Evaluating Creativity In Design Problem Solving, H Casakin, S Kreitler Nov 2006

Evaluating Creativity In Design Problem Solving, H Casakin, S Kreitler

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This study focused on the assessment of creativity in design problem solving. The purpose was to examine the possibility of grounding the definition of creativity in design in parameters that may be assessed objectively. An empirical research was carried out with students of architecture from first to fifth years. Their design outputs were evaluated by expert judges. The assessment of creativity in design was based on a number of factors dealing with: fluency, flexibility, elaboration, and innovation, as well as aesthetic skills in design representation, fulfillment of design requirements, reference to context, and usefulness. Findings showed that the evaluation of …

Using Cartoons To Engage Stakeholders In Innovation And Design Of It Artefacts, L Albinsson

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper presents how cartoons have been used to engage a large number stakeholder in the design of a radical new type of IT-artefact. It demonstrates how cartoons can increase the number of people that are actively involved and also how they can aid innovation, making them useful in many types of design. It also shows how they can serve as starting point for “traditional” IT artefact development methods. It includes a case study of a pioneering project were student will participate in the design of a versatile, omnipresent electronic agent, an e-Me, that schools, authorities and companies are required …

The Fluid Contemporary Interior, S Yelavich Nov 2006

The Fluid Contemporary Interior, S Yelavich

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper explores the elision of public and private realms in the interior at advent of the 21st century. “The Fluid Contemporary Interior,” covering the mid-1980s to the present, surveys the interior spaces of the house, the apartment, the loft, the office, civic spaces, religious spaces, cultural spaces, retail spaces, restaurants, hotels, and therapeutic spaces. A critical assessment of the social implications of the contemporary interior, this paper examines the fluctuations in design typologies in a globalized era. For example, hospitals are increasingly adopting the form language of spas and health clubs to allay patient's fears and to be more …

Formative Research For Interface Design For Older Adults: Reducing Adverse Self-Medication Behaviors, Z Strickler, C Rauh, Pj Neafsey, C Lin

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The current project Reducing Adverse Self-Medication Behaviors in Older Adults builds on an earlier study by the investigators (Preventing Drug Interactions in Older Adults), in which a computer software program was developed to help older adults learn to avoid common, harmful, drug interactions. The program contains attractive, simplified animations demonstrating how two types of prescription medications (antihypertensives and anticoagulants) work in the human body, and how these can interact with over-thecounter (OTC) drugs and alcohol in ways that may lead to harmful health outcomes. The interface and animations were designed to be easy to use and appealing to older adults …

Integrated Descriptive Interactivity For Complex Collections (Idi), Daniel Pinkas, Jean-Louis Boissier, Sidonie Carrillat, Annelore Schneider, Pius Zoll

DRS Biennial Conference Series

IDI (Integrated Descripttive Interactivity for Complex Collections) is a media design research project currently conducted at the Haute école d’arts appliqués, Geneva (HEAA). IDI explores the descriptive potential of interactive video and seeks to integrate video-interactivity into a comprehensive descriptive and documentary approach to complex collections. An integrated descriptive interactivity aims at providing an intuitive account of the user’s relations to the objects or elements of a complex collection. We must emphasize that our project goes well beyond a simple combination of existing media; it seeks a new documentary modality which allows the user to browse through a collection not …

Party, Policy, Or Duty: Why Does The Supreme Court Invalidate Federal Statutes?, Thomas Keck Nov 2006

Party, Policy, Or Duty: Why Does The Supreme Court Invalidate Federal Statutes?, Thomas Keck

Political Science - All Scholarship

This paper explores three competing accounts of judicial review by comparing the enacting and invalidating coalitions for each of the fifty-three federal statutes struck down by the Supreme Court during its 1981 through 2005 terms. When a Republican judicial coalition invalidates a Democratic statute, the Court’s decision is consistent with a partisan account, and when a conservative judicial coalition invalidates a liberal statute, the decision is explicable on policy grounds. But when an ideologically mixed coalition invalidates a bipartisan statute, the decision may have reflected an institutional divide between judges and legislators rather than a partisan or policy conflict. Finding …

Mechanism Of Neuronal Injury In Cerebral Venous Thrombosis, Uzma Usman, Mohammad Wasay Nov 2006

Mechanism Of Neuronal Injury In Cerebral Venous Thrombosis, Uzma Usman, Mohammad Wasay

Department of Medicine

The impact of CVT on the brain is wide spectrum, ranging from completely normal parenchyma to brain oedema and/or haemorrhage. Multiple factors relate to neuronal injury in CVT including; dural sinus pressure, increased venous flow velocities, collateralization of venous channels, rate of occlusion, development of cytotoxic and vasogenic oedema, recanalization and accelerated myelination. It is suggested that recanalization of occluded vein, as well as, the presence or absence and the efficiency of intracranial venous collaterals, may have an impact on the extent of brain tissue damage and hence the prognosis of acute CVT.

Linking Global Warming To Inuit Human Rights, Marguerite E. Middaugh

San Diego International Law Journal

Under international law, the United States government has violated the Inuit's human rights by failing to take action against climate change. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights should find that the allegations of human rights violations by the Inuit are justified and rule in their favor. This Article first explores the impacts of climate change on the Inuit and each of the Inuit's basic human rights, which are implicated by the environmental changes. Next, the role and responsibility of the U.S. with respect to climate change is examined. This section discusses the current attitude and actions of the U.S. government, …

Bollywood Is Coming! Copyright And Film Industry Issues Regarding International Film Co-Productions Involving India, Timm Neu

San Diego International Law Journal

These developments and mutual correlating interests underscore the rising trend in the number of international co-productions and cinematographic co-operations with India. Still, the practice of movie making in India differs in many ways from industry structures in the U.S. or Germany, which shall be analyzed as potential co-production partners. Contractual relations, industry regulations, involved parties, and the legal rules are so distinct, that a comparative view from a producer's perspective shall bring into light the frameworks and copyright issues of international film co-productions involving India.

