Liana Habitat Associations And Community Structure In A Bornean Lowland Tropical Forest, Saara J. Dewalt, Kalan Ickes, Reuben Nilus, Kyle E. Harms, David F.R.P. Burslem

Faculty Publications

Lianas (woody vines) contribute substantially to the diversity and structure of most tropical forests, yet little is known about the importance of habitat specialization in maintaining tropical liana diversity and the causes of variation among forests in liana abundance and species composition. We examined habitat associations, species diversity, species composition, and community structure of lianas at Sepilok Forest Reserve, Sabah, Malaysia in northeastern Borneo among three soil types that give rise to three distinct forest types of lowland tropical rain forest: alluvial, sandstone hill, and kerangas (heath) forest. Alluvial soils are more nutrient rich and have higher soil moisture than …

Changing Nature: Globalization And Economic Reforms In Brazil, Lucas Gimenes Loureiro Oct 2006

Changing Nature: Globalization And Economic Reforms In Brazil, Lucas Gimenes Loureiro

Theses and Dissertations

Globalization is affecting our lives in ways that we never expected before. Greater interdependence, some scholars argue, weakens the ability of nation-states to retain their authority over individuals and corporations. However, nation-states are highly adaptable and they have the power to maintain their primacy .

Governments have the ability to choose which model of development their economies should pursue. Thus, based on the choice of economic model, nation-states shape their economies and the way business operates within it. In other words, governments will essentially steer their economies in a certain direction, even though they cannot determine the exact path that …

Forward: Symposium On Interdisciplinary Perspectives On Bankruptcy Reform, Michelle A. Cecil

Faculty Publications

In 2003, over 1.6 million consumers filed for bankruptcy protection, surpassing the previous record of 1.5 million bankruptcy filings set just one year earlier. In an effort to reverse the spiraling upward trend of consumer bankruptcies, and to prevent abusive debtors from using the bankruptcy system to avoid paying their debts, in April, 2005, Congress voted overwhelmingly in favor of passing the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 (BAPCPA). Widely heralded as the most sweeping bankruptcy reform legislation in over a quarter of a century, BAPCPA was designed in large part to force debtors with the ability …

Bankruptcy Reform: What's Tax Got To Do With It?, Michelle A. Cecil Oct 2006

Bankruptcy Reform: What's Tax Got To Do With It?, Michelle A. Cecil

Faculty Publications

The article takes a two-pronged approach to the issue. First, it argues that all post-petition appreciation should be taxed to the debtor rather than to the debtor's bankruptcy estate because the debtor enjoys the benefits of the asset's appreciation in value and because, from a tax perspective, the results will be identical irrespective of whether the debtor or the bankruptcy estate is taxed on the asset's post-petition appreciation. Second, the article proposes that the gain accruing before the termination of the bankruptcy proceeding be treated as discharge of indebtedness income so that the debtor can defer recognition of the gain …

"Some Spirit Was Pursuing All Of Us": Literary Perspectives On Death, Tess Stockslager Oct 2006

"Some Spirit Was Pursuing All Of Us": Literary Perspectives On Death, Tess Stockslager

Senior Honors Theses

This paper will pursue the theme of death as a transgression against the created order through the works of five authors-the Apostle Paul, William Shakespeare, Alfred Telmyson, Dylan Thomas, and J.R.R. Tolkien-while also providing a brief overview of the perspectives on death presented in each author's writings. The paper will demonstrate that although the five authors treat death with varying degrees of positive and negative tone, often in proportion to the orthodoxy of their Christian beliefs, their writings are in agreement that man was not created to die, and that death should not be spoken or written of lightly.

Interfacial Stick-Slip Transition In Simple Shear Of Entangled Melts, Pouyan E. Boukany, Prashant Tapadia, Shi-Qing Wang Oct 2006

Interfacial Stick-Slip Transition In Simple Shear Of Entangled Melts, Pouyan E. Boukany, Prashant Tapadia, Shi-Qing Wang

College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering

This article describes a systematic investigation of a discontinuous interfacial stick-slip transition (SST) in simple shear of monodisperse entangled 1,4-polybutadiene (PBD) and polyisoprene (PIP) melts with different molecular weights and architecture, using a specially designed controlled-force shear rheometer. The magnitude of the transition is found to be determined by the level of chain entanglement. Specifically, the dependence of extrapolation length b on molecular weight as b similar to M-w(3.4) and of the melt viscosity as b similar to eta is consistent with the observations based on capillary rheometric studies [X. Yang et al., Rheol. Acta 37, 415-423 (1998)]. The interfacial …

Designing A Nanotube Using Naturally Occurring Protein Building Blocks, Jie Zheng Oct 2006

Designing A Nanotube Using Naturally Occurring Protein Building Blocks, Jie Zheng

Chemical, Biomolecular, and Corrosion Engineering Faculty Research

Here our goal is to carry out nanotube design using naturally occurring protein building blocks. Inspection of the protein structural database reveals the richness of the conformations of proteins, their parts, and their chemistry. Given target functional protein nanotube geometry, our strategy involves scanning a library of candidate building blocks, combinatorially assembling them into the shape and testing its stability. Since self-assembly takes place on time scales not affordable for computations, here we propose a strategy for the very first step in protein nanotube design: we map the candidate building blocks onto a planar sheet and wrap the sheet around …

Large-Scale Drainage Capture And Surface Uplift In Eastern Tibet-Sw China Before 24 Ma Inferred From Sediments Of The Hanoi Basin, Vietnam, Peter D. Clift, Jerzy Blusztajn, Nguyen Anh Duc Oct 2006

