Children’S Social Behaviors And Peer Interactions In Diverse Cultures, Carolyn P. Edwards, Maria Deguzman, Jill Brown, Asiye Kumru Jan 2006

Children’S Social Behaviors And Peer Interactions In Diverse Cultures, Carolyn P. Edwards, Maria Deguzman, Jill Brown, Asiye Kumru

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This chapter lays out five principles to guide research on peer relationships in cultural context that reflect both current and earlier bodies of research literature: (1) Cultural scripts for socialization in peer relationships are evident in early childhood. (2) Both across and within cultural communities, children’s own active role in the socialization process becomes increasingly evident as they grow older. (3) Because children are active agents in their own socialization, they can not only make choices, they can also negotiate, deflect, and resist socializing attempts by others. (4) Children’s choices and preferences (self-socialization) during middle childhood have measurable and lasting …

The Third Moment In Law And Development Theory And The Emergence Of A New Critical Practice, David M. Trubek, Alvaro Santos Jan 2006

The Third Moment In Law And Development Theory And The Emergence Of A New Critical Practice, David M. Trubek, Alvaro Santos

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The study of the relationship between law and economic development goes back at least to the nineteenth century. It is a question that attracted the attention of classical thinkers like Marx and Weber. And there were some early efforts to craft policy in this area; for example, under the Raj, some English Utilitarians tried to put Jeremy Bentham’s ideas about law and economic progress into practice in India. But it was only after World War II that systematic and organized efforts to reform legal systems became part of the practice of international development agencies.

Initially, development agencies turned to law …

Risky Business, Milton C. Regan Jan 2006

Risky Business, Milton C. Regan

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This article is part of an exchange including Anthony Alfieri and William Simon in the Georgetown Law Journal on the implications of law firms' increasing reliance on the concept of risk management as the focus of efforts to ensure ethical conduct by lawyers. A risk management program involves the adoption of various policies and procedures designed to minimize conduct that may lead to individual and firm liability. Conflicts checking procedures, standard terms in engagement letters, and the requirement of a second signature by a disinterested partner on legal opinions are but a few of such measures. On one hand, the …

Anti-Terrorist Finance In The United Kingdom And United States, Laura K. Donohue Jan 2006

Anti-Terrorist Finance In The United Kingdom And United States, Laura K. Donohue

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This article adopts a two-tiered approach: it provides a detailed, historical account of anti-terrorist finance initiatives in the United Kingdom and United States—two states driving global norms in this area. It then proceeds to a critique of these laws. The analysis assumes—and accepts—the goals of the two states in adopting these provisions. It questions how well the measures achieve their aim. Specifically, it highlights how the transfer of money laundering tools undermines the effectiveness of the states' counterterrorist efforts—flooding the systems with suspicious activity reports, driving money out of the regulated sector, and using inappropriate metrics to gauge success. This …

Democracy, Race, And Multiculturalism In The Twenty-First Century: Will The Voting Rights Act Ever Be Obsolete?, Sheryll Cashin Jan 2006

Democracy, Race, And Multiculturalism In The Twenty-First Century: Will The Voting Rights Act Ever Be Obsolete?, Sheryll Cashin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Part I of this essay begins one hundred years before the passage of the Act, with Reconstruction. I briefly canvas the interracial alliances of the Reconstruction and Redemption periods, underscoring that American democracy has been most responsive to the masses, including working class whites, when interracial alliances between whites and blacks commanded majority power. I then recount how a politics of white supremacy animated and perpetuated racial schisms between blacks and whites for a century in the South. Part II describes how the Act came to be passed, emphasizing the role of protest and coalition politics in its enactment, and …

Characterizing The Resident, Fermentative Microbial Consortium In The Hindgut Of The Temperate-Zone Herbivorous Fish, Hermosilla Azurea (Teleostei: Kyphosidae), Pat M. Fidopiastis, Daniel J. Bezdek, Michael H. Horn, Judith S. Kandel