Richard Posner Meets Reb Chaim Of Brisk: A Comparative Study In The Founding Of Intellectual Legal Movements, Samuel J. Levine

San Diego International Law Journal

This Essay aims to examine some of the common elements of law and economics and the Brisker method that have contributed to their success as intellectual movements. Toward that end, the Essay compares the founding principles of these movements, exploring similarities in their essential characteristics. Part I presents and analyzes representative examples of the conceptual approach underlying each of these methods. Drawing on these and other examples of each method, Part II observes that the success of the methods stems in part from their common reliance on historical antecedents as well as their emphasis on conceptual frameworks broadly applicable within …

Beholding The Beauty Of Self: The Psychological Integration Of The Afrocentric-Self Among African-American Females Socialized In A Eurocentric Aesthetic, Donna Lynn Cook Phd Nov 2006

Beholding The Beauty Of Self: The Psychological Integration Of The Afrocentric-Self Among African-American Females Socialized In A Eurocentric Aesthetic, Donna Lynn Cook Phd

Dissertations

Self-esteem and body image disturbances prominently figure into many physical and psychological health disorders such as depression, eating disorders, anxiety disorders, and chemical dependency. In Euro-American culture, media images of femininity and physical attractiveness reinforce generally held perceptions of the idealized female beauty as tall, white, slender, and often blond and blue eyed. The physical morphology of African-American women does not genetically "fit" this westernized standard of beauty with implications for their mental health. The socialization of African-American women in a culture that embraces a different ethnic standard of beauty influences their perceptions of how physically attractive they see themselves. …

A Simplified Model For Growth Factor Induced Healing Of Wounds, F. J. Vermolen, E. Van Baaren, J. A. Adam Nov 2006

A Simplified Model For Growth Factor Induced Healing Of Wounds, F. J. Vermolen, E. Van Baaren, J. A. Adam

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

A mathematical model is developed for the rate of healing of a circular or elliptic wound. In this paper the regeneration, decay and transport of a generic 'growth factor', which induces the healing of the wound, is taken into account. Further, an equation of motion is derived for radial healing of a circular wound. The expressions for the equation of motion and the distribution of the growth factor are related in such a way that no healing occurs if the growth factor concentration at the wound edge is below a threshold value. In this paper we investigate the influence of …

Regulation As Delegation: Private Firms, Decisionmaking, And Accountability In The Administrative State, Kenneth A. Bamberger Nov 2006

Regulation As Delegation: Private Firms, Decisionmaking, And Accountability In The Administrative State, Kenneth A. Bamberger

Duke Law Journal

Administrative agencies increasingly enlist the judgment of private firms they regulate to achieve public ends. Regulation concerning the identification and reduction of risk-from financial, data and homeland security risk to the risk of conflicts of interest-increasingly mandates broad policy outcomes and accords regulated parties wide discretion in deciding how to interpret and achieve them. Yet the dominant paradigm of administrative enforcement, monitoring and threats of punishment, is ill suited to oversee the sound exercise of judgment and discretion.

“A Sea Captain In Her Own Right”: Navigating The Feminist Thought Of Huda Shaarawi, Rula B. Quawas Nov 2006

“A Sea Captain In Her Own Right”: Navigating The Feminist Thought Of Huda Shaarawi, Rula B. Quawas

Journal of International Women's Studies

Huda Shaarawi was one of the first Egyptian women who argued for women’s liberation, starting with education which would lead to full participation in the social and cultural reform and result in social usefulness and in legal and civic equality. A socialist feminist, Shaarawi promoted a successful program for social change not only from within the existing social and political order but also from within the framework of Islam and its value system. She came to be a speaking subject of feminist politics and a feminist living text for the women of her own generation. She was, and still is, …

Exploding The Class Action Agency Costs Myth: The Social Utility Of Entrepreneurial Lawyers, Myriam E. Gilles, Gary B. Friedman Nov 2006

Exploding The Class Action Agency Costs Myth: The Social Utility Of Entrepreneurial Lawyers, Myriam E. Gilles, Gary B. Friedman

Articles

In this article, we challenge the traditional view that entrepreneurial plaintiffs' class action lawyers operating entirely according to their own economic self-interest serve no social utility, or worse yet, tremendous disutility. In seeking to counter this notion, we try to show that the agency costs problem long derided in class action practice is overblown: in the majority of small-claims class actions, there is no legitimate reason to care whether class members are being undercompensated (or compensated at all), nor any reason to worry that entrepreneurial lawyers are being overcompensated. Rather, we assert that the driving force behind class action practice …

“Statistical Dueling” With Unconventional Weapons: What Courts Should Know About Experts In Employment Discrimination Class Actions, William T. Bielby, Pamela Coukos

ExpressO

When statistical evidence is offered in a litigation context, the result can be bad law and bad statistics. In recent high profile, high-stakes employment discrimination class actions against large multinationals like UPS, Wal-Mart, and Marriott, plaintiffs have claimed that decentralized and highly discretionary management practices result in systematic gender or racial disparities in pay and promotion. At class certification, plaintiffs have relied in part on statistical analyses of the company’s workforce showing companywide inequality. Defendants have responded with statistical presentations of their own, which frequently demonstrate widely varying outcomes for members of protected groups in different geographic areas of the …
