and Children's Studies

This article is a theoretical discussion on the social construction of knowledge in colonial and postcolonial Zimbabwe. It examines effects of hegemonic knowledge constructions and how they may be delegitimated through incorporating indigenous knowledge in postcolonial school curricular. The article questions the importance attached to Eurocentric school knowledge and the devaluation of indigenous knowledge in postcolonial states. It further argues that indigenous knowledge as informal knowledge plays a major role in society and should be formalized in educational institutions to constitute a transformative and inclusive educational system. The article proposes hybridization of knowledge to give voice to the formerly marginalized …
