Grazing Management Effects On Sediment And Phosphorus In Surface Runoff, Matthew M. Haan, James R. Russell, Wendy J. Powers, John L. Kovar, Jamie L. Benning Nov 2006

Grazing Management Effects On Sediment And Phosphorus In Surface Runoff, Matthew M. Haan, James R. Russell, Wendy J. Powers, John L. Kovar, Jamie L. Benning

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Sediment and phosphorus (P) in runoff from pastures are potential non–point-source pollutants in surface waters that may be influenced by surface cover, sward height, treading damage, surface slope, soil moisture, and soil P. The objectives of the current study were to quantify sediment and total P loads in runoff produced during simulated rainfall from pastures and to evaluate their relationships with the physical and chemical characteristics of the soil and sward. Five forage management treatments— ungrazed (U), hay harvest/fall stockpile grazing (HS), continuous stocking to a sward height of 5 cm (5C), and rotational stocking to sward heights of 5 …

Convergence Of Agriculture And Energy: Implications For Research And Policy, Kenneth Cassman, Vernon Eidman, Eugene Simpson, Larry Berger, Robert Loomis, Marie Walsh, Todd A. Peterson, Edward Runge

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Access to an adequate energy supply at reasonable cost is crucial for sustained economic growth. Unfortunately, oil prices and the need to import from politically unstable countries lowers the reliability of the U.S. energy supply and hinders economic development. Although biofuels have been identified as an important component of the national strategy to decrease U.S. dependence on imported oil, the ability to sustain a rapid expansion of biofuel production capacity raises new research and policy issues. This document seeks to identify the most critical of these issues to help inform the policy development process. The goal is to enhance the …

Laboratory Environment Effects On The Reproduction And Mortality Of Adult Screwworm (Diptera: Calliphoridae), Dennis Berkebile, Agustin Sagel, Steven R. Skoda, John E. Foster Nov 2006

Laboratory Environment Effects On The Reproduction And Mortality Of Adult Screwworm (Diptera: Calliphoridae), Dennis Berkebile, Agustin Sagel, Steven R. Skoda, John E. Foster

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The New World screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax Coquerel, is mass reared for screwworm eradication initiatives that use the sterile insect technique. New methods for rearing have helped to reduce the cost of the eradication program. We examined the effect and interaction of three temperatures (24.5, 29.5 and 34.5ºC), two diets (2% spray-dried blood plus 0.05% vitamins and corn syrup carrageenan) and three population densities (300, 400, and 500 flies/cage) on egg production, egg hatch, number of observable fertilized eggs, mortality (male and female) and ovarian development. The three population densities did not affect any of the parameters monitored. Using the protein …

Linking Life Zones, Life History Traits, Ecology, And Spatial Cognition In Four Allopatric Southwestern Seed Caching Corvids, Russell P. Balda, Alan Kamil Nov 2006

Linking Life Zones, Life History Traits, Ecology, And Spatial Cognition In Four Allopatric Southwestern Seed Caching Corvids, Russell P. Balda, Alan Kamil

Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences

This report will review the similarities and differences of four species of pine seed caching members of the avian family Corvidae that live on the slopes and base of the San Francisco Peaks in north-central Arizona. The four species include the Clark’s nutcracker (Nucifraga columbiana), pinyon jay (Gymnorhinus cyanocephalus), western scrub-jay (Aphelocoma californica), and Mexican jay (A. ultramarina). These corvids demonstrate a specialization gradient for the harvesting, transporting, caching and recovering of buried pine seeds. This gradient is reflected in their dependence on cached pine seeds for winter and early spring survival …

Plant Reproductive Allocation Predicts Herbivore Dynamics Across Spatial And Temporal Scales, Tom E. X. Miller, Andrew J. Tyre, Svata M. Louda Nov 2006

Plant Reproductive Allocation Predicts Herbivore Dynamics Across Spatial And Temporal Scales, Tom E. X. Miller, Andrew J. Tyre, Svata M. Louda

