Self-Socialization Of Gender, Meenakshi Menon Jan 2006

Self-Socialization Of Gender, Meenakshi Menon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

A gender self-socialization model was conceptualized, wherein gender identity and idiographic gender stereotypes conjointly influence children's adoption of gendered behavior (i.e., gender typing). Further, children differ in their beliefs of sex differences as immutable versus fluid (entity vs. incremental theory); and it was hypothesized that entity beliefs would moderate the self-socialization process. Children (N=305, M age 10.8 years) responded to gender identity, gender stereotype, and self-efficacy measures. Two kinds of gender typing were computed. Personal gender typing was the correlation between personal stereotypes and self-efficacy; consensus gender typing was the correlation between the same-sex peer stereotypes and self-efficacy. Results indicated …

Reputation-Based System For Encouraging Cooperation Of Nodes In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Tiranuch. Anantvalee Jan 2006

Reputation-Based System For Encouraging Cooperation Of Nodes In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Tiranuch. Anantvalee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

In a mobile ad hoc network, node cooperation in packet forwarding is required for the network to function properly. However, since nodes in this network usually have limited resources, some selfish nodes might intend not to forward packets to save resources for their own use. To discourage such behavior, we propose RMS, a reputation-based system, to detect selfish nodes and respond to them by showing that being cooperative will benefit there more than being selfish. We also detect, to some degree, nodes who forward only the necessary amount of packets to avoid being detected as selfish. We introduce the use …

Role Of Asset Reliability And Auditor Quality In Equity Valuation, Yaser. Fallatah Jan 2006

Role Of Asset Reliability And Auditor Quality In Equity Valuation, Yaser. Fallatah

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This paper brings together the auditor quality, asset reliability and firm valuation literatures by examining the role of auditor quality in equity valuation. The study broadly follows the Richardson et al. (2005) categorization of the reliability of accounting accruals of balance sheet components and conjectures that the role of auditor quality in equity valuation is more pronounced when asset reliability is not high. Auditor quality is measured using reputation, industry specialist and tenure metrics. The underlying assumption is that auditor quality enhances the market's perception of firm value; as such, auditor quality may mitigate the cost of security mispricing documented …

Religious Students In The Writing Class, Anne Bosworth Jan 2006

Religious Students In The Writing Class, Anne Bosworth

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Although the typical writing instructor might not be likely to have numerous encounters with fundamentalist students throughout the course of a career, most writing instructors will almost certainly have students who write in and from a range of religious, political, and ideological contexts. Because such students often struggle against writing pedagogies that promote cultural pluralism and social justice through liberal or left-wing political ideologies, ethnographic examination of religious ideology and politics is a valuable critical tool for reflection for composition scholars as they consider how to address religious discourse, faith-based claims, and religious political agendas in their students' writings, class …

Shifts In Copepod Grazing On Varying Concentrations Of Two Bioluminescent Dinoflagellate Species, Karen A. Breitlow Jan 2006

Shifts In Copepod Grazing On Varying Concentrations Of Two Bioluminescent Dinoflagellate Species, Karen A. Breitlow

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Grazing on bioluminescent and nonluminescent prey by the copepod Acartia tonsa was examined to determine the effect dinoflagellate bioluminescence has on copepod feeding preferences and rates. The percentage of cells ml-1 remaining after 30 minutes of copepod grazing on the dinoflagellates Lingulodinium polyedrum and Pyrodinium bahamense in their bioluminescent and nonbioluminescent phases was used to compare results for concentrations of 10, 1,000, and 3,000 cells ml-1. The nonluminescent diatom Thalassiosira eccentrica was later offered along with each of the dinoflagellates. When diatoms were offered with P. bahamense, the copepods consumed them in equal amounts regardless of bioluminescence at the lower …

Role Of Methionine Sulfoxide Reductase (Msra) On Aging And Oxidative Stress In Drosophila, Katie Foss Jan 2006

