Olfactory Cues And Nest Recognition In The Solitary Bee Osmia Lignaria, Christelle Guedot, Theresa Pitts-Singer, James Buckner, Jordi Bosch, William Kemp Jan 2006

Olfactory Cues And Nest Recognition In The Solitary Bee Osmia Lignaria, Christelle Guedot, Theresa Pitts-Singer, James Buckner, Jordi Bosch, William Kemp

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

The use of olfactory cues for nest recognition by the solitary bee Osmia lignaria is studied in a greenhouse environment. Glass tubes are provided as nesting cavities to allow the in-nest behavior of bees to be observed. In addition, each glass tube is cut into three sections for experimental manipulation and for subsequent chemical analysis. Nesting females drag their abdomen along the tube before exiting, spiral inside the tube, and sometimes deposit fluid droplets from the tip of the abdomen. For the manipulation, the outer section, the middle section, or both sections are removed and replaced with similar clean glass …

Nutritional Quality Of Lunches At A Seventh-Day Adventist School, M. Justine Markert Jan 2006

Nutritional Quality Of Lunches At A Seventh-Day Adventist School, M. Justine Markert

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if what the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade children (n=36) at Central Valley Christian Academy (CVCA) were eating for lunch followed the beliefs of the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) church and if lunches brought from home (LFH) provided more nutritional quality than combination lunches.

This study showed that LFH (n=26) provided more overall nutrients for the students when compared with school-provided entrée lunches (n=1) and combination lunches (n=9). When comparing LFH with combination lunches, LFH met more of the nutritional requirements based on the Recommended Dietary Intake (RDI) and the Dietary Guidelines for …

Close-Up: Contemporary Deaf Filmmakers, Karen Christie, Patricia Durr, Dorothy Wilkens Jan 2006

Close-Up: Contemporary Deaf Filmmakers, Karen Christie, Patricia Durr, Dorothy Wilkens

Presentations and other scholarship

Professors and filmmakers, Facundo Montenegro (2006) and Dr. Jane Norman (2005) have both asked the question "What is Deaf Cinema?" In this paper, we look at a number of films screened at the Deaf Rochester Film Festival (DRFF) '05 and produced by contemporary Deaf student filmmakers for some answers. In particular, we note how the filmmakers utilized the medium of film to communicate: the use of themes, discourse format, and visual aesthetics.

Roots And Wings: Asl Poems Of "Coming Home", Karen Christie, Dorothy Wilkins Jan 2006

Roots And Wings: Asl Poems Of "Coming Home", Karen Christie, Dorothy Wilkins

Presentations and other scholarship

For many Deaf people born into hearing families, coming "home" into the Deaf community for the first time is a common experience and leads to a change in language use and identity. In this paper, we relate how Deaf literary artists, and specifically ASL poets, represent this experience of "coming home." The quest for a home is also a common theme which has emerged among the literatures of postcolonial peoples in exile (Ashcroft, Griffiths, and Tifflin, 2005) and we will suggest it parallels the Deaf experience. In addition, we look at the symbols used by ASL poets for representing the …

Afterword: Elite Principles: The Ali Proposals And The Politics Of Law Reform, Carl E. Scheider Jan 2006

Afterword: Elite Principles: The Ali Proposals And The Politics Of Law Reform, Carl E. Scheider

Book Chapters

The Reporters of the PRINCIPLES were distinguished legal scholars who produced a serious and ambitious document. The contributors to the present volume subject the PRINCIPLES to probing, thoughtful, and illuminating analysis. At the volume's beginning, Professor Glendon puts the problems of family law in a broader perspective by examining the challenges families today face in living good lives. Now, at the volume's close, I want to put both the PRINCIPLES and the essays in a broader perspective. I need not vivisect the PRINCIPLES; that is admirably done by the essayists. Rather, I proffer a tool for understanding the PRINCIPLES more …

The Story Of Diamond V. Chakrabarty: Technological Change And The Subject Matter Boundaries Of The Patent System, Rebecca S. Eisenberg Jan 2006

The Story Of Diamond V. Chakrabarty: Technological Change And The Subject Matter Boundaries Of The Patent System, Rebecca S. Eisenberg

Book Chapters

Technological change often exposes unstated assumptions lurking in the law and makes them problematic, and patent law is no exception. Although the core mission of the patent system is to promote technological progress, path-breaking new technologies have not always been easily assimilated within its boundaries. The first wave of patent applications on advances in biotechnology in the 1970s illustrate some of the difficulties. Before that time, living organisms had generally been assumed to fall outside the range of patent-eligible subject matter under a timehonored exclusion for "products of nature." But genetically engineered organisms, although derived from naturally occurring life forms, …