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Life-history theory suggests that iteroparous plants should be flexible in their allocation of resources toward growth and reproduction. Such plasticity could have consequences for herbivores that prefer or specialize on vegetative versus reproductive structures. To test this prediction, we studied the response of the cactus bug (Narnia pallidicornis) to meristem allocation by tree cholla cactus (Opuntia imbricata). We evaluated the explanatory power of demographic models that incorporated variation in cactus relative reproductive effort (RRE; the proportion of meristems allocated toward reproduction). Field data provided strong support for a single model that defined herbivore fecundity as a …

The Role Of Visual Ornamentation In Female Choice Of A Multimodal Male Courtship Display, Eileen Hebets, K. Cuasay, P. K. Rivlin Nov 2006

The Role Of Visual Ornamentation In Female Choice Of A Multimodal Male Courtship Display, Eileen Hebets, K. Cuasay, P. K. Rivlin

Eileen Hebets Publications

The courtship behavior of male Schizocosa uetzi wolf spiders incorporates both visual and seismic signals into a multimodal display. These two signals have been shown to interact in such a manner that the seismic signal alters a female’s response to the visual signal, leading to a putative increased importance of visual signaling in the presence of a seismic signal. Experiments leading to this attention-focusing hypothesis relied in part on the video playback technique, eliciting the question of its significance under more biologically relevant conditions. Here, we directly examine female mate choice of males with differing visual signals (foreleg pigmentation) both …

This study of the Arabic 4-volume book of Al-Mukhtar Fi Al-Tibb (Choice Book on Medicine) written by the Muslim physician Muhadhdhab Al-Deen Al-Baghdadi (515-610 H, 1117-1213 AD) aimed at evaluating his contributions to the progress of medicine and urology along with providing English translations of relevant excerpts. Al-Baghdadi laid emphasis on the morals of medical practice and the principles of medical education describing how to select medical students and how to evaluate graduates. He stressed on the need for a long training program directly supervised by skilled expert doctors both in hospitals (Al-Bimaristanat) and during home visits. A good part …

Rheumatoid Arthritis, Cytokines And Hypoxia. What Is The Link?, Ahmed K. Al-Shukaili, Ali A. Al-Jabri Nov 2006

Rheumatoid Arthritis, Cytokines And Hypoxia. What Is The Link?, Ahmed K. Al-Shukaili, Ali A. Al-Jabri

Saudi Medical Journal

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic systemic inflammatory disorder that affects approximately 1% of the population, in a female to male ratio of 3:1. The disease can occur at any age, but it is most common among those aged 40-70 years. Despite many years of study, the etiology of RA is still undefined. However, with increased understanding of the immune system the pathogenesis of RA has become clearer. A large bulk of data suggests that T lymphocytes and macrophages play a critical role in the initiation and perpetuation of synovial inflammation. Recently, the cytokine profile of T helper cells has …

Modeling Local Interest Points For Semantic Detection And Video Search At Trecvid 2006, Yu-Gang Jiang, Xiaoyong Wei, Chong-Wah Ngo, Hung-Khoon Tan, Wanlei Zhao, Xiao Wu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Local interest points (LIPs) and their features have been shown to obtain surprisingly good results in object detection and recognition. Its effectiveness and scalability, however, have not been seriously addressed in large-scale multimedia database, for instance TRECVID benchmark. The goal of our works is to investigate the role and performance of LIPs, when coupling with multi-modality features, for high-level feature extraction and automatic video search.

