The Politics Of Space And Culture In Santiago, Chile's Street Markets, Joel Stillerman Oct 2006

The Politics Of Space And Culture In Santiago, Chile's Street Markets, Joel Stillerman

Peer Reviewed Articles

Recent discussions of contentious politics have focused on struggles in and over space and place. This article builds upon these concerns by using ethnographic, interview, and documentary data to analyze the spatial politics of street market vendors in Santiago, Chile. Drawing upon Lefebvre’s concepts of perceived, conceived, and lived space as well as ideas drawn from research on space and protest, I show how street market vendors build upon spatial routines, a sense of place, political alliances, and scale jumping in their self-defense strategies at the local, national, and international scales. The findings illustrate Lefebvre’s argument that the advance of …

Nepal And Bhutan: Development Strategies And Growth, Kamal P. Upadhyaya, Gyan Pradhan, Dharmendra Dhakal Oct 2006

Nepal And Bhutan: Development Strategies And Growth, Kamal P. Upadhyaya, Gyan Pradhan, Dharmendra Dhakal

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

This paper has sought to examine the factors that have contributed to the economic growth of Nepal and Bhutan. After a brief discussion of the economy and growth strategy of each country, standard growth models for Nepal and Bhutan are developed and estimated. The results indicate that domestic capital has been a significant source of economic growth in Nepal whereas foreign aid has not had any appreciable effect on growth. The reverse is true for Bhutan.

Remote Bond Breaking By Interacting Temporary Anion States, Paul Burrow, Gordon A. Gallup Oct 2006

Remote Bond Breaking By Interacting Temporary Anion States, Paul Burrow, Gordon A. Gallup

Gordon Gallup Publications

The cross section for bond breaking at the site of a dissociative temporary negative ion state through the dissociative electron attachment process can be considerably enhanced by the presence of a second longer-lived temporary negative ion state elsewhere in the molecule, even one quite remote from the first. In a series of chloroalkenes possessing both C–Cl and C=C bonds separated by various distances, we show that the cross sections are determined by the lifetime of the lower anion state created by the mixing of the anion states of these two moieties, with the wave function’s coefficients giving the probability that …

The Paperless Accounting Classroom: The Perceptions And Experiences Of Students In A Newly Designed Course, Steve Teeter, Susan R. Madsen, Jason Hughes, Brent Eagar Oct 2006

The Paperless Accounting Classroom: The Perceptions And Experiences Of Students In A Newly Designed Course, Steve Teeter, Susan R. Madsen, Jason Hughes, Brent Eagar

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

Although financial accounting practices in business have capitalized on the use of technology, this technology has not been fully integrated in higher education for accounting students. While traditional accounting courses laboriously involve rote transcription of debits and credits, educational technology in accounting courses may prove inherently beneficial. Faculty members designed and offered a paperless accounting course that utilized a variety of technologies. This study explored student perceptions regarding the satisfaction and effectiveness of three of these technologies: 1) the Classroom Performance System (CPS) response pad (clicker) from eInstruction.com, 2) PC Tablet (teacher use); and 3) WebCT. This study analyzes the …

The Anchor, Volume 120.06: October 18, 2006, Hope College

The Anchor: 2006

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Why Don't People Read The Manual?, David G. Novick, Karen Ward Oct 2006

Why Don't People Read The Manual?, David G. Novick, Karen Ward

Departmental Papers (CS)

Few users of computer applications seek help from the documentation. This paper reports the results of an empirical study of why this is so and examines how, in real work, users solve their usability problems. Based on in-depth interviews with 25 subjects representing a varied cross-section of users, we find that users do avoid using both paper and online help systems. Few users have paper manuals for the most heavily used applications, but none complained about their lack. Online help is more likely to be consulted than paper manuals, but users are equally likely to report that they solve their …

What Users Say They Want In Documentation, David G. Novick, Karen Ward Oct 2006

What Users Say They Want In Documentation, David G. Novick, Karen Ward

Departmental Papers (CS)

While earlier work provided a partial view of users’ preferences about manuals, for most users in most work contexts the important question remains open: What do users want in documentation? This paper presents the results of a study in which a diverse cross-section of 25 users was interviewed in depth about their needs and preferences with respect to software help systems, whether printed or on-line, that they use at work. The study’s participants indicated that they preferred documentation, whether online or printed, that is easy to navigate, provides explanations at an appropriate level of technical detail, enables finding as well …

Celecoxib Decreases Prostaglandin E2 Concentrations In Nipple Aspirate Fluid From High Risk Postmenopausal Women And Women With Breast Cancer, Edward R. Sauter, Wenyi Quin, Lisa Schlatter, John E. Hewett, John T. Flynn Oct 2006

Celecoxib Decreases Prostaglandin E2 Concentrations In Nipple Aspirate Fluid From High Risk Postmenopausal Women And Women With Breast Cancer, Edward R. Sauter, Wenyi Quin, Lisa Schlatter, John E. Hewett, John T. Flynn

Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics Faculty Papers

Background

Celecoxib inhibits PGE2 production in cancerous tissue. We previously reported that PGE2 levels in nipple aspirate fluid (NAF) and plasma were not decreased in women at increased breast cancer risk who received celecoxib 200 mg twice daily (bid). The endpoints of the current study were to determine if a short course of celecoxib 400 mg bid would decrease PGE2 levels in women 1) at increased breast cancer risk, and 2) with established breast cancer.

Methods

NAF and plasma samples were collected before, 2 weeks after taking celecoxib 400 mg bid, and two weeks after washout from 26 women who …

Measurement Of The Inclusive Jet Cross Section In Pp̅ Interactions At √S = 1:96 Tev Using A Cone-Based Jet Algorithm, A. Abulencia, Kenneth A. Bloom, Cdf Collaboration Oct 2006

Measurement Of The Inclusive Jet Cross Section In Pp̅ Interactions At √S = 1:96 Tev Using A Cone-Based Jet Algorithm, A. Abulencia, Kenneth A. Bloom, Cdf Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We present a measurement of the inclusive jet cross section in pp̅ interactions at √s = 1:96 TeV using 385 pb-1 of data collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The results are obtained using an improved cone-based jet algorithm (Midpoint). The data cover the jet transverse momentum range from 61 to 620 GeV/c, extending the reach by almost 150 GeV/c compared with previous measurements at the Tevatron. The results are in good agreement with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD predictions using the CTEQ6.1M parton distribution functions.