The Story Of Sony V. Universal Studios: Mary Poppins Meets The Boston Strangler., Jessica Litman

Book Chapters

Sony v. Universal Studios may be the most famous of all copyright cases. People who know nothing about copyright know that the Sony-Betamax case held that home videotaping of television programs is fair use. Paradoxically, although the Supreme Court granted certiorari in the case to decide whether the copyright law permitted consumers to engage in private home copying of television programs, the majority ended up crafting its analysis to avoid answering that question definitively. Instead, it ruled that even if consumers sometimes violated the copyright law when they taped television programs off the air, that violation did not make the …

The Immorality And Inefficiency Of An Efficient Breach, Dawinder S. Sidhu Jan 2006

The Immorality And Inefficiency Of An Efficient Breach, Dawinder S. Sidhu

Faculty Scholarship

This Article attempts to analyze a concept in contract law known as the doctrine of efficient breach, which “compels [or at least encourages or invites] a party to a contract to breach if they can compensate the other party and remain better off than if they had fully performed the contract.”2 This doctrine appears to encourage immoral conduct, namely the breach of a contract. However, in the name of economic efficiency, wealth maximization, and social wealth, several prominent legal scholars, including Judge Richard A. Posner, the “leader of the school of Law and Economics movement,”3 have argued that an efficient …

Entrepreneurial Financing—Alternatives For Raising Capital, Paul Broude, Joseph E. Levangie Jan 2006

Entrepreneurial Financing—Alternatives For Raising Capital, Paul Broude, Joseph E. Levangie

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Most entrepreneurs are continually concerned about their finances. Their companies perhaps not yet profitable, they may have a fear of “running out of dry powder.” These entrepreneurs often have fallen in love with their company’s technologies, products, and potential markets, but they require more resources. Invariably these emerging ventures shroud their fear of the grueling capital raising marathon by presenting voluminous business plans to potential investors. They often flaunt their “optimized business models.” Investors, however, typically want to know why the potential investment is such a good deal. The entrepreneur often wants guidance regarding what to say to whom in …

Conflict, Learning, And Frustration: A Dynamic Model Of Conflict Over Time, Matthew A. Cronin, Katerina Bezrukova Jan 2006

Conflict, Learning, And Frustration: A Dynamic Model Of Conflict Over Time, Matthew A. Cronin, Katerina Bezrukova

Psychology

A continuing question in the study of conflict and conflict management is, "When is conflict helpful, and when is it harmful?" Though many have offered explanations for this (Jehn, Northcraft, & Neale, 1999), data in support of these notions have been less forthcoming, especially in relation to the helpfulness of conflict (De Dreu & Weingart, 2003). In this paper we 2 present a dynamic model of conflict that we hope will both explain and clarify the confusion by conceptualizing conflict as simultaneously containing helpful (learning related) and harmful (negative sentiment related) components. We argue how both learning and negative emotion …

Relation Of Riparian Buffer Strips To In-Stream Habitat, Macroinvertebrates And Fish In A Small Iowa Stream, Jeremy P. Duehr, Michael J. Siepker, Clay L. Pierce, Thomas M. Isenhart Jan 2006

Relation Of Riparian Buffer Strips To In-Stream Habitat, Macroinvertebrates And Fish In A Small Iowa Stream, Jeremy P. Duehr, Michael J. Siepker, Clay L. Pierce, Thomas M. Isenhart

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Macroinvertebrate and fish habitat is often degraded as a result of agriculture. Riparian buffer strips are commonly used to counteract the negative effects of agriculture in headwater streams. We assessed the relation of multi-aged riparian buffer strips to in-stream habitat, macroinvertebrate and fish assemblages in an Iowa stream. In-stream habitat, macroinvertebrates, and fish were sampled from two buffered sites and two unbuffered sites, with the greatest substrate, water depth, and velocity heterogeneity occurring in buffered sites. The highest macroinvertebrate richness (11) as well as fish species richness (14), diversity (1.99) and IBI score (3 7) were found in the site …

Artists' Depictions Of Catsteps In The Loess Hills Of Iowa: Evidence For Mid-Nineteenth Century Climate Change, Kimberly R. Dillon, Steven H. Emerman, Pamela K. Wilcox Jan 2006

Artists' Depictions Of Catsteps In The Loess Hills Of Iowa: Evidence For Mid-Nineteenth Century Climate Change, Kimberly R. Dillon, Steven H. Emerman, Pamela K. Wilcox