A Model For Anticipatory Event Detection, Qi He, Kuiyu Chang, Ee Peng Lim Nov 2006

A Model For Anticipatory Event Detection, Qi He, Kuiyu Chang, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Event detection is a very important area of research that discovers new events reported in a stream of text documents. Previous research in event detection has largely focused on finding the first story and tracking the events of a specific topic. A topic is simply a set of related events defined by user supplied keywords with no associated semantics and little domain knowledge. We therefore introduce the Anticipatory Event Detection (AED) problem: given some user preferred event transition in a topic, detect the occurence of the transition for the stream of news covering the topic. We confine the events to …

The Allantois And Chorion, When Isolated Before Circulation Or Chorio-Allantoic Fusion, Have Hematopoietic Potential, Brandon M. Zeigler, Daisuke Sugiyama, Michael Chen, Yalin Guo, K. M. Downs, N. A. Speck Nov 2006

The Allantois And Chorion, When Isolated Before Circulation Or Chorio-Allantoic Fusion, Have Hematopoietic Potential, Brandon M. Zeigler, Daisuke Sugiyama, Michael Chen, Yalin Guo, K. M. Downs, N. A. Speck

Dartmouth Scholarship

The chorio-allantoic placenta forms through the fusion of the allantois (progenitor tissue of the umbilical cord), with the chorionic plate. The murine placenta contains high levels of hematopoietic stem cells, and is therefore a stem cell niche. However, it is not known whether the placenta is a site of hematopoietic cell emergence, or whether hematopoietic cells originate from other sites in the conceptus and then colonize the placenta. Here, we show that the allantois and chorion, isolated prior to the establishment of circulation, have the potential to give rise to myeloid and definitive erythroid cells following explant culture. We further …

Corporate Speech, Securities Regulation, And An Institutional Approach To The First Amendment, Michael R. Siebecker Nov 2006

Corporate Speech, Securities Regulation, And An Institutional Approach To The First Amendment, Michael R. Siebecker

William & Mary Law Review

Does the First Amendment shield politically tinged corporate speech from the compelled disclosure and reporting requirements embedded in the U.S. securities laws? The question arises in the securities regulation context because of an impending jurisprudential train wreck between the Supreme Court's commercial speech doctrine and its approach to corporate political speech. As corporations begin mixing commercial messages with political commentary, First Amendment jurisprudence simply provides insufficient guidance on the role government should play in regulating that speech. Although First Amendment jurisprudence generally counsels against governmental restrictions on corporate political speech without regard to the truth or falsity of the message, …

Visual Rhetoric And The Special Eloquence Of Visual Form, Leslie Atzmon Nov 2006

Visual Rhetoric And The Special Eloquence Of Visual Form, Leslie Atzmon

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Despite the recent flurry of interest in the visual, the written word continues to dominate as both the focus and medium of deep analysis. I suggest that we ought to challenge this paradigm by questioning the privileging of the verbal in western culture in general and the academy in particular. I propose that one way to do so is to elevate visual rhetoric to equal status with verbal rhetoric. Unfortunately, when visual entities are “elevated,” the “elevator” commonly turns to framing strategies that isolate artifacts from the broader cultural contexts in which they are created and used. Not only does …

Audiovisual Rhetoric A Metatheoretical Approach To Design, Gesche Joost, Arne Scheuermann Nov 2006

Audiovisual Rhetoric A Metatheoretical Approach To Design, Gesche Joost, Arne Scheuermann

DRS Biennial Conference Series

"Wherever there is design, there is rhetoric"—in this way Kenneth Burke's quotation from 1950 can be modified in order to describe the fundamental relation between the two disciplines. Rhetorical scholarship provides a set of rules and techniques for effective communication as well as a system, how to apply them with the most impact on the audience. In the approach introduced in this paper, rhetorical scholarship is transferred to design. Therefore, we present a model, which describes the design process from a theoretical point of view. We show that design can adapt basic rhetorical categories and tools for the practical work, …

The Discrete And The Continuous In Architecture And Design, L Feast Nov 2006

The Discrete And The Continuous In Architecture And Design, L Feast

DRS Biennial Conference Series

architecture and design. In architecture this has been and characterised by the displacement of deconstructivist techniques of collage and contradiction with a folded logic of continuity and curvature. A correlative development can be discerned in design within the transition from the external moral code of green design to the immanent ethics of sustainable design. This parallel development suggests a rich site for dialogue and exchange between folding in architecture and the ecology of sustainable design, one that I argue presents an immanent field of design without transcendent unification of the disciplines. This paper seeks to examine this conceptual site through …
