Critical Analysis Of Coprolite Evidence Of Medicinal Plant Use, Piauí, Brazil, Sérgio Augusto De Miranda Chaves, Karl J. Reinhard
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Human coprolites, dating from 8,500 to 7,000 years BP, were collected from the rock-shelter of Boqueirão da Pedra Furada, in Piauí, Brazil. These dates fall within the “Serra Talhada” cultural traditions I and II of the Tradição Nordeste, a paleohuman culture of northeastern Brazil. Archaeoparasitological analysis of the coprolites revealed whipworm eggs and hookworm eggs. Analysis of Tradição Nordeste skeletons and hair shows a variety of diseases including dental problems, osteoarthritis, and head louse infestation. Palynological analysis of the coprolites revealed 12 genera that were potentially medicinal. The pollen data were critically analyzed to assess the potentiality that the pollen …

A System For Wintering Beef Heifers Using Dried Distillers Grains, Leslie Aaron Stalker, Don C. Adams, Terry J. Klopfenstein
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
A two-year experiment compared two systems for wintering pregnant heifers. The standard system used by the ranch served as the control (CON) and the treatment system (TRT) included a dried distillers grains based supplement. Heifers in the TRT system were heavier and had greater body condition score at end of supplementation. Calving difficulty, percentage of live calves weaned and subsequent pregnancy rate were similar between systems. Calves born to heifers in the TRT system were heavier at birth and weaning. The TRT system cost $10.47/heifer less than the CON system and resulted in equivalent or improved heifer and calf growth …

Feeding Melengestrol Acetate To Bulls Prior To And At Puberty Alters Body Weight, And Hormone Concentration, April Tefler, Ryann Mcfee, Rebecca C. Bott, Joseph Schulz, Debra T. Clopton, Jeffrey W. Bergman, Karl V. Moline, Kathy Hanford, Andrea S. Cupp
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Melengestrol acetate (MGA), which is commonly used in the beef industry to manipulate ovarian activity of females, was fed to bulls at two times during development, prepubertal (5.5 to 7.5 months) and peri-pubertal (6.5 to 9.5 months), to determine effects on testes size, scrotal circumference, body weight, and/or hormone production. We can conclude that feeding bulls MGA during the prepubertal and peri-pubertal time can alter body weight and testosterone production.

Digestibility Of Undegradable Intake Protein Of Feedstuffs, Joshua R. Benton, James C. Macdonald, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Don C. Adams
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Digestibility of undegradable intake protein of subirrigated meadows, upland native range, smooth bromegrass, and other feedstuffs used in several growing trials was measured using the mobile nylon bag technique. In general, as the grazing season progressed, undegradable intake protein (UIP) digestibility of grazed forages decreased. Also, UIP digestibility was highly variable among feedstuffs. Compared to the constant 80% digestibility of UIP used by the 1996 Beef NRC, grazed and harvested forages tend to have much lower UIP digestibility values while the supplemental protein sources evaluated tend to have higher UIP digestibility values.

Economic Optimum Use Of Wet Distillers Grains In Feedlots, Kyle J. Vander Pol, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Darrell R. Mark
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
An economic analysis was conducted using feedlot performance, current feed ingredient prices, trucking, and cost of feeding inputs to determine economics of feeding wet distillers grains plus solubles (WDGS) at five dietary inclusions. The analysis also incorporated positive corn basis into the model. Cattle returns are greatest when incorporated WDGS is fed at 30 to 40% of DM at feedlots located between 0 and 60 miles from the plant. As distance of the feedlot increases from 60 to 100 miles from the plant, optimum inclusion is between 20 and 30% of dietary DM. Either a 5 or 10 cent positive …
Growth Promoting Agents And Season Effects On Blood Metabolite And Body Temperature Measures, Terry L. Mader, Wanda Kreikemeier
Growth Promoting Agents And Season Effects On Blood Metabolite And Body Temperature Measures, Terry L. Mader, Wanda Kreikemeier
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
To assess growth promoting agents efficacy among seasons, triiodothyronine, thyroxine, blood metabolites, and tympanic temperature were measured in summer and winter studies. Within each season, pens of heifers were assigned to one of six growth promotant treatments. Season by growth promotant treatment interactions (P < 0.05) indicated that the combination of estrogen and trenbolone acetate increased triiodothyronine in the winter, whereas trenbolone acetate alone decreased both triiodothyronine and thyroxine in the winter. Maximum tympanic temperature was greater (P < 0.01) in the summer than in the winter, while minimum tympanic temperature was lowered (P < 0.01) in the summer. Changes in blood metabolite levels resulting from the use of growth promotants do not appear to substantially influence seasonal changes in body temperature.

