Two In Vivo Surgical Approaches For Lumbar Corpectomy Using Allograft And A Metallic Implant: A Controlled Clinical And Biomechanical Study, Philbert Huang, Munish C. Gupta, Nesrin Sarigul-Klijn, Scott Hazelwood

Biomedical Engineering

Background context: Both bone graft and metallic implants have been used in combination with the necessary anterior rod or plate instrumentation to fill the voids left by vertebral body removal, with the ultimate goal of restoring stability. One type of device that has recently been introduced is an expandable titanium telescoping cage that is designed to be used as a strut implant to fill corpectomy defects. The use of these devices has met varying success. Acceptance by surgeons and spine biomechanicians has been limited by clinical failure with subsequent loss of reduction and increase in kyphosis. In order to further …

Recent projections of climatic change have focused a great deal of scientific and public attention on patterns of carbon (C) cycling as well as its controls, particularly the factors that determine whether an ecosystem is a net source or sink of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). Net ecosystem production (NEP), a central concept in C-cycling research, has been used by scientists to represent two different concepts. We propose that NEP be restricted to just one of its two original definitions-the imbalance between gross primary production (GPP) and ecosystem respiration (ER). We further propose that a new term-net ecosystem carbon balance (NECB)-be …

Reform And Empire: The British And American Transnational Search For The Rights Of Black People In The Late Nineteenth And Early Twentieth Centuries, Thomas E. Smith Nov 2006

Reform And Empire: The British And American Transnational Search For The Rights Of Black People In The Late Nineteenth And Early Twentieth Centuries, Thomas E. Smith

Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Late nineteenth century modernity forced reformers in Great Britain and the United States to embrace a new sense of immediacy in their strategies. These new strategies, however, rarely extended to black people who were often subject to violence and discrimination in the period of high imperialism. Instead, when most reformers discussed the problems black people faced all they could offer were traditional promises of religious-based protections or “uplift.” The violence of lynching in the 1890s forced reformers to address the problems of white supremacy in a direct fashion, while promoting an understanding of the connection between the plight of African …

Guidance And Learn And Serve Program Partnerships: A View Towards Integration For Classroom Delivery, Bob Bhaerman, Harry Drier Nov 2006

Guidance And Learn And Serve Program Partnerships: A View Towards Integration For Classroom Delivery, Bob Bhaerman, Harry Drier

School K-12

The purpose of this monograph is to stimulate a dialogue between counselors, their guidance programs, and classroom teachers about how they might work together to design or continue to and implement community service-learning efforts. We first will raise a series of questions on service-learning and then tum to exploring how and where guidance programs fit into service learning outcomes and activities. As you review the questions on service learning, think of the ways in which you, in your role as counselor and guidance program manager, might become a more meaningful partner with classroom teachers. This monograph helps us to see …

Assimilation And Contrast Effects In Cultural Frame Switching: Bicultural Identity Integration And Valence Of Cultural Cues, Chi-Ying Cheng, Fiona Lee, Veronica Benet-Martinez

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This study examines how the valence of cultural cues in the environment moderates the way biculturals shift between multiple cultural identities. The authors found that when exposed to positive cultural cues, biculturals who perceive their cultural identities as compatible (high bicultural identity integration, or high BII) respond in culturally congruent ways, whereas biculturals who perceive their cultural identities as conflicting (low BII) respond in culturally incongruent ways. The opposite was true for negative cultural cues. These results show that both high and low BIIs can exhibit culturally congruent or incongruent behaviors, and have implications for understanding situations where high and …

Development Of Pcr-Based Chloroplast Dna Markers That Characterize Domesticated Cowpea (Vigna Unguiculata Ssp. Unguiculata Var. Unguiculata) And Highlight Its Crop-Weed Complex, Y. Feleke, R. S. Pasquet, P. Gepts Nov 2006

