Search For Neutral, Long-Lived Particles Decaying Into Two Muons In Pp̅ Collisions At √S = 1:96 Tev, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration Oct 2006

Search For Neutral, Long-Lived Particles Decaying Into Two Muons In Pp̅ Collisions At √S = 1:96 Tev, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We present a search for a neutral particle, pair produced in pp̅ collisions at√s = 1.96 TeV, which decays into two muons and lives long enough to travel at least 5 cm before decaying. The analysis uses ≈ 380 pb-1 of data recorded with the D0 detector. The background is estimated to be about one event. No candidates are observed, and limits are set on the pair-production cross section times branching fraction into dimuons + X for such particles. For a mass of 10 GeVand lifetime of 4 × 10-11 s, we exclude values greater than 0.14 pb …

Search For The Standard Model Higgs Boson In The Pp̅→ Zh → Νν̅Bb̅ Channel, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration Oct 2006

Search For The Standard Model Higgs Boson In The Pp̅→ Zh → Νν̅Bb̅ Channel, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We report a search for the standard model (SM) Higgs boson based on data collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 260 pb-1. We study events with missing transverse energy and two acoplanar b jets, which provide sensitivity to the ZH production cross section in the νν̅bb̅ channel, and to WH production when the lepton from the W → ℓν decay is undetected. The data are consistent with the SM background expectation, and we set 95% C.L. upper limits on σ(pp̅ → ZH/WH) × …

Superconductivity In Metal-Mixed Ion-Implanted Polymer Films, A. P. Micolich, E. Tavenner, B. J. Powell, A. R. Hamilton, M. T. Curry, Ryan E. Giedd, P. Meredith Oct 2006

Superconductivity In Metal-Mixed Ion-Implanted Polymer Films, A. P. Micolich, E. Tavenner, B. J. Powell, A. R. Hamilton, M. T. Curry, Ryan E. Giedd, P. Meredith

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

Ion implantation of normally insulating polymers offers an alternative to depositing conjugated organics onto plastic films to make electronic circuits. We used a 50 keV nitrogen ion beam to mix a thin 10 nm SnSb alloy film into the subsurface of polyetheretherketone and report the low temperature properties of this material. We observed metallic behavior, and the onset of superconductivity below 3 K. There are strong indications that the superconductivity does not result from a residual thin film of alloy, but instead from a network of alloy grains coupled via a weakly conducting, ion-beam carbonized polymer matrix.

A Prototype Platform For Array Feed Development, James Richard Nagel Oct 2006

A Prototype Platform For Array Feed Development, James Richard Nagel

Theses and Dissertations

Radio frequency interference (RFI) is a growing problem for radio astronomers. One potential solution utilizes spatial filtering by placing an array of electrically small antennas at the focal plane of a parabolic reflector. This thesis documents the design and characterization of a prototype array feed and RF receiver that were used to demonstrate the spatial filtering principle. The array consists of a 7-element hexagonal arrangement of thickened dipole antennas tuned to a center frequency of 1600 MHz. The receiver is a two-stage, low-noise frequency mixer that is tunable over the entire L-band. This thesis also documents a new receiver design …

Casimir Forces And Non-Newtonian Gravitation, Roberto Onofrio Oct 2006

Casimir Forces And Non-Newtonian Gravitation, Roberto Onofrio

Dartmouth Scholarship

The search for non-relativistic deviations from Newtonian gravitation can lead to new phenomena signalling the unification of gravity with the other fundamental interactions. Various recent theoretical frameworks indicate a possible window for non-Newtonian forces with gravitational coupling strength in the micrometre range. The major expected background in the same range is attributable to the Casimir force or variants of it if dielectric materials, rather than conducting ones, are considered. Here we review the measurements of the Casimir force performed so far in the micrometre range and how they determine constraints on non-Newtonian gravitation, also discussing the dominant sources of false …

The P14 Fusion-Associated Small Transmembrane (Fast) Protein Effects Membrane Fusion From A Subset Of Membrane Microdomains, Jennifer A. Corcoran, Jayme Salsman, Roberto De Antueno, Ahmed Touhami, Manfred H. Jericho, Eileen K. Clancy, Roy Duncan Oct 2006

The P14 Fusion-Associated Small Transmembrane (Fast) Protein Effects Membrane Fusion From A Subset Of Membrane Microdomains, Jennifer A. Corcoran, Jayme Salsman, Roberto De Antueno, Ahmed Touhami, Manfred H. Jericho, Eileen K. Clancy, Roy Duncan

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

The reovirus fusion-associated small transmembrane (FAST) proteins are a unique family of viral membrane fusion proteins. These nonstructural viral proteins induce efficient cell-cell rather than virus-cell membrane fusion. We analyzed the lipid environment in which the reptilian reovirus p14 FAST protein resides to determine the influence of the cell membrane on the fusion activity of the FAST proteins. Topographical mapping of the surface of fusogenic p14-containing liposomes by atomic force microscopy under aqueous conditions revealed that p14 resides almost exclusively in thickened membrane microdomains. In transfected cells, p14 was found in both Lubrol WX-and Triton X-100-resistant membrane complexes. Cholesterol depletion …

Statistical Analysis Of Air Pollution Panel Studies: An Illustration, Holly Janes, Lianne Sheppard, Kristen Shepherd Oct 2006

Statistical Analysis Of Air Pollution Panel Studies: An Illustration, Holly Janes, Lianne Sheppard, Kristen Shepherd

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

The panel study design is commonly used to evaluate the short-term health effects of air pollution. Standard statistical methods for analyzing longitudinal data are available, but the literature reveals that the techniques are not well understood by practitioners. We illustrate these methods using data from the 1999 to 2002 Seattle panel study. Marginal, conditional, and transitional approaches for modeling longitudinal data are reviewed and contrasted with respect to their parameter interpretation and methods for accounting for correlation and dealing with missing data. We also discuss and illustrate techniques for controlling for time-dependent and time-independent confounding, and for exploring and summarizing …

Late Holocene Lake-Level Fluctuations In Walker Lake, Nevada, Usa, Fasong Yuan, Braddock K. Linsley, Stephen S. Howe, Steve P. Lund, John P. Mcgeehin

Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications

alker Lake, a hydrologically closed, saline, and alkaline lake, is situated along the western margin of the Great Basin in Nevada of the western United States. Analyses of the magnetic susceptibility (χ), total inorganic carbon (TIC), and oxygen isotopic composition (δ18O) of carbonate sediments including ostracode shells (Limnocythere ceriotuberosa) from Walker Lake allow us to extend the sediment record of lake-level fluctuations back to 2700 years B.P. There are approximately five major stages over the course of the late Holocene hydrologic evolution in Walker Lake: an early lowstand (> 2400 years B.P.), a lake-filling …
