Latest Sightings Of The Striped Hyena In North Africa: Major Threats And Conservation Actions, Abderrazak El Alami, Abderrazzak Fattah, Ilyas El Alami, Ziad El Alami
Turkish Journal of Zoology
The striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena) is widely distributed across the northern half of Africa, the Middle East, the Arabian Peninsula, and parts of Asia. However, numerous studies indicate that this carnivore is in decline, and it is currently classified as near threatened on the IUCN Red List of threatened species. In North Africa, the Hyaena hyaena barbara subspecies has been extirpated from many areas. This article summarizes data collected from observations of the striped hyena in North Africa between 2004 and 2024. Among the 418 striped hyenas recorded in North Africa between 2004 and 2024, 18.4% (n = 77) were …

Examining The Association Between Awareness Of Soil Ecosystem Services And Yard Management In A Highly Urbanized And Tropical Watershed, Luis Kidany Selles, Elvia J. Melendez_Ackerman
Cities and the Environment (CATE)
Residential soil should be viewed as vital elements for sustainable cities. Of concern is that residents can be managing residential green spaces without a clear understanding of soil benefits. We performed 275 surveys in the Rio Piedras Watershed, Puerto Rico to evaluate: (1) the level of residents’ awareness about the contribution of soils to ecosystem services, and (2) the association between yard management practices with household socioeconomics and the level of residents’ awareness regarding residential soil ecosystem services. Results showed that residents were significantly less aware of the importance of soil ecosystem services in their yards compared to that of …

Laughing Doves Use Human Structures In Fragmented Habitats To Improve Breeding Success, Humphrey Tietaah Ankuor, Ziblim Abukari Imoro, Timothy Khan Aikins
Cities and the Environment (CATE)
The effects of urbanisation on our natural environment have led to a significant shift in ecosystem structure and processes, posing threats to many wildlife species. However other species adapts to urban settings exploiting food and nesting opportunities that humans provide. This study identified and mapped Laughing Dove Streptopelia senegalensis nests in human structures and trees within in an urban setting. The study characterised the nesting site selection, nest materials choices, and breeding success in human structures and trees. The results show that majority (107 nests, 86%) of the Laughing Dove nests were in human structures with only 14% (16 nests) …

Using Spiderwebs To Capture Airborne Environmental Dna (Edna) To Detect Animal Biodiversity In An Urban Park, Sabriya Ann Seid, Leonardo Gonzalez-Smith, Josephine Campos, Demian A. Willette
Cities and the Environment (CATE)
Environmental DNA (eDNA) is the genetic material shed by organisms in the environment. It has emerged as a powerful resource for assessing biodiversity, particularly in aquatic settings. The application of eDNA methods in terrestrial environments is less developed, with researchers still exploring collection methods of eDNA from the air. One novel approach recently trialed is the use of spiderwebs, a passive, natural material whose sticky silk threads can capture tiny airborne particles, including eDNA. Here, we investigated the use of spiderwebs for airborne eDNA collection as part of a broader survey of biodiversity at the urban Ascot Hills Park in …

Implementation Of Sustainable Development Goals In Higher Education, Adam Mehmet Kilic
Implementation Of Sustainable Development Goals In Higher Education, Adam Mehmet Kilic
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem that was addressed through this study is that higher education institutions play a critical role in advancing the United Nations sustainable development goals (SDGs), yet limited research offers guidance on how institutions can implement the SDGs through systems-oriented strategic planning. Guided by Hofstede’s cultural dimensions and Senge’s systems thinking, the purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the integration of SDGs into its policies and practices to inform effective, transformative approaches at a private Texas university. For this case study design, data were collected through 11 semistructured interviews, a focus group with five administrators and faculty, and …

CD38 is an established biomarker of multiple myeloma (MM), and peptide-based radiopharmaceuticals targeted to this receptor offer a route to molecularly specific imaging. In this work, we identified a novel CD38-targeted peptide sequence (HAPWFRGGGGS) through phage display and synthesized it using automated solid-phase peptide synthesis. The peptide was modified by introducing a PEG
Perioperative Vasopressors In Free-Flap Maxillofacial Procedures, Merry K. Otte, Lauren Barnes
Perioperative Vasopressors In Free-Flap Maxillofacial Procedures, Merry K. Otte, Lauren Barnes
Group: Samford University Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing
Traditionally, vasopressors are avoided in microvascular surgery. This tradition is largely based on animal studies, which demonstrated that ephedrine and phenylephrine may lead to decreased graft perfusion and pedicle thrombosis. Modern clinical evidence is largely unable to replicate these results, as no consistent correlation is observed between flap compromise and vasopressor use. Although some isolated studies show potential flap compromise with vasopressor exposure, the vast majority of modern clinical evidence suggests that vasopressor exposure poses no increased risk to flap compromise.
Liberal fluid administration is the traditional approach to hemodynamic management during microvascular surgery, however, modern clinical evidence suggests that …
The Anthropology Of Life: An Interview With Perig Pitrou, Perig Pitrou, Tomas De Oliveira, Maddalena Canna
The Anthropology Of Life: An Interview With Perig Pitrou, Perig Pitrou, Tomas De Oliveira, Maddalena Canna
Transatlantic Forum
This interview focuses on the proposal for an "anthropology of life" developed by Perig Pitrou. The conversation traces the origins of this framework to fieldwork with the Mixe of Mexico, where rituals involving the metaperson "He Who Makes Being Alive" revealed a crucial distinction between "the living" (living beings) and "life" (the causes that make them alive). This separation underpins a comparative model examining how societies socialize two fundamental dimensions: the power to generate life and the fragility of individual existences. Methodologically, the approach draws on the anthropology of techniques, employing the concept of "agentive configurations" to analyze how humans …

