Resource Manual For Rural Occupational Therapy Practitioners, Janae Marie. Hughes Jan 2006

Resource Manual For Rural Occupational Therapy Practitioners, Janae Marie. Hughes

Occupational Therapy Capstones

Rural hospitals have been an integral part of the culture of rural America, where clients were once able to seek services needed in their hometowns. Now more than ever, rural facilities are facing increased challenges to remain viable and at the same time continue to deliver high quality care to their communities (American Hospital Association, 2005). With small towns becoming smaller, it is becoming increasingly difficult to recruit allied health professionals to these areas. The reasons for this vary from area to area yet there are some commonalities such as; the misperceptions of limited community activities and resources, lower pay …

Interrelationships Among Language Skills, Externalizing Behavior, And Academic Fluency And Their Impact On The Academic Skills Of Students With Ed, J. Ron Nelson, Gregory J. Benner, Stern Neill, Scott A. Stage

Marketing

There is growing interest in understanding the factors that influence the academic achievement of students with emotional disturbance (ED). Structural equation modeling was used to test the interrelationships among language skills, externalizing behavior, and academic fluency and their impact on the academic skills of students with ED. Results showed that language skills exerted a significant proximal effect and distal effect on academic skills. The effect of language skills was mediated through academic fluency (path coefficient = .389) but also had a proximal effect on academic skills (path coefficient = .359). However, externalizing behavior failed to have a statistically significant effect on …

Pro-Democratic Intervention In Africa, Jeremy I. Levitt Jan 2006

Pro-Democratic Intervention In Africa, Jeremy I. Levitt

Journal Publications

In the past twenty years the people of the African continent have experienced human suffering on a scale unparalleled in human history. For the past decade I have examined and documented the evolution of Africa's peacekeeping, peace enforcement, regional collective security, and conflict management landscape as well as Africa's contribution to international law, particularly as it relates to the jus ad bellum, "the law of the use of force". Although an abundance of scholarly work and official studies have examined the complexities of humanitarian intervention, only a select body of credible work has considered the phenomenon of pro-democratic intervention (PDI)--very …

Dawn Of A New Era In The Extraterritorial Application Of U.S. Environmental Statutes: A Proposal For An Integrated Judicial Standard Based On The Continuum Of Context, Randall S. Abate Jan 2006

Dawn Of A New Era In The Extraterritorial Application Of U.S. Environmental Statutes: A Proposal For An Integrated Judicial Standard Based On The Continuum Of Context, Randall S. Abate

Journal Publications

Congress has the authority to enact laws beyond the territorial boundaries of the United States. However, whether Congress intended to exercise extraterritorial authority in a given statute is a matter for the courts to ascertain through statutory interpretation. When considering the reach of federal legislation, courts are guided by a presumption against extraterritoriality. Part I of this Article discusses the origins and evolution of the presumption against extraterritoriality before and after the landmark decision in Aramco. Part II addresses the continuum of context paradigm from Massey and describes the extraterritorial application of U.S. environmental statutes. Part III of the Article …

Signaling Conformity: Changing Norms In Japan And China, David Nelken Jan 2006

Signaling Conformity: Changing Norms In Japan And China, David Nelken

Michigan Journal of International Law

Whatever their differences, the articles in this issue also have much in common in addition to their regional focus. The author of this Comment shall discuss in turn three (related) theoretical issues that arise, to a greater or lesser degree, in all four contributions. The first Part of this Comment considers the insights of these articles on the need to move from discussing transplants to focusing on transnational legal processes. The second Part examines what the contributions tell us about culture, legal culture, and the so-called "norm of conformity." I shall concentrate in particular on the cultural sources of choices …

Examining The Cross-National Applicability Of Multi-Item, Multidimensional Measures Using Generalizability Theory, Srinivas Durvasula, Richard G. Netemeyer, J. Craig Andrews, Steven Lysonski Jan 2006

Examining The Cross-National Applicability Of Multi-Item, Multidimensional Measures Using Generalizability Theory, Srinivas Durvasula, Richard G. Netemeyer, J. Craig Andrews, Steven Lysonski

