Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The influence of different levels of adjusted fat thickness (AFT) and HCW slaughter end points (covariates) on estimates of breed and retained heterosis effects was studied for 14 carcass traits from serially slaughtered purebred and composite steers from the US Meat Animal Research Center (MARC). Contrasts among breed solutions were estimated at 0.7, 1.1, and 1.5 cm of AFT, and at 295.1, 340.5, and 385.9 kg of HCW. For constant slaughter age, contrasts were adjusted to the overall mean (432.5 d). Breed effects for Red Poll, Hereford, Limousin, Braunvieh, Pinzgauer, Gelbvieh, Simmental, Charolais, MARC I, MARC II, and MARC III …

Germany's World Cup Brothels: 40,000 Women And Children At Risk Of Exploitation Through Trafficking, U.S. House Of Representatives Committee On International Relations

Human Trafficking: Data and Documents

Good afternoon, everyone. In 1 month, as we know, athletes and fans will be gathering for one of the premier worldwide sporting events of our day, the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Today the Subcommittee will hear testimony on reports that the World Cup will sadly be an impetus for exploitation of women. For most soccer fans like myself, this quadrennial spectacle is a showcase of world-class athleticism and teamwork, but looming in its shadow is the very real potential that the World Cup matches will be a catalyst and magnet for sex trafficking into Germany.

Lack Of Effect Of Metyrapone And Exogenous Cortisol On Early Porcine Conceptus Development, H. G. Klemcke, J. L. Vallet, R. K. Christenson Jan 2006

Lack Of Effect Of Metyrapone And Exogenous Cortisol On Early Porcine Conceptus Development, H. G. Klemcke, J. L. Vallet, R. K. Christenson

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

In many species, including swine, fetal plasma glucocorticoids such as cortisol increase as term approaches and are responsible for final maturational changes in numerous tissues (e.g. Silver, 1990; Sangild et al. 1993, 1994; Fowden et al. 1995). On the contrary, excessive exposure to glucocorticoids during gestationmay cause intra-uterine growth retardation, developmental abnormalities or death, or lead to increased incidence of certain diseases during adult life (Blackburn et al. 1965; Reinisch et al. 1978; Seckl et al. 2000). Hence, one might speculate that a closely regulated glucocorticoid exposure is necessary throughout gestation to ensure appropriate development and survival (Klemcke et al. …

Phylogenetic Analysis Of Nadp-Malic Enzyme And Its Expression In Arabidopsis Thaliana Guard Cells, Erin Horning Jan 2006

Phylogenetic Analysis Of Nadp-Malic Enzyme And Its Expression In Arabidopsis Thaliana Guard Cells, Erin Horning

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Decreased crop yield as a result of insufficient freshwater supply is a distressing problem in world agriculture today. Plants lose water via transpiration through pores located in the epidermis on the underside of the leaf referred to as stomata. The aperture of such a pore is regulated by two adjacent guard cells that swell and subside as water follows ions that are pumped into and from the cell in response to changing environmental conditions. Our hypothesis that one of the six NADP-malic enzyme isoforms in Arabidopsis thaliana is guard-cell specific and plays a role in the mechanism of closing the …

Evolutionary Dynamics Of The Short-Nosed Fruit Bat, Cynopterus Sphinx (Pteropodidae): Inferences From The Spatial Scale Of Genetic And Phenotypic Differentiation, Jay F. Storz, Hari R. Bhat, Johnson Balasingh, P. Thiruchenthil Nathan, Thomas H. Kunz Jan 2006

Evolutionary Dynamics Of The Short-Nosed Fruit Bat, Cynopterus Sphinx (Pteropodidae): Inferences From The Spatial Scale Of Genetic And Phenotypic Differentiation, Jay F. Storz, Hari R. Bhat, Johnson Balasingh, P. Thiruchenthil Nathan, Thomas H. Kunz

Jay F. Storz Publications

We report the results of a population-genetic study of the short-nosed fruit bat, Cynopterus sphinx (Pteropodidae). The purpose of our study was to assess the relative importance of drift, gene flow, and spatially varying selection in shaping patterns of genetic and phenotypic variation across a latitudinal climatic gradient in peninsular India. At a microgeographic scale, polygynous mating resulted in a substantial reduction of effective population size. However, at a macrogeographic scale, rates of migration were sufficiently high to prevent a pronounced degree of stochastic differentiation via drift. Spatial analysis of genetic and phenotypic differentiation revealed that clinal variation in body …

Mule Deer, Western Association Of Fish And Wildlife Agencies Mule Deer Working Grop

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

Since 1922, the Western Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (WAFWA) has served as a leader promoting management and protection of fish and wildlife in the western United States and Canada. An organization represented by 17 states and four Canadian provinces, WAFWA has faced the difficult challenge of sifting through the ever-changing societal, economic, political and scientific issues that define natural resource management in a West that has undergone many changes.

WAFWA is particularly concerned about mule deer, a species that lives in every North American habitat except for the tropics, arctic and extreme deserts. Mule deer numbers and distribution …

G1279 Drinking Water: Nitrate-Nitrogen, Paul J. Jasa, Sharon O. Skipton, David L. Varner, Delynn Hay Jan 2006

G1279 Drinking Water: Nitrate-Nitrogen, Paul J. Jasa, Sharon O. Skipton, David L. Varner, Delynn Hay

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide discusses practices recommended to manage nitrate-nitrogen in a domestic water supply. Nitrogen is essential for all living things as it is an essential component of protein. Nitrogen exists in the environment in many forms and changes forms as it moves through the nitrogen cycle. However, excessive concentrations of nitrate-nitrogen in drinking water can be hazardous to health, especially for infants and pregnant women. This publication encompasses sources of nitrate in drinking water, indications of nitrate, potential health effects, testing and interpreting test results, and options for treatment.

Water Quality: Implementing The Clean Water Act, Claudia Copeland Jan 2006

Water Quality: Implementing The Clean Water Act, Claudia Copeland

Congressional Research Service Reports

Congress enacted the last major amendments to the Clean Water Act in 1987 (P.L. 100-4). Since then, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), states, and others have been working to implement the many program changes and additions mandated in the law. At issue today — more than 30 years after enactment of the core law — is what progress is being made to achieve its goals. In general, states and environmental groups fault EPA for delays in issuing guidance and providing assistance to carry out the law. EPA and others are critical of states, in turn, for not reaching beyond conventional …

Manipulating Molecules: Federal Support For Nanotechnology Research, Michael E. Davey Jan 2006

Manipulating Molecules: Federal Support For Nanotechnology Research, Michael E. Davey

Congressional Research Service Reports

The Bush Administration has requested $1.277 billion for nanotechnology research for FY2007, $24 million less than the estimated $1.301billion appropriated level for FY2006. (See Table 1.) Nanotechnology is a newly emerging field of science where scientists and engineers are beginning to manipulate matter at the molecular and atomic levels in order to obtain materials and systems with significantly improved properties. Ten nanometers is equal to one-ten thousandths the diameter of a human hair. Proponents of this technology argue that nanotechnology will lead to a new industrial revolution in the 21st century. Scientists note that nanotechnology is still in its infancy, …