Using satellite-derived abundance indices over 20 years, we investigated population change among the seven Ross Sea emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) colonies. We found a 90% probability that the Ross Sea metapopulation had lower springtime attendance between 2005 and 2024 (mean change = -23%; 95% CI: -46 to +20%). We identified two distinct phases of change: slightly increasing 2005 to 2019/2020, followed by a steep decline 2020-2024, resulting in a decrease of approximately 23 000 birds in 5 years or approximately 32% of the regional population. Over the 20 years, the two southernmost colonies, Cape Crozier and Cape Colbeck, increased in …

Ayahuasca And Religious Freedom, Andrew C. Michaels
Ayahuasca And Religious Freedom, Andrew C. Michaels
Pepperdine Law Review
Ayahuasca is an ancient and powerful psychedelic brew that has been used for many centuries in the Amazon rainforest, and over past decades has been gaining popularity in western countries such as the United States. The ayahuasca brew contains dimethyltryptamine (DMT) and accordingly is banned by the Controlled Substances Act (CSA). But some groups working with ayahuasca have applied for exemptions under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA), and so far, at least five such groups have received exemptions, either via court decision or via agreement with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). However, the factors that courts and the DEA …

Changing Mercy In Aotearoa New Zealand, Anna Nicholls Victoria University Of Wellington
Changing Mercy In Aotearoa New Zealand, Anna Nicholls Victoria University Of Wellington
Journal of Global Catholicism
This paper examines the evolving expression of Catholicity within the Mercy organization in Aotearoa New Zealand. It explores the impact of Vatican II, demographic shifts, and societal changes. Through interviews with lay leaders in Whānau Mercy Ministries, the religiosity, inclusive approach, and the tension between traditional Catholic identity and pluralism in the organization are explored. A pertinent discussion concerns how the organization uses a more secular portrayal of Catherine McAuley as a unifying figure for the religiously diverse audience. The author argues that while secularization influences the organization, it fosters human flourishing and community engagement, offering opportunities for growth rather …
Ancestral Rites And Tablets As A Site Of Contestation Between Confucian Filial Piety And Catholicism: The Cases Of Chinese Confucian Yan Mo And Korean Catholic Yun Ji-Chung, Mideum Hong
Journal of Global Catholicism
This essay examines how the Confucian practice of filial piety, particularly as expressed through ancestral rites and tablets, became a focal point of contention in the encounters between Confucianism and Catholicism. Focusing on the cases of the Chinese Catholic Yan Mo and the Korean Catholic martyr Yun Ji-chung, I argue that the different historical and cultural contexts in China and Korea significantly shaped how each figure understood and responded to the practice of ancestral rites. While Catholicism spread globally, local converts developed distinct theological interpretations rooted in their respective cultural traditions. Although Yan Mo and Yun Ji-chung reached divergent conclusions …
Opening And Closing Doors: Internationalism In The Norbertine Missions To Settler And Indigenous Populations In Wisconsin, Alex Gruber
Journal of Global Catholicism
In this essay, I argue that the Premonstratensian or Norbertine Order located in Berne Abbey in the Netherlands responded strongly to a call for international ministry by going to northeast Wisconsin for Walloon settlers from Belgium and their descendants in 1893. However, these priests and brothers fell much farther short of internationalism in the mission to the Oneida Nation reservation they received in 1898. I will make my case by detailing these two missions and analyzing how the Norbertines acknowledged their international nature and practiced or failed to practice internationalism in them. Diving into the mission histories requires discussion of …
The Paradox Of Appropriation: A History Of Media Technology And Propaganda In Rwanda, 1900–1964, Claudia Brown
The Paradox Of Appropriation: A History Of Media Technology And Propaganda In Rwanda, 1900–1964, Claudia Brown
Journal of Global Catholicism
Scholars of the 1994 Rwandan genocide agree that media technology and propaganda played a role in mobilizing ordinary Rwandans in 1994 to commit genocide. Underappreciated in these inquiries is the history of the introduction of media technology and propaganda in Rwandan society by missionaries, technologies Rwandans later appropriated and applied to a pursuit of self-determination, but also in support of perpetrating genocide. A close examination of the social and political context of Rwanda’s colonial era and Catholic evangelism reveals a variety of motives for adopting propaganda as a strategy for evangelizing and rallying support for decolonization. This article casts light …
The Untameability Of The Sacred: Votive Traditions At Notre Dame De Lourdes And El Santuario De Chimayó, Gabrielle Bibeau
The Untameability Of The Sacred: Votive Traditions At Notre Dame De Lourdes And El Santuario De Chimayó, Gabrielle Bibeau
Journal of Global Catholicism
This article compares divergent votive practices at Notre Dame de Lourdes in France and El Santuario de Chimayó in New Mexico. Lourdes’ embrace of modern aesthetic values—simplicity, order, and functional clarity—has led to the removal and tight regulation of most ex-votos. By contrast, Chimayó’s roots in Latin American Baroque aesthetics, with its emphasis on abundance, drama, and hybridity, create space for a vibrant proliferation of offerings. Drawing on Jacques Rancière’s theory of aesthetics and politics as the “distribution of the sensible,” the article shows how aesthetic judgments intertwine with clerical power to curate, constrain, and authorize pilgrims’ access to the …