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

Establishing the applicability of multi-item measures is important for making valid inferences when testing theories cross-nationally. Typically, researchers have relied upon the tenets of classical measurement theory (CT) using confirmatory factor model invariance testing to conclude that a unidimensional measure is applicable across countries. However, two important issues remain unresolved via CT techniques: (1) if the measure is found not to be invariant, CT tells us little as to why the measure varies across countries; and (2) if the measure is multi-dimensional, what factors affect its cross-national applicability? Our research seeks to address these issues and the cross-national measurement applicability …

Development And Validation Of A Scale Measuring Parental Perceptions Of The Special Education Process, Kimberly M. Hill Jan 2006

Development And Validation Of A Scale Measuring Parental Perceptions Of The Special Education Process, Kimberly M. Hill

Open Access Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to develop and assess the psychometric properties of a scale measuring the perceptions parents had of the special education process. Before being distributed to the study sample, the Parent's Perceptions of Special Education Scale (PPSES) was reviewed by parent leaders from the Rhode Island Parent Information Network and students enrolled in a school psychology graduate program to judge the scale items for clarity and relevance. Surveys containing a personal background sheet, the PPSES, the Family-Partnership Scale, and the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale were distributed to parents of children in special education at five sites …

Discovery Of A Dicephalic Western Diamondback Rattlesnake, Crotalus Atrox (Serpentes: Viperidae), From Texas, With A Summary Of Dicephalism Among Members Of The Genus Crotalus, Chris T. Mcallister, Van Wallach

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

We document the fourth record of a dicephalic western diamondback rattlesnake, Crotalus atrox, collected on 17 September 2005 in Tom Green County, Texas, along with features of its external and internal anatomy, which are compared with normal C. atrox neonates. This is only the second reported case of complete anatomical duplication of the respiratory system and nearly complete duplication of the circulatory and digestive systems in dicephalic snakes. In addition, we present a summary of dicephalism among 10 species within the genus Crotalus.

Evaluation Of Cross Pollination Of Zephyranthes And Habranthus Species And Hybrids, Moytri Roy Chowdhury, John Hubstenberger Jan 2006

Evaluation Of Cross Pollination Of Zephyranthes And Habranthus Species And Hybrids, Moytri Roy Chowdhury, John Hubstenberger

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The genus Zephyranthes and the related genus Habranthus in the family Amaryllidaceae are commonly grown ornamental bulbs having new world homologies. Inter-specific and inter-generic hybridizations are complicated by the fact that some of the species are apomictic, cross incompatible, or have widely variable 2n chromosome numbers. A simple, inexpensive method of pollen storage was tested to evaluate the production of hybrid seed. Intact anthers harvested after pollen release and stored at 4°C were used for pollination. Emasculated flowers were pollinated at noon on the first or second day of anthesis. Hybrid crosses were labeled and seed collected when formed. All …

Perkin Reaction: Rapid And Efficient Process Optimization Through A Microwave/Design Of Experiments Couple, R. David Pace, Laura Mcwilliams Jan 2006

Perkin Reaction: Rapid And Efficient Process Optimization Through A Microwave/Design Of Experiments Couple, R. David Pace, Laura Mcwilliams

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Microwave chemistry and a Design of Experiments (DOE) protocol were employed together in order to rapidly and efficiently optimize a modified Perkin reaction. Microwave heating significantly reduced the reaction time, and the DOE provided a statistically significant understanding of underlying process relationships in a minimum number of experimental runs. In all, the reaction time was reduced from1hour to 2 minutes, factors important to yield were identified, an interesting cross-term interaction was discovered, and it was demonstrated that the more economical sodium acetate trihydrate catalyst was a viable alternative to the more costly anhydrous sodium acetate.