Inhibition Of Methanogenesis In Rumen Fluid Cultures, Eric Behlke, Razvan Dumitru, Stephen Ragsdale, James M. Takacs, Jess L. Miner
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
We identified 32 compounds that inhibit 13 to 100% of the methane produced by in vitro cultures of rumen fluid and have the potential to inhibit enteric methanogenesis in ruminant animals. The compounds are analogous to a substrate in the methane biosynthesis pathway, and may inhibit methane production yet not affect other organisms in the rumen.
Livestock Risk Protection Insurance Vs. Futures Hedging: Basis Risk Implications, Rik R. Smith, Darrell R. Mark, Allen L. Prosch
Livestock Risk Protection Insurance Vs. Futures Hedging: Basis Risk Implications, Rik R. Smith, Darrell R. Mark, Allen L. Prosch
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
This study analyzes the benefit of Livestock Risk Protection (LRP) insurance to cattle producers in reducing basis risk. Nebraska producers insuring fed cattle with LRP realize a basis risk reduction of one-third to one-half compared to futures or options hedging. Nebraska feeder cattle producers using LRP experience only a slight reduction in basis risk. Reduced basis risk results in smaller errors when forecasting basis levels for future time periods. With more accurate basis forecasts, producers can better estimate net hedged selling prices and, consequently, future cash flows.

Managing Phosphorus In Beef Feedlot Operations, William F. Kissinger, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Richard K. Koelsch
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
A commercial feedlot study determined manure nutrient flow in six feedlots using a corn and by-product based diet with an average P content of 0.39% (DM basis), and a range of 0.34 to 0.48%. Mass balances for N and P were conducted on each pen. The average feed nutrient intake was 0.52 lb N/head/day (64.0 + 7.6 lb/animal fed) and 0.09 lb P/head/day (10.9 + 2.2 lb/animal fed). Based upon averages from the 6,366 head of cattle, 11.5% of the feed nitrogen and 16.9% of the feed phosphorus were retained by the animal with the remaining nutrients excreted. The harvested …
The Influence Of Cooking Rate And Holding Time On Beef Flavor, Jennie M. James, Chris R. Calkins
The Influence Of Cooking Rate And Holding Time On Beef Flavor, Jennie M. James, Chris R. Calkins
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Seven muscles from 10 beef carcasses were cooked quickly or slowly and held 0 or 1 hour to explore the influence of cooking rate and holding time on beef flavor. Off-flavor intensity was lowest when beef was cooked slowly (on a 300°F grill instead of a 480°F grill) and when it was held for 1 hour prior to sensory evaluation. The infraspinatus (flat iron) had the least intense off-flavor and the vastus intermedius (knuckle bottom) had the most intense off-flavor. Slow cooking or holding for 1 hour prior to consumption reduced the intensity of off-flavor in value cuts.
Wet Distillers Grains Plus Solubles Do Not Increase Liver-Like Off-Flavors In Cooked Beef, Blaine Jenschke, Jennie James, Kyle Vander Pol, Chris R. Calkins, Terry J. Klopfenstein
Wet Distillers Grains Plus Solubles Do Not Increase Liver-Like Off-Flavors In Cooked Beef, Blaine Jenschke, Jennie James, Kyle Vander Pol, Chris R. Calkins, Terry J. Klopfenstein
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Crossbred steers fed with varying levels of wet distillers grains to test the incidence of liver-like off-flavors. USDA Choice steaks, when compared to USDA Select, had significantly higher trained sensory muscle fiber tenderness scores, less detectable connective tissue, higher juiciness scores, and more intense off-flavor ratings. USDA Choice steaks had a higher percentage of panelists denote liver-like and metallic off-flavors. Wet distillers grains did not significantly influence off-flavor indicating these by-products can be used to finish cattle without causing detrimental effects on the sensory profile.