Biological Sciences

The zebraperch, Hermosilla azurea Jenkins and Evermann, a warm-temperate marine fish species with a strictly macroalgal diet, has a relatively long digestive tract with an enlarged hindgut and an associated blind caecum (HC). In zebraperch sampled off Santa Catalina Island, California (33°19′42′′N; 118°18′37′′W) in years 1995 through 2001, direct cell counts, gut epithelium assessment of bacterial attachment, and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) analyses verified that the zebraperch HC possesses a dense and morphologically diverse, fermentative microbiota. Bacterial cell counts and morphological diversity were significantly higher in HC contents compared to anterior gut regions, suggesting that microbial populations were growing along …

U.S. Counterterrorism Policy And Superpower Compliance With International Human Rights Norms, Kenneth Anderson Jan 2006

U.S. Counterterrorism Policy And Superpower Compliance With International Human Rights Norms, Kenneth Anderson

Fordham International Law Journal

Our specific topic is Guantanamo, but in my brief remarks I would like to take the long view of U.S. counterterrorism policy (including Guantanamo) and link it to the question of the compliance of the United States, as today's superpower, with international human rights norms, its relationship to the United Nations and, speaking very broadly, international law norms as conceived by the international community. This is partly a question of the relationship of U.S. counterterrorism policy to international law. But it is also a question of the relationship of the superpower to the rest of the international community, and in …

A New Tort Code Emerges In China: An Introduction To The Discussion With A Translation Of Chapter 8- Tort Liability, Of The Official Discussion Draft Of The Proposed Revised Civil Code Of The People's Republic Of China, George W. Conk

Fordham International Law Journal

In 1986, the Sixth National People's Congress enacted the General Principles of Civil Law of the People Republic of China ("1986Code). The 1986 Code is now undergoing comprehensive revision. The Standing Committee of the National Peoples Congress (the national legislature) issued a comprehensive draft revised civil code for discussion on December 17, 2002 "Standing Committee Discussion Draft". Discussion in China of the 2002 Standing Committee Discussion Draft has recently centered on the chapter on property rights. Passed on March 16, 2007, after seven drafts, the property rights chapter has been the source, one can readily understand, of much more controversy …

Unclos And The Arctic: The Path Of Least Resistance, Mark Jarashow, Michael B. Runnels, Tait Svenson

Fordham International Law Journal

This Note discusses the territorial disputes in the Arctic, which are becoming increasingly contentious as a result of the Arctic melt, and the potential resolutions through the mechanisms of international law. Part I discusses the scientific consensus regarding the changing Arctic climate and the resulting conflicts that arise from increased interests in the region. Part II evaluates the varying legal paradigms that may be utilized in order to navigate through the competing claims. Part III argues that, given the uncertainties surrounding both the outcome of any potential International Court of Justice ("ICJ") decision and entering into an Arctic Treaty, universal …

Phosphatidylinositol 3-Kinase/Akt Signaling Pathway And Angiogenesis, Zongxian Cao Jan 2006

Phosphatidylinositol 3-Kinase/Akt Signaling Pathway And Angiogenesis, Zongxian Cao

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels from preexisting ones, is tightly controlled under physiological conditions, and deregulated angiogenesis contributes to many pathological situations. This study investigates the role of PI3K/Akt pathway in both physiological and pathological angiogenesis. Angiopoietin-1 (Ang1) is an endothelial specific growth factor that plays a critical role in vessel maturation and stabilization during angiogenesis. We found that Ang1 potently induced p70S6K1 activation in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). p70S6K1 is a downstream target of PI3K, but its role in angiogenesis has not be defined. In the work shown in Chapter 2, p70S6K1 activity in HUVECs …

Investigation Of Techniques And Effects Of Diesel Particulate Filter Cleaning, Nathaniel Moles Jan 2006

Investigation Of Techniques And Effects Of Diesel Particulate Filter Cleaning, Nathaniel Moles