Media Coverage Of The Civil War In El Salvador, Ebone S. Colbert Jan 2006

Media Coverage Of The Civil War In El Salvador, Ebone S. Colbert

McNair Scholars Journal

The United Nation’s Truth Commission Report documented the 1980-1992 Civil War in El Salvador. During the Civil War the Salvadoran government’s repression was connected to the 1989 murder of six Jesuit priests. This analysis focuses on newspaper and television coverage of this event in the United States media. I used the Truth Commission Report as my historical source and compared it to media reports in the United States. I also used a 1989 Radio Venceremos radio broadcast as a source of information. Interviews were conducted in 2006 with Salvadorans to explore their perception of the 1989 media coverage of the …

Presidential Rhetoric: How John Adams And George W. Bush Used Religion To Effectively Communicate With Their Respective Constituency, Beth Fisher Jan 2006

Presidential Rhetoric: How John Adams And George W. Bush Used Religion To Effectively Communicate With Their Respective Constituency, Beth Fisher

McNair Scholars Journal

President George W. Bush’s affiliation with the conservative and political Christian right helped him win the presidential elections of 2000 and 2004. During the past six years, Bush has courted this vast voting public by referencing Christian doctrine in his speeches. John Adams, this nation’s second president, was of Puritan ancestry. Yet Adams, an eloquent writer, carefully crafted his communiqués to avoid overt religiosity. An analysis of the public communications of these two presidents will show how allusions to Christianity have been used as a rhetorical and political tool to facilitate national unity for their agendas

Nookaler Ambitions: A Social-Psychological Analysis Of Persuasive Speech, Eric Gladstone Jan 2006

Nookaler Ambitions: A Social-Psychological Analysis Of Persuasive Speech, Eric Gladstone

McNair Scholars Journal

This study proposes a general model of persuasion based in social-psychology and cognitive information processing theory and is composed of an ideal listener/speaker/environment interaction. Drawing upon research conducted by Lowenthal and Guterman (1950), Erich Hoffer (1952), and Prakanis and Aranson (1992), the model is oriented towards post-911 presidential communications for testing. Presidential rhetoric is organized into seventeen themes, and these themes are analyzed so as to determine what effect, if any, said persuasive trends have on the individual listener. Insight into the characteristics and effects of persuasive communiqués is essential to the development of rational, critical psyches within persuasively-dense environments.

Epitope Labeling Of Histidine Decarboxylase In Drosophila Melanogaster, Stephanie A. N. Payne Jan 2006

Epitope Labeling Of Histidine Decarboxylase In Drosophila Melanogaster, Stephanie A. N. Payne

McNair Scholars Journal

Histidine decarboxylase (HDC) plays a critical role in the synthesis of histamine, a central nervous system neurotransmitter used by both vertebrates and invertebrates. Past attempts to create antisera that recognize the HDC protein in vivo have not produced satisfactory antisera. While HDC antiserum has been made in other organisms, they appear not to be useful across species, including Drosophila melanogaster. As a result, little is known about the localization as well as the biochemistry of HDC in the fly. It has been suggested that HDC undergoes a complex maturation process, including cleavage of the polypeptide at both the N- and …

Faculty Attitudes Toward International Education: A Campus Experience, Susan Carley, Sutham Cheurprakobkit, Daniel Paracka Jan 2006

Faculty Attitudes Toward International Education: A Campus Experience, Susan Carley, Sutham Cheurprakobkit, Daniel Paracka

Faculty Articles

Because of the important role of the faculty in the areas of teaching, scholarship, and curriculum development, a crucial component in internationalizing the campus is the internationalization of the faculty itself. Despite the important role played by faculty, little is known about their current support for and interest in internationalization, and available information is largely qualitative and anecdotal. To learn more about faculty views, the authors conducted an empirical study on faculty attitudes about international learning, perceptions of institutional support, perceived benefits of international learning, and the impact of demographic factors and prior international experience on faculty perceptions. Policy implications …

Automated Adaptation Between Kiranti Languages, Daniel Richard Mccloy Jan 2006

Automated Adaptation Between Kiranti Languages, Daniel Richard Mccloy

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

McCloy, Daniel, M.A., December 2006 Linguistics Automated Adaptation Between Kiranti Languages Chairperson: Dr. Anthony Mattina Minority language communities that are seeking to develop their language may be hampered by a lack of vernacular materials. Large volumes of such materials may be available in a related language. Automated adaptation holds potential to enable these large volumes of materials to be efficiently translated into the resource-scarce language. I describe a project to assess the feasibility of automatically adapting text between Limbu and Yamphu, two languages in Nepal’s Kiranti grouping. The approaches taken—essentially a transfer-based system partially hybridized with a Kiranti-specific interlingua—are placed …