Alfalfa stems, reed canarygrass, and switchgrass; perennial herbaceous species that have potential as biomass energy crops in temperate regions; were evaluated for their bioconversion potential as energy crops. Each forage species was harvested at two or three maturity stages and analyzed for carbohydrates, lignin, protein, lipid, organic acids, and mineral composition. The biomass samples were also evaluated for sugar yields following pretreatment with dilute sulfuric followed by enzymatic saccharification using a commercial cellulase preparation. Total carbohydrate content of the plants varied from 518 to 655 g kg-1 dry matter (DM) and cellulose concentration from 209 to 322 g kg …
Epa's Mercury Cap And Trade Rule: An Environmental Injustice For Women, Rachel Kalman
Epa's Mercury Cap And Trade Rule: An Environmental Injustice For Women, Rachel Kalman
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The note critiques the EPA's Clean Air Mercury Rule (CAMR), arguing that it prioritizes economic interests over public health, particularly harming women of childbearing age and vulnerable populations. The rule's reliance on a cap and trade system, delayed implementation, and flawed risk assessment models underestimate mercury exposure risks, disproportionately affecting subsistence communities and low-income groups. The analysis advocates for stricter emissions standards under the Maximum Achievable Control Technology (MACT) framework and greater consideration of gender-specific health impacts in regulatory decisions.
Challenging Standard Conceptions Of Tradition, Science And Technology In 2006: Why Laws Prohibiting The Sale Of Violent Video Games To Minors Should Be Ultimately Upheld, Ilana Lubin
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The note argues that regulating the sale of violent video games to minors is constitutionally justifiable, supported by scientific evidence on adolescent brain development and legal precedents. It critiques the lack of a clear legal standard in court decisions and advocates for a nuanced approach that balances First Amendment rights with public safety concerns.
The Slippery Slope: The Vitality Of Reynolds V. Us After Romer And Lawrence, James Askew
The Slippery Slope: The Vitality Of Reynolds V. Us After Romer And Lawrence, James Askew
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The note argues that the legal prohibition of polygamy, upheld by the landmark case Reynolds v. United States, is increasingly vulnerable in light of recent Supreme Court decisions, particularly *Romer v. Evans* and Lawrence v. Texas. These decisions have expanded individual rights and challenged the constitutionality of laws targeting specific groups, suggesting that the legal framework against polygamy may no longer hold. The author posits that just as same-sex marriage is gaining legal recognition, polygamous marriages should also be reconsidered under these evolving legal standards.

In this Article, Professor Eberle evaluates the relationship of religion in the classroom in Germany and the United States, as formulated by the countries' highest courts, the German Constitutional Court and the United States Supreme Court Pursuant to the German model of church-state cooperation, public finds are channeled to religious organizations, such as, for example, using the machinery of the state to rise and disperse tax monies to religious organizations. Religious groups may then use the tax monies collected to support religious education in the public schools. However, pursuant to guidelines announced by the German Constitutional Court, teaching of religious …

A Fast Parallelized Computational Approach Based On Sparse Lu Factorization For Predictions Of Spatial And Time-Dependent Currents And Voltages In Full-Body Biomodels, Ashutosh Mishra, Ravindra P. Joshi, Karl H. Schoenbach, C. D. Clark Iii
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Realistic and accurate numerical simulations of electrostimulation of tissues and full-body biomodels have been developed and implemented. Typically, whole-body systems are very complex and consist of a multitude of tissues, organs, and subcomponents with diverse properties. From an electrical standpoint, these can be characterized in terms of separate conductivities and permittivities. Accuracy demands good spatial resolution; thus, the overall tissue/animal models need to be discretized into a fine-grained mesh. This can lead to a large number of grid points (especially for a three-dimensional entity) and can place prohibitive requirements of memory storage and execution times on computing machines. Here, the …
Study Of Reliable Data Communication In Wireless Sensor Networks, Ravilochan Shamanna
Study Of Reliable Data Communication In Wireless Sensor Networks, Ravilochan Shamanna
LSU Master's Theses
A distributed wireless sensor network consists of numerous tiny autonomous sensing nodes deployed across a wide geographical area. These sensor nodes self organize and establish radio communication links with the neighboring nodes to form multi-hop routing paths to the central base station. The dynamic and lossy nature of wireless communication poses several challenges in reliable transfer of data from the sensor nodes to the sink. There are several applications of sensor networks wherein the data collected by the sensors in the network are critical and hence have to be reliably transported to the sink. An example of such an application …
La Réécriture Des Mythes Et Le Combat Des Femmes Pour Leur Libération: Étude De Maïéto Pour Zékia De Bohui Dali, De La Guerre Des Femmes De Zadi Zaourou, De La Révolte D'Affiba De Régina Yaou Et De Assémien Déhylé, Roi Du Sanwi De Bernard Dadié, Souleymane Fofana

I analyze these texts in the context of nineteenth and twenty century French works by Baudelaire (Le peintre de la vie moderne); Camus (Le mythe de Sisyphe); Aragon (Le paysan de Paris). Comparisons with feminist texts by Beyala (Femme nue, femme noire); Djebar (Femmes d'Alger dans leur appartement); Bâ (Une si longue lettre) underline how the rewriting of myths …
The Regulation Of Genes Involved In Trichome Development, Matthew Lloyd Brown
The Regulation Of Genes Involved In Trichome Development, Matthew Lloyd Brown
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Arabidopsis thaliana is an organism that can be used as a model for most of the processes that occur in flowering plants. The leaf hairs, or trichomes, of Arabidopsis thaliana are macroscopic single cells that have been used as a model system for cell fate determination, cell expansion, cell cycle regulation, cell wall deposition, as well as other processes. Initiation of the trichome cell fate is controlled by a complex of genes including GLABRA1 (GL1), TRANSPARENT TESTA GLABRA (TTG), and GLABRA3 (GL3). This work examines the role of GL3 in trichome initiation and uses plants expressing varying levels of GL3 …