Role Of Methionine Sulfoxide Reductase (Msra) On Aging And Oxidative Stress In Drosophila, Katie Foss

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Oxidative damage is an inevitable consequence of aerobic respiration. Methionine sulfoxide reductases (Msr) are a group of enzymes that function to repair oxidized methionine residues in both free methionine and methionine in proteins. MsrA was the first of these enzymes to be discovered and is the most thoroughly studied. It is thought to play a role in both the aging process and probably several neurodegenerative diseases. I recently obtained a strain of Drosophila that was reported to have a P-element transposon located within Exon 2 (part of the open reading frame) of the eip71cd gene, which is the Drosophila homolog …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The signature whistles of related Atlantic spotted dolphins ( Stenella frontalis) in the Bahamas were evaluated for similarity. Judges compared the contour patterns of signature whistles pair-wise between 19 dolphins. Whistle parameters between the signature whistles of individuals were statistically compared. There were no significant differences between the signature whistles of male and female calves when the similarity of their whistles was compared to their mothers. However, there was a tendency with female calves more likely to produce signature whistles similar to their mothers' whistles. Three out of five female calves produced signature whistles that were "very similar" or "similar" …

Statistical Physics Inspired Methods To Assign Statistical Significance In Bioinformatics And Proteomics: From Sequence Comparison To Mass Spectrometry Based Peptide Sequencing, Gelio Alves

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

After the sequencing of many complete genomes, we are in a post-genomic era in which the most important task has changed from gathering genetic information to organizing the mass of data as well as under standing how components interact with each other. The former is usually undertaking using bioinformatics methods, while the latter task is generally termed proteomics. Success in both parts demands correct statistical significance assignments for results found. In my dissertation. I study two concrete examples: global sequence alignment statistics and peptide sequencing/identification using mass spectrometry. High-performance liquid chromatography coupled to a mass spectrometer (HPLC/MS/MS), enabling peptide identifications …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Currently, there is a great deal of interest in the role of sulfur in the seagrass ecosystems and for sulfide, a known phytotoxin, in particular. This research used a 35S tracer technique to examine sulfur metabolism in the seagrass Thalassia testudinum. The uptake of the 35S radiotracer was documented at similar rates under both oxic and anoxic treatments. The highest total radioactivity was in root and rhizome tissue, as compared to the leaves. 35S translocation from roots to leaves was found to be more efficient in young versus mature leaves. Total sulfur uptake was estimated and found to be significantly …

Software Decomposition For Multicore Architectures, Ankit. Jain Jan 2006

Software Decomposition For Multicore Architectures, Ankit. Jain

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Current multicore processors attempt to optimize consumer experience via task partitioning and concurrent execution of these (sub)tasks on the cores. Conversion of sequential code to parallel and concurrent code is neither easy, nor feasible with current methodologies. We have developed a mapping process that synergistically uses top-down and bottom-up methodologies. This process is amenable to automation. We use bottom-up analysis to determine decomposability and estimate computation and communication metrics. The outcome is a set of proposals for software decomposition. We then build abstract concurrent models that map these decomposed (abstract) software modules onto candidate multicore architectures; this resolves concurrency issues. …

System Level Modeling And Simulation With Mldesigner, Fabiano Kovalski Jan 2006

System Level Modeling And Simulation With Mldesigner, Fabiano Kovalski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

System modeling has the potential to enhance system design productivity by providing a platform for system performance evaluations. This model must be designed at an abstract level, hiding system details. However, it must represent any subsystem or its components at any level of specification details. In order to model such a system, we will need to combine various models-of-computation (MOC). MOC provide a framework to model various algorithms and activities, while accounting for and exploiting concurrency and synchronization aspects. Along with supporting various MOC, a modeling environment should also support a well developed library. In this thesis, we have explored …

The Relationship Between Item Difficulty And Discrimination Indices In Multiple-Choice Tests In A Physical Science Course, Angelica Hotiu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

