Henry James’S "The Ambassadors": Anatomy Of Silence, Marie Leone Meyer Jan 2006

Henry James’S "The Ambassadors": Anatomy Of Silence, Marie Leone Meyer

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation examines the use of silence in Henry James's novel The Ambassadors. James uses silence rich in meaning to portray the protagonist Lewis Lambert Strether's unfolding consciousness. James creates different types of silences that reflect a shift from the spoken or written word to alternate symbol systems. James's novel perches on the threshold of modernity, as his work reflects the ideas of a line of thinkers extending back from James and his brother, William, to Ralph Waldo Emerson, Sampson Reed, and Emanuel Swedenborg. At the same time, the novel draws on the contemporary ideas of Charles Darwin, prefigures …

Putting The Pieces Together: The Mystery Surrounding An Attic Pyxis From The University Of Mississippi Robinson Collection, Heather Ryanne Carrillo Jan 2006

Putting The Pieces Together: The Mystery Surrounding An Attic Pyxis From The University Of Mississippi Robinson Collection, Heather Ryanne Carrillo

Honors Theses

The study of Greek painted pottery has the ability to explain many mysteries surrounding ancient Athens. The University of Mississippi is home to a large collection of these archaeological jewels, many of which have not been thoroughly studied. An Attic white ground pyxis is one unpublished vessel, which before now, has never been carefully examined. The purpose of this study was to examine all aspects of this piece, which include the shape, artists, and iconography. Such attributes were studied through the analysis of ancient texts, previous scholarship on shape and iconography, and a close comparison of two artists’ hands. A …

The Effect Of Carrageenan-Induced Inflammatory Nociception On Distress Vocalizations And The Anxiolytic Efficacy Of Drugs In The Chick Separation Stress Paradigm, Ralph Brooks Vance Jr.

Honors Theses

RALPH BROOKS VANCE, JR: The Effect of Carrageenan-Induced Inflammatory Nociception on Distress Vocalizations and the Anxiolytic Efficacy ofDrugs in the Chick Separation Stress Paradigm. (Under the direction ofKenneth J. Sufka)

The effects ofstress on pain perception have been well studied, but only limited research has been conducted on the opposite relationship, the effect ofpain on stress level. Femandez-Guasti (2005) found that nociception caused by uric acid injections, attenuated the anxiety-like behavior ofrats in both the elevated plus maze and in the burying behavior test. Additionally, they discovered that the anxiolytic effectiveness of buspirone and diazepam were weakened by the mild …

Cytosolic Phospholipases A2 (Cpla2: Izoenzyme Expression And Regulation In A Human Breast Cancer Cell Model., Maricica Pacurari

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Breast cancer remains one of the most widespread cancers among women worldwide. Despite the existing evidence that implicates arachidonic acid (AA) metabolites, collectively called eicosanoids, in cancer onset and progression, little attention has been given to the enzymes, the cytosolic PLA2 (cPLA2), that usually provide free AA for eicosanoid biosynthesis. The present studies were undertaken to study the expression and regulation of the cPLA2-α, -β, -γ isoenzymes at the mRNA and protein levels, and of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and platelet 12-Lipoxygenase (12-LO) at mRNA level, the AA utilizing enzymes in MCF-7 cells. The present study shows that in MCF-7 cells the …

Greed And Pride In International Bankruptcy: The Problems Of And Proposed Solutions To "Local Interests", John A. E. Pottow Jan 2006

Greed And Pride In International Bankruptcy: The Problems Of And Proposed Solutions To "Local Interests", John A. E. Pottow

Michigan Law Review

The collapses of Yukos, Parmalat, and other international juggernauts have focused scholarly attention on the failure of multinational enterprises. Even what one might consider "American" companies, such as Chicagobased United Airlines, have made clear in their restructuring plans that their operations have profound effects on the dozens of nations around the globe where they transact business. Government and quasi-government reform efforts to regulate these cross-border insolvencies have abounded, including among others, the UNCITRAL Model Law on Cross-Border Insolvency. UNCITRAL is also building on World Bank and INSOL efforts at promulgating a Legislative Guide for "best practices" bankruptcy codes.