Development Of Pcr-Based Chloroplast Dna Markers That Characterize Domesticated Cowpea (Vigna Unguiculata Ssp. Unguiculata Var. Unguiculata) And Highlight Its Crop-Weed Complex, Y. Feleke, R. S. Pasquet, P. Gepts

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

In 1992, Vaillancourt and Weeden discovered a very important mutation for studying cowpea evolution and domestication. A loss of a BamHI restriction site in chloroplast DNA characterized all domesticated accessions and a few wild (Vigna unguiculata ssp. unguiculata var. spontanea) accessions. In order to screen a larger number of accessions, primers were designed to check this mutation using PCR RFLP or direct PCR methods. Using these new primers, 54 domesticated cowpea accessions and 130 accessions from the wild progenitor were screened. The absence of haplotype 0 was confirmed within domesticated accessions, including primitive landraces from cultivar-groups Biflora and Textilis, suggesting …

The Fat Cadherin Acts Through The Hippo Tumor-Suppressor Pathway To Regulate Tissue Size, Maria Willecke, Fisun Hamaratoglu, Madhuri Kango-Singh, Ryan Udan, Chiao-Lin Chen, Chunyao Tao, Xinwei Zhang, Georg Halder

Biology Faculty Publications

Background: The Hippo tumor-suppressor pathway has emerged as a key signaling pathway that controls tissue size in Drosophila. Merlin, the Drosophila homolog of the human Neurofibromatosis type-2 (NF2) tumor-suppressor gene, and the related protein Expanded are the most upstream components of the Hippo pathway identified so far. However, components acting upstream of Expanded and Merlin, such as transmembrane receptors, have not yet been identified.

Results: Here, we report that the protocadherin Fat acts as an upstream component in the Hippo pathway. Fat is a known tumor-suppressor gene in Drosophila, and fat mutants have severely overgrown imaginal discs. We …

Problem-Solving Model Of Design With A Controllable Determinization Level, Sonya S. Kwak, Myung-Suk Kim Nov 2006

Problem-Solving Model Of Design With A Controllable Determinization Level, Sonya S. Kwak, Myung-Suk Kim

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The objective of this study is to develop a problem-solving model of design with a controllable determinization level which satisfies both analytic and synthetic aspects of design activities. Rooted on the problem-solution duality model, a goal-oriented problem-solving model, which is based on the triad relationship among a problem, a solution, and a goal, is constructed. In the problem-solving model of design, the goal area is distinguished from the solution area, and the concept of “determinization” which is the process of transforming the indeterminate solution area into the quasi-determinate2 goal area is established. The determinization level controls the portion between discovery …

The Wonder Of Change: Where Do New Things Come From And How Do They Get Here?, J Z Langrish Nov 2006

The Wonder Of Change: Where Do New Things Come From And How Do They Get Here?, J Z Langrish

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper starts by exploring some answers to questions about the causes and processes of change. These answers range from the ideas of Vitruvius to modern evolutionary accounts using the concept of memes as replicators. The paper then looks at some evidence gathered by the author and his post graduate students over a period of 40 years in studies of technological innovation, design management etc. There are two main conclusions - 1. We need to be much more modest in our beliefs that intentionality, rationality, reason, scientific understanding and so on can lead to better things. 2. We need more …

Design: Category Formation, Prototypicality And (Aesthetic) Preference, M R Ranta Nov 2006

Design: Category Formation, Prototypicality And (Aesthetic) Preference, M R Ranta

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Cognitive psychology has, to a considerable extent, investigated the capacity of humans and other living creatures to categorize objects and events. The formation of categories enables us to apply previous experiences to new ones, to make inferences, to make predictions about the future, and they provide efficiency in communication - just to mention a few examples. Important questions, however, are how categories arise at all (i.e. whether, or to what extent, they are the result of environmental features or constructive processes on the part of the categorizer), and how they are represented in consciousness. Numerous cognitive psychologists have, following the …

Senac Symposium On Materials: An Experience To Give Guidelines For A “Cartography Of Materials”, Denise Dantas