We have developed a method of quantifying multiple-choice test items in an introductory physical science course in terms of the various tasks required to solve the problem. We assign a numerical level of difficulty to each task so that any question can be assigned a degree of difficulty, which is the sum of the individual levels of difficulty associated in each steps. Using the questions and results from the tests we have investigated the relationship between the degree of difficulty of each question and the corresponding discrimination index. Our results indicate that as the degree of difficulty increases so does …

Ubiquitous Entropy And Heat Death In Philip K. Dick And Pamela Zoline, Krista. Kasdorf Jan 2006

Ubiquitous Entropy And Heat Death In Philip K. Dick And Pamela Zoline, Krista. Kasdorf

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

My scientifically informed readings of Philip K. Dick's Ubik (1969) and Pamela Zoline's "The Heat Death of the Universe" (1967) consider entropy's multifarious meanings from both thermodynamics and information theory. Additionally, rather than relying upon overarching assumptions about the texts' cultural moment, I explore each fiction's presentation of entropy as negative or positive. For Dick, the loss of female mothering accelerates the heat death of late-capitalistic society, with entropy a negative, destructive force. Zoline, however, recognizes the injurious ramifications of entrapping women within the gender role of self-sacrificing wife/mother; her protagonist purposefully accelerates entropy production to destroy such a closed …

Use Of Piezocone Penetration Tests For Rapid In-Situ Characterization Of Florida Organic Soil, Hieu H. Huynh Jan 2006

Use Of Piezocone Penetration Tests For Rapid In-Situ Characterization Of Florida Organic Soil, Hieu H. Huynh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Organic soils generally are characterized by low strength and high compressibility. Visual observations of State Road 15/US 98 in western Palm Beach County, Florida indicate numerous cracking and significant rutting and raveling along the roadway caused by the consolidation and long-term secondary compression of the organic soils due to soil and pavement dead load. Since sampling of undisturbed soft organic soils is difficult, and subsequent laboratory tests are expensive and time-consuming, there is a need for rapid in-situ characterization of these unstable foundation soils. This study evaluates the capabilities of Piezocone Penetration tests (CPTu), coupled with pore pressure dissipation tests, …

Conceptual Model Of The Emergence Of Shared Leadership: The Effects Of Organizational Structure, Culture, And Context Variables On Public Employee Perceptions Of Leadership, Sanghan Choi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This study rejects the hierarchical perspective of traditional leadership approaches in public administration. The hierarchical perspective tends to treat public managers at the top as leaders, public employees at the bottom as followers, and leadership as management. This study proposes shared leadership as an alternative to traditional leadership approaches. In theory, shared leadership is not about a hierarchical position but about a mutually shared process that occurs throughout public organizations. The literature has made assertions that shared leadership emerges from horizontal organizations, adaptable cultures, and turbulent environments. However, little research has been conducted to test the effects of these organizational …

Differential Expression Of Cardiac Troponin T Isoforms In Normal And Cardiac Non-Function Mutant Axolotl Hearts, Gian Franco Sferrazza Jan 2006

Differential Expression Of Cardiac Troponin T Isoforms In Normal And Cardiac Non-Function Mutant Axolotl Hearts, Gian Franco Sferrazza

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

A recessive mutant gene, termed "c", for cardiac non-function in the Mexican axolotl, Ambystoma mexicanum, is responsible for the failure of myofibrillogenesis in cardiac nonfunction mutant embryonic hearts. Animals that are homozygous for the mutation (c/c) fail to develop beating hearts and consequently die. Thus, the Mexican axolotl has been a useful animal model to study embryonic heart development. Recently, the cardiac troponin T (cTnT) gene, along with three additional shorter isoforms of the gene, were cloned from normal embryonic hearts. These isoforms are believed to be the alternately spliced forms of the full length gene. One of the isoforms …