Problems With Minimalism, Cass R. Sunstein Jan 2006

Problems With Minimalism, Cass R. Sunstein

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Much of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor's work on the Supreme Court embodies a commitment to judicial minimalism, understood as a preference for narrow rulings, closely attuned to particular facts. This preference reflects a belief that at least in adjudication, standards ought to be preferred to rules. In many contexts, however, that belief is hard to justify, simply because it imposes severe decision-making burdens on others and may well create more, rather than fewer, errors. For this reason, a general preference for minimalism is no more defensible than a general preference for rules. The choice between narrow and wide rulings cannot …

Identifying Spatial Clusters Within United States Organic Agriculture., Daniel C. Eades Jan 2006

Identifying Spatial Clusters Within United States Organic Agriculture., Daniel C. Eades

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Although the organic market has experienced rapid growth in recent decades, growth in production has not been distributed evenly across the country, instead concentrating in certain regions. Employing measures of spatial concentration and association, we identify those counties in which organic production is clustered or represents a proportion of the agricultural economy greater than would be expected by national trends. Results show that spatial clustering of organic agriculture does exist. Large location quotients for organic production were most often found for the western U.S., the Great Plains states, and New England. Clusters measured by the local Moran’s I statistic followed …

The Color Of Sexual Harassment And The Public/Private Divide, Janeille Zorina Matthews Jan 2006

The Color Of Sexual Harassment And The Public/Private Divide, Janeille Zorina Matthews

UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice

This article argues that the conception of sexual harassment as simply a gendered harm is inadequate because sexual harassment is not only about gender but also about race, class, sexual orientation and other realities of existence. Sexual harassment is about power and about keeping particular women out of particular economic spheres. Using the Commonwealth Caribbean as an example, this article concludes that an intersectional understanding of sexual harassment, and a more nuanced understanding of the public/private divide, will lead to better workplace harassment legislation. While much of the focus is on the Commonwealth Caribbean, a North American example suggests that …

Fda, Clia, Or A "Reasonable Combination Of Both": Toward Increased Regulatory Oversight Of Genetic Testing, Douglas A. Grimm

University of San Francisco Law Review

This Article examines the current regulatory scheme for genetic testing and calls for a unification of the testing standards. It advocates consolidating the standards under a single governmental agency, FDA, in order to ameliorate the potential for immediate and future harm to patients and their families. In order to be effective, future regulations must apply to all providers of genetic testing and create meaningful, reasonable criteria for testing processes and outcomes.

Process Theory And Emerging Thirteenth Amendment Jurisprudence:The Case Of Agricultural Guestworkers, Benjamin P. Quest Jan 2006

Process Theory And Emerging Thirteenth Amendment Jurisprudence:The Case Of Agricultural Guestworkers, Benjamin P. Quest

University of San Francisco Law Review

This Comment argues that applying process theory as a limiting principle to an expansive substantive interpretation of the Thirteenth Amendment and uses United States agricultural guestworker policy as a case study. Viewed through a process theory lens, the Thirteenth Amendment compels Congress to revise guestworker statutes since guestworkers are unable to take advantage of democratic channels to combat employment practices that replicate slavery-like harms.

From Orthodoxy To Heresy: A Theological Analysis Of Sonnets Xiv And Xviii, Timothy J. Burbery Jan 2006

From Orthodoxy To Heresy: A Theological Analysis Of Sonnets Xiv And Xviii, Timothy J. Burbery

English Faculty Research

The commentary on Milton's eighteenth sonnet ("On the Late Massacre' in Piedmont") is rich and extensive. Kester Svendsen's often cited 1945 essay, the first close reading of the poem; ushered in many other interpretations of its biblical imagery, as well as speech-act analyses, reader- response discussions, and at least one Foucaldian study. Yet even though a religious conflict inspired the sonnet, and although numerous interpreters have paid close attention to the work's biblical texture, no sustained theological account of the poem has been offered. The present essay seeks to fill that gap by examining the work in light of two …

Out Of Thin Air: Using First Amendment Public Forum Analysis To Redeem American Broadcasting Regulation, Anthony E. Varona

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

American television and radio broadcasters are uniquely privileged among Federal Communications Commission (FCC) licensees. Exalted as public trustees by the 1934 Communications Act, broadcasters pay virtually nothing for the use of their channels of public radiofrequency spectrum, unlike many other FCC licensees who have paid billions of dollars for similar digital spectrum. Congress envisioned a social contract of sorts between broadcast licensees and the communities they served. In exchange for their free licenses, broadcast stations were charged with providing a platform for a free marketplace of ideas that would cultivate a democratically engaged and enlightened citizenry through the broadcasting of …

Postharvest Treatment To Control Codling Moth In Fresh Apples Using Water Assisted Radio Frequency Heating, Shaojin Wang, Sohan Birla, J. D. Hansen Jan 2006

Postharvest Treatment To Control Codling Moth In Fresh Apples Using Water Assisted Radio Frequency Heating, Shaojin Wang, Sohan Birla, J. D. Hansen

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Apples destined for export to Japan and South Korea are currently disinfested for codling moth, Cydia pomonella L. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), using methyl bromide fumigation. Restrictions and limitations imposed on the uses of methyl bromide have increased interest in developing alternative non-chemical quarantine treatments. It is imperative that the treatment is effective against codling moth yet maintains the quality of treated apples. The present study explored the application of radio frequency (RF) energy in conjunction with conventional hot water treatment to develop feasible heat treatments. Treatment parameters were selected based on minimum time–temperature conditions required for 100% mortality of fifth-instar codling …
