Calorie Restriction Enhances Longevity Without Reducing Lifetime Fecundity Or Glucose Titers In Female Lubber Grasshoppers, Sean M. Wells, Iris Cynthia Allen, Erin Fuller, Stephen Melnyk, John Quattrochi Jan 2006

Calorie Restriction Enhances Longevity Without Reducing Lifetime Fecundity Or Glucose Titers In Female Lubber Grasshoppers, Sean M. Wells, Iris Cynthia Allen, Erin Fuller, Stephen Melnyk, John Quattrochi

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Calorie restriction, under eating while avoiding malnutrition, enhances longevity in many organisms, in part by delaying fecundity or lowering blood glucose. Calorie restriction begun at middle-age can also enhance longevity. We tested four diets on longevity of female lubber grasshoppers: ad libitum (free access to food), calorie restriction (60% or 71% of ad libitum), and delayed calorie restriction (60% after day 50). Constant calorie restriction increased longevity in grasshoppers by at least 66%. These diets lowered body mass, but it did not reduce lifetime fecundity or chronically lower blood glucose levels. Calorie restriction reduced the levels of stored protein after …

Judicial Ethics, The Appearance Of Impropriety, And The Proposed New Aba Judicial Code, Ronald D. Rotunda Jan 2006

Judicial Ethics, The Appearance Of Impropriety, And The Proposed New Aba Judicial Code, Ronald D. Rotunda

Hofstra Law Review

We sometimes think, loosely, that ethics is good and that therefore more is better than less. But more is not better than less, if the more exacts higher costs, measured in terms of vague rules that impose unnecessary and excessive burdens. Overly-vague ethics rules impose costs on the judicial system and the litigants, which we should weigh when determining whether to impose ill-defined and indefinite ethics prohibitions on judges. Unnecessarily imprecise ethics rules allow and tempt critics, with minimum effort, to levy a plausible and serious charge that the judge has violated the ethics rules. Overuse not only invites abuse …

Conformance Testing Of Epon Devices, Eric Lynskey Jan 2006

Conformance Testing Of Epon Devices, Eric Lynskey

Master's Theses and Capstones

In June of 2004, the IEEE Standards Association approved IEEE 802.3ah-2004, which defined Ethernet for subscriber access networks, or Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM). Part of this standard contained a new type of Ethernet technology, that of Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPON). EPON devices have introduced new and challenging requirements for both conformance and interoperability testing. This thesis lays the foundation, to be used by the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL), for comprehensive conformance testing of EPON devices. A series of recommendations are put forth that allow for the creation and implementation of EPON test suites and …

A Cad Tool For Analog And Mixed Signal Cmos Circuits, Prasan Kasturi Jan 2006

A Cad Tool For Analog And Mixed Signal Cmos Circuits, Prasan Kasturi

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation address the issues of design automation of analog and mixed signal CMOS circuits. An interactive platform has been created for the design of CMOS circuits. The user interactive design platform generates device sizes and operating points from a given set of specifications and provides an easy to use interface in-order to tune the performance of the circuit for a given application. A novel combination of a knowledge-based circuit parameter estimation and a simulation driven design flow is used for the design of these circuits. The tool also provides a variety of outputs including a Spice netlist, plots for …

Experimental And Analytical Investigation Of Inertial Propulsion Mechanisms And Motion Simulation Of Rigid-Multi-Body Mechanical Systems, Mohammed Almesallmy Jan 2006

Experimental And Analytical Investigation Of Inertial Propulsion Mechanisms And Motion Simulation Of Rigid-Multi-Body Mechanical Systems, Mohammed Almesallmy

Open Access Dissertations

Methodologies are developed for dynamic analysis of mechanical systems with emphasis on inertial propulsion systems. This work adopted the Lagrangian methodology. Lagrangian methodology is the most efficient classical computational technique, which we call Equations of Motion Code (EOMC). The EOMC is applied to several simple dynamic mechanical systems for easier understanding of the method and to aid other investigators in developing equations of motion of any dynamic system. In addition, it is applied to a rigid multibody system, such as Thomson IPS [Thomson 1986]. Furthermore, a simple symbolic algorithm is developed using Maple software, which can be used to convert …