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Catsteps are the staircase-like features common on hillslopes of the Loess Hills of western Iowa. The record of artistic depictions of the Loess Hills was examined to determine when catsteps appeared. George Catlin, Karl Bodmer, and John James Audubon traveled up the Missouri River m 1832, 1833 and 1843, respectively, and between them, produced 31 works of art depicting either the Loess Hills or the loess bluffs on the Nebraska side of the river. Only three works by Bodmer of Blackbird Hill on the Nebraska side possibly show catsteps. The Assistant State Geologist, Orestes St. John, produced six sketches of …

Gondwanan Origin Of Major Monocot Groups Inferred From Dispersal-Vicariance Analysis, Kåre Bremer, Thomas Janssen Jan 2006

Gondwanan Origin Of Major Monocot Groups Inferred From Dispersal-Vicariance Analysis, Kåre Bremer, Thomas Janssen

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Historical biogeography of major monocot groups was investigated by biogeographical analysis of a dated phylogeny including 79 of the 81 monocot families using the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group II (APG II) classification. Five major areas were used to describe the family distributions: Eurasia, North America, South America, Africa including Madagascar, and Australasia including New Guinea, New Caledonia, and New Zealand. In order to investigate the possible correspondence with continental breakup, the tree with its terminal distributions was fitted to the geological area cladogram ((Eurasia, North America), (Africa, (South America, Australasia)) and to alternative area cladograms using the TreeFitter program. The results …

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Mitochondrial sequences are an important source of data in animal phylogenetics, equivalent in importance to plastid sequences in plants. However, in recent years plant systematists have begun exploring the mitochondrial genome as a source of phylogenetically useful characters. The plant mitochondrial genome is renowned for its variability in size, structure, and gene organization, but this need not be of concern for the application of sequence data in phylogenetics. However, the incorporation of reverse transcribed mitochondrial genes ("processed paralogs") and the recurring transfer of genes from the mitochondrion to the nucleus are evolutionary events that must be taken into account. RNA …

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Asparagales are a diverse monophyletic order that has numerous species (ca. 50% of monocots) including important crop plants such as Allium, Asparagus, and Vanilla, and a host of ornamentals such as irises, hyacinths, and orchids. Historically, Asparagales have been of interest partly because of their fascinating chromosomal evolution. We examine the evolutionary dynamics of Asparagales genomes in an updated phylogenetic framework that combines analyses of seven gene regions (atp1, atpB, matK, ndhF, rbcL, trnL intron, and trnL-F intergenic spacer) for 79 taxa of Asparagales and outgroups. Asparagales genomes are evolutionarily labile for …

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Agavaceae are an American family that comprises nine genera and ca. 300 species distributed in arid and semiarid environments, mainly in Mexico. The family is very successful and displays a wide array of ecological, reproductive, and morphological adaptations. Many of its members play important roles as keystone species, because they produce abundant resources during the reproductive season. In this paper we analyze the current knowledge about the pollination ecology of the different genera in the family and the role that pollination systems have played in the ecological and phylogenetic success of the group. After providing an overview of each of …

Racial Profiling And The War On Terror: Changing Trends And Perspectives, Abu B. Bah Jan 2006

Racial Profiling And The War On Terror: Changing Trends And Perspectives, Abu B. Bah

Ethnic Studies Review

Minorities in the United States have often been treated unfairly by law enforcement agencies. Prior to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the United States, Blacks were the main victims of racial profiling. Since the terrorist attack, however, Arabs and Muslims are becoming the primary targets for profiling by law enforcement agencies. There are some remarkable similarities between the profiling of Blacks and the profiling of Arabs and Muslims. In both cases, the fundamental problems with racial profiling are that it violates the civil liberties of innocent people and denies minorities the equal protection of the law. The War …

The Orthodoxy Of Format: Some Sketches On Legal Scholarship, William Aceves, James Cooper, Alejandro Gonzalez, Pedro Egana Marshall

Faculty Scholarship

The idea that legal scholarship should include visual elements is not a new one. Early student work blazed a trail some thirty years ago. More recent contributions have been produced by scholars such as Keith Aoki. And, in 2006, the Center for the Study of the Public Domain at Duke University published a comic book addressing copyright law and the fair use doctrine.

Despite these efforts, there does not appear to be any systematic attempt to use graphic art in legal scholarship. This project makes such an appeal. It challenges the conventional format for legal scholarship that has been used …