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This article presents the experience of realizing a discussion forum on Design and its relation with materials as a methodological strategy to structure a “Cartography of Materials”. The event had a different configuration from the way it is normally set up in Brazil, for it promoted an articulation among academic researchers, companies that produce materials and products as well as designers working in the market. The aim was to increase the potentialities of working in the three areas involved: teaching/learning, autonomous professional working and serial industrial production. The proposal’s thematic core consisted of a reflection on the possibilities of the …

Designing Product Character: Strategy To Evaluate Product Preference And Map Design Direction, Low Chee Siong Edwin, Ching Chiuan Yen Nov 2006

Designing Product Character: Strategy To Evaluate Product Preference And Map Design Direction, Low Chee Siong Edwin, Ching Chiuan Yen

DRS Biennial Conference Series

According to Janlert and Stolterman (1997), “people, as well as things, have character- high level attributes that help us understand and relate to them.” de Bont et al. (1992) argues that users will prefer a product with characteristics that best match their needs or personality. As such, to influence user’s preference on a product, it is essential for the character of the product to be coherent with the user’s character. This is attempted by investigating products as “living objects”, eliciting specific characteristics or character attributes similar to the user. Though the concept of regarding products as animate objects is not …

Industrialisation And Social Innovation: Design In A New Context, N Morelli Nov 2006

Industrialisation And Social Innovation: Design In A New Context, N Morelli

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Many years ago, Viktor Papanek urgently called for a radical revision of the design profession, based on an exploration of new territories outside the market oriented logic. For many years Papnek’s call was ignored, but the problems he emphasised became more and more evident. Globalisation requires industrial production to adopt complex strategies that mix action at the global and the local level. While industrial production is globalising, local needs are becoming more and more complex, generating demand patterns and opportunities, often ignored by the mainstream market-oriented perspective. Papanek’s proposal was revived some years ago, with the Common Ground conference. Starting …

Lobe And Serrate Are Required For Cell Survival During Early Eye Development In Drosophila, Amit Singh, Xiao Shi, Kwang-Wook Choi Nov 2006

Lobe And Serrate Are Required For Cell Survival During Early Eye Development In Drosophila, Amit Singh, Xiao Shi, Kwang-Wook Choi

Biology Faculty Publications

Organogenesis involves an initial surge of cell proliferation, leading to differentiation. This is followed by cell death in order to remove extra cells. During early development, there is little or no cell death. However, there is a lack of information concerning the genes required for survival during the early cell-proliferation phase. Here, we show that Lobe (L) and the Notch (N) ligand Serrate (Ser), which are both involved in ventral eye growth, are required for cell survival in the early eye disc. We observed that the loss-of-ventral-eye phenotype in L or Ser mutants is due to …

Reduction In Cholesterol Absorption Is Enhanced By Stearate-Enriched Plant Sterol Esters In Hamsters, Heather E. Rasmussen, David M. Guderian Jr., Curtis A. Wray, Patrick H. Dussault, Vicki L. Schlegel, Timothy P. Carr Nov 2006

Reduction In Cholesterol Absorption Is Enhanced By Stearate-Enriched Plant Sterol Esters In Hamsters, Heather E. Rasmussen, David M. Guderian Jr., Curtis A. Wray, Patrick H. Dussault, Vicki L. Schlegel, Timothy P. Carr

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Consumption of plant sterol esters reduces plasma LDL cholesterol concentration by inhibiting intestinal cholesterol absorption. Commercially available plant sterol esters are prepared by esterifying free sterols to fatty acids from edible plant oils such as canola, soybean, and sunflower. To determine the influence of the fatty acid moiety on cholesterol metabolism, plant sterol esters were made with fatty acids from soybean oil (SO), beef tallow (BT), or purified stearic acid (SA) and fed to male hamsters for 4 wk. A control group fed no plant sterol esters was also included. Hamsters fed BT and SA had significantly lower cholesterol absorption …