Large-Scale Drainage Capture And Surface Uplift In Eastern Tibet-Sw China Before 24 Ma Inferred From Sediments Of The Hanoi Basin, Vietnam, Peter D. Clift, Jerzy Blusztajn, Nguyen Anh Duc

Faculty Publications

Current models of drainage evolution suggest that the non-dendritic patterns seen in rivers in SE Asia reflect progressive capture of headwaters away from the Red River during and as a result of surface uplift of Eastern Asia. Mass balancing of eroded and deposited rock volumes demonstrates that the Red River catchment must have been much larger in the past. In addition, the Nd isotope composition of sediments from the Hanoi Basin, Vietnam, interpreted as paleo-Red River sediments, shows rapid change during the Oligocene, before ~24 Ma. We interpret this change to reflect large-scale drainage capture away from the Red River, …

Thermochronology Of Mineral Grains In The Red And Mekong Rivers, Vietnam: Provenance And Exhumation Implications For Southeast Asia, Peter D. Clift, Andrew Carter, Ian H. Campbell, Malcolm S. Pringle, Nguyen Van Lap, Charlotte M. Allen, Kip V. Hodges, Mai Thanh Tan Oct 2006

Thermochronology Of Mineral Grains In The Red And Mekong Rivers, Vietnam: Provenance And Exhumation Implications For Southeast Asia, Peter D. Clift, Andrew Carter, Ian H. Campbell, Malcolm S. Pringle, Nguyen Van Lap, Charlotte M. Allen, Kip V. Hodges, Mai Thanh Tan

Faculty Publications

Sand samples from the mouths of the Red and Mekong Rivers were analyzed to determine the provenance and exhumation history of their source regions. U-Pb dating of detrital zircon grains shows that the main sources comprise crust formed within the Yangtze Craton and during the Triassic Indosinian Orogeny. Indosinian grains in the Mekong are younger (210-240 Ma) than those in the Red River (230-290 Ma), suggesting preferential erosion of the Qiangtang Block of Tibet into the Mekong. The Red River has a higher proportion of 700-800 Ma grains originally derived from the Yangtze Craton. 40Ar/ 39Ar dating of muscovite grains …

Thermal Stability Landscape For Klenow Dna Polymerase As A Function Of Ph And Salt Concentration, Allison J. Richard, Chin Chi Liu, Alexandra L. Klinger, Matthew J. Todd, Tara M. Mezzasalma, Vince J. Licata Oct 2006

Thermal Stability Landscape For Klenow Dna Polymerase As A Function Of Ph And Salt Concentration, Allison J. Richard, Chin Chi Liu, Alexandra L. Klinger, Matthew J. Todd, Tara M. Mezzasalma, Vince J. Licata

Faculty Publications

The thermal denaturation of Klenow DNA polymerase has been characterized over a wide variety of solution conditions to obtain a relative stability landscape for the protein. Measurements were conducted utilizing a miniaturized fluorescence assay that measures Tm based on the increase in the fluorescence of 1,8-anilinonaphthalene sulfonate (ANS) when the protein denatures. The melting temperature (Tm) for Klenow increases as the salt concentration is increased and as the pH is decreased. Klenow's Tm spans a range of over 20 °C, from 40 to 62 °C, depending upon the solution conditions. The landscape reconciles and extends previously measured Tm values for …

Monoreflections Of Archimedean ℓ-Groups, Regular Σ-Frames And Regular Lindelöf Frames, A. W. Hager, J. J. Madden Oct 2006

Monoreflections Of Archimedean ℓ-Groups, Regular Σ-Frames And Regular Lindelöf Frames, A. W. Hager, J. J. Madden

Faculty Publications

We prove that in the category of Archimedean lattice-ordered groups with weak unit there is no homomorphism-closed monoreflection strictly between the strongest essential monoreflection (the so-called "closure under countable composition") and the strongest monoreflection (the epicompletion). It follows that in the category of regular σ-frames, the only non-trivial monoreflective subcategory that is hereditary with respect to closed quotients consists of the boolean σ-algebras. Also, in the category of regular Lindelöf locales, there is only one non-trivial closed-hereditary epi-coreflection. The proof hinges on an elementary lemma about the kinds of discontinuities that are exhibited by the elements of a composition-closed l-group …

Estimation Of The Rigid-Body Motion From Three-Dimensional Images Using A Generalized Center-Of-Mass Points Approach, B. Feng, P. P. Bruyant, P. H. Pretorius, R. D. Beach, H. C. Gifford, J. Dey, M. A. Gennert, M. A. King

Faculty Publications

We present an analytical method for the estimation of rigid-body motion in sets of three-dimensional (3-D) SPECT and PET slices. This method utilizes mathematically defined generalized center-of-mass points in images, requiring no segmentation. It can be applied to compensation of the rigid-body motion in both SPECT and PET, once a series of 3-D tomographic images are available. We generalized the formula for the center-of-mass to obtain a family of points comoving with the object's rigid-body motion. From the family of possible points we chose the best three points which resulted in the minimum root-mean-square difference between images as the generalized …

Consistent Discretization And Canonical, Classical And Quantum Regge Calculus, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin Oct 2006

Consistent Discretization And Canonical, Classical And Quantum Regge Calculus, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin

Faculty Publications

We apply the "consistent discretization" technique to the Regge action for (Euclidean and Lorentzian) general relativity in arbitrary number of dimensions. The result is a well-defined canonical theory that is free of constraints and where the dynamics is implemented as a canonical transformation. In the Lorentzian case, the framework appears to be naturally free of the "spikes" that plague traditional formulations. It also provides a well-defined recipe for determining the integration measure for quantum Regge calculus. © World Scientific Publishing Company.