Power Analysis For A Mixed Effects Logistic Regression Model, Yinmei Li
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In herd health studies, the mixed effects logistic regression model with random herd effects are commonly used for modeling clustered binary data. These models are well developed and widely used in the literature, among which is the logistic-normal regression model. In contrast to the rich literature in modeling methods, the sample size/power analysis methods for such mixed effects models are sparse. The sample size/power analysis method for the logistic-normal regression model is not readily available. This study is to develop a power analysis/sample size estimation method for the logistic-normal regression model. Extended from the sample size method for the likelihood …
Nutrient Constraints On Plant Community Production And Organic Matter Accumulation Of Subtropical Floating Marshes, Guerry O., Jr. Holm Jr.
Nutrient Constraints On Plant Community Production And Organic Matter Accumulation Of Subtropical Floating Marshes, Guerry O., Jr. Holm Jr.
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In the cycle of delta growth and decay, peat-forming wetlands span a time and space continuum. Later in the delta cycle, freshwater floating marshes become increasingly removed from external sediment subsidy and internal nutrient cycling controls plant productivity and organic matter accumulation. An interesting question is whether increased external nutrient loading can affect the basic processes that lead to peat formation—plant production and organic matter decomposition. I conducted several field studies to understand whether belowground organic matter accumulation and decomposition were affected with increased nutrient exposure; in addition, the plant community was monitored over three years. A laboratory soil respiration …
Spectral Analysis Of Total Suspended Solids Mixtures For Solids Composition Determination, Curtis W. Sutherland
Spectral Analysis Of Total Suspended Solids Mixtures For Solids Composition Determination, Curtis W. Sutherland
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Total Suspended Solids (TSS) analysis provides an initial and very basic measure for study and characterization of water quality. The present tedious procedures used for the identification of different solids constituents present in TSS and for the classification or insight into the origins of those solids are time-consuming and expensive. The research reported herein investigates the use of instrumental analysis using reflectance spectra of TSS as an attractive alternative to sufficiently characterize and identify TSS in a more rapid and economical method that could be used to study TSS transport and to identity TSS points of origin. For this investigative …

Once Proud Princes: Planters And Plantation Culture In Louisiana's Northeast Delta, From The First World War Through The Great Depression, James Matthew Reonas
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The Delta country of northeast Louisiana is a richly productive alluvial region stretching south from the Arkansas line to the confluence of the Red and Mississippi Rivers below Natchez. As the source of great cotton fortunes made during antebellum times, it reflected the Old South ideal and, for several decades after the end of the Civil War, remained firmly grounded in this old plantation culture. The economic depression of the 1890s and the coming of the boll weevil in the early 1900s, however, signaled a gradual decline that turned into full-blown dissolution in the years following the First World War. …
Evaluating Preference For Reinforcers Under Varying Schedule Requirements In Children With Developmental Disabilities, Tiffany Michelle Kodak
Evaluating Preference For Reinforcers Under Varying Schedule Requirements In Children With Developmental Disabilities, Tiffany Michelle Kodak
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Previous research has shown that preference for concurrently available reinforcers can be influenced by the reinforcement schedule (DeLeon, Neidert, Anders, & Rodriguez-Catter, 2001; Tustin, 1994). However, limited research has been conducted on specific variables that may influence preference under various schedule requirements. The present study evaluated the influence of task preference, schedule, and quality of reinforcement on choice between either an arbitrary reinforcer or a functional reinforcer. Five participants diagnosed with Autism participated in the study. In the first phase, we evaluated the effects of task preference and schedule of reinforcement on choice between a 30-s break and a high …

Control Of Listeria Species And Other Bacteria In Crawfish And Crab Processing Facilities, Utilizing Copper Drains, Coatings And Concrete, Containing Copper Ions, Artem S. Rogovskyy
LSU Master's Theses
The antibacterial properties of copper ions against Listeria spp., Pseudomonas spp., Escherichia coli and other coliforms, and total aerobic bacteria have been investigated in seafood processing environments. Our hypothesis was that drains fabricated from copper and coatings and concrete containing copper ions that have been used for sealing floors and walls could be utilized in crawfish and crab processing facilities as an effective means of controlling Listeria spp. and other unwanted bacteria. Copper in the form of copper sulfate pentahydrate was incorporated into coatings and concrete at the salt concentration of 25 ppm (6.36 ppm Cu++). Sampling sites were selected …