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

As the emissions standards placed on diesel engine exhaust become more stringent, the use of exhaust aftertreatment devices such as diesel particulate filters has become a more attractive means to meet those standards. During the use of these filters some of the particulate captured, usually ash, begins to restrict the flow through the filter. This increases the backpressure in the exhaust system and requires routine cleaning maintenance. This study reviewed engine technology used to reduce particulate emissions and investigated the effects of off-line cleaning of diesel particulate filters using compressed air and water flowing in the reverse direction of the …

Maze Learning And Recall In Weakly Electric Fish, Mormyrus Rume Proboscirostris Boulenger 1898 (Teleostei, Mormyridae): Sensory Bases, Alice G. Walton Jan 2006

Maze Learning And Recall In Weakly Electric Fish, Mormyrus Rume Proboscirostris Boulenger 1898 (Teleostei, Mormyridae): Sensory Bases, Alice G. Walton

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Animals use navigational strategies ranging from taxes, landmark and compass orientation, and path integration to cognitive maps. The debate concerning the use of mapping strategies, or less complex mechanisms such path integration, landmark orientation, or dead reckoning is far from settled. Nocturnal weakly electric fish (family Mormyridae) leave their daytime hiding places at night to forage for food and return at dawn. Thus, these fish provide an excellent model to explore their navigational strategies.

The present studies explore these strategies using a novel paradigm: after learning to swim through a maze (acquisition), the maze barriers are removed and the fish …

Henry James’S "The Ambassadors": Anatomy Of Silence, Marie Leone Meyer Jan 2006

Henry James’S "The Ambassadors": Anatomy Of Silence, Marie Leone Meyer

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation examines the use of silence in Henry James's novel The Ambassadors. James uses silence rich in meaning to portray the protagonist Lewis Lambert Strether's unfolding consciousness. James creates different types of silences that reflect a shift from the spoken or written word to alternate symbol systems. James's novel perches on the threshold of modernity, as his work reflects the ideas of a line of thinkers extending back from James and his brother, William, to Ralph Waldo Emerson, Sampson Reed, and Emanuel Swedenborg. At the same time, the novel draws on the contemporary ideas of Charles Darwin, prefigures …

Putting The Pieces Together: The Mystery Surrounding An Attic Pyxis From The University Of Mississippi Robinson Collection, Heather Ryanne Carrillo Jan 2006

Putting The Pieces Together: The Mystery Surrounding An Attic Pyxis From The University Of Mississippi Robinson Collection, Heather Ryanne Carrillo

Honors Theses

The study of Greek painted pottery has the ability to explain many mysteries surrounding ancient Athens. The University of Mississippi is home to a large collection of these archaeological jewels, many of which have not been thoroughly studied. An Attic white ground pyxis is one unpublished vessel, which before now, has never been carefully examined. The purpose of this study was to examine all aspects of this piece, which include the shape, artists, and iconography. Such attributes were studied through the analysis of ancient texts, previous scholarship on shape and iconography, and a close comparison of two artists’ hands. A …

Media & Literature: American Cinema And C.S. Lewis's The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe, Laura B. Rigby

Honors Theses

This thesis analyzes the characters and Christian spiritual themes in C. S. Lewis’s work The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and examines the disparity between Lewis’s original work and the 2005 Walt Disney Productions film adaptation of the text. Through the examination of the differences between the two works, this study assesses the degree of theme shift and provides possible explanations for the changes.

Etruscan Fiesole, Kathryn Virginia Cannada Jan 2006

Etruscan Fiesole, Kathryn Virginia Cannada

Honors Theses

This paper is an examination of the Etruscan people and their inhabitation of the of Fiesole, outside of Florence, Italy. After living in Florence, Italy during 2004 and 2005,1 became interested in the beginnings of the area. Learning that Fiesole was conversations town populated earlier than Florence, I began researching about Fiesole. From with local archaeologists and from examining the visible, ancient remnants of Fiesole in the Archaeology Museum of Fiesole and in the town itself, my interest and knowledge about this interesting area grew. When 1 began to read about Fiesole, 1 discovered that little material has been written …