“Enslavement By Unbridled Passions:” Catholic Magisterial Institutional Attitudes Toward Homosexuals In Poland Between 1945 And 1989, Agnieszka Laddach
Journal of Global Catholicism
During Communism, the Polish bishops presented a narrative about (homo)sexuality with in order to create the image of a righteous moral and social life that was to influence the Catholics. In my research I conduced a thematic analysis of this narrative. I highlight the doctrinal and Polish social-religious context to foreground tendencies in the formation of Church teaching about homosexuality as well as the importance of the Church in Poland to its formation. Then, I show the factors that characterize the episcopal discourse’s content and language about homosexuality, recognizing that components of episcopal discourse suggest a specificity of Church potential …
The Ai Litmus Test: Humanize, Deepen, And Delight K12 Learning, Scott H. Sorvaag
The Ai Litmus Test: Humanize, Deepen, And Delight K12 Learning, Scott H. Sorvaag
Essays in Education
This article introduces the AI Litmus Test, a practical framework designed to help educators evaluate when artificial intelligence meaningfully enhances K–12 learning. Grounded in a human-centered leadership stance, the framework asserts that effective AI use in schools must humanize learning, deepen student thinking, and reduce unnecessary burdens. Through conceptual framing, implementation guidance, and classroom snapshots, the article shows how AI can support connection, cognitive rigor, and joy when used with intentional pedagogical and ethical design. It also highlights risks such as dehumanization, cognitive offloading, and over‑automation, offering safeguards including verification routines, human‑authored feedback, and transparent ethics notes. The article concludes …

Myeloid malignancies carrying somatic DNMT3A mutations (DNMT3Amut) are refractory to standard therapy. DNMT3Amut leukemia cells accumulate toxic DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) and stalled replication forks, rendering them dependent on DNA damage response (DDR). We report here that DNA polymerase theta (Polθ), a key element in DSB repair by end-joining (Polθ-mediated end-joining [TMEJ]) and in fork restarting, promotes survival and proliferation of DNMT3Amut leukemia cells. Polθ is overexpressed in DNMT3Amut leukemia cells due to abrogation of PARP1 PARylation-dependent UBE2O E3 ligase-mediated ubiquitination and proteasomal degradation of Polθ. In addition, PARP1-mediated recruitment of the SMARCAD1-MSH2/MSH3 repressive complex to DSBs is diminished in …
Bad Men In The Bordertown: Confronting Police Violence Against Native Americans With The Bad Men Treaty Clauses, Taylor Graham
Bad Men In The Bordertown: Confronting Police Violence Against Native Americans With The Bad Men Treaty Clauses, Taylor Graham
New Mexico Law Review
In nine treaties signed by Tribal Nations and the United States between 1867 and 1868, the United States promised redress to Native Americans for wrongs committed against them by “bad men among the whites.” Today, Native Americans are more likely to be killed by police than any other group, with much of this violence concentrated near the borders of Tribal Nations. Although claims brought under the “bad men” treaty clauses offer an avenue for combatting this epidemic of violence, courts have begun interpreting the clauses to apply only when “wrongs” occur within Tribal boundaries. This article argues that the territoriality …
Predicting The Future Past: Human Cognitive Limits And Proximate Cause Determinations In Civil Actions, Dr. Molly Wilson, Helen Webster
Predicting The Future Past: Human Cognitive Limits And Proximate Cause Determinations In Civil Actions, Dr. Molly Wilson, Helen Webster
New Mexico Law Review
Juror decision-making is inherently influenced by psychological biases, which pose a significant challenge to the fairness and accuracy of proximate cause determinations in tort cases. This Article explores the cognitive and social biases—such as hindsight bias, primacy, anchoring, belief in a just world, and moral outrage—that affect jurors as they engage in the complex reasoning required to assess foreseeability and causation. Given that jurors must disregard their knowledge of actual harm and set aside emotional responses to tragic injuries, the risk of bias is substantial. Traditional jury instructions have proven insufficient in mitigating these effects. As a solution, this Article …
The Goshuin Journey: Sacred Seal Pilgrimage In Contemporary Japan, Nachika Kaneko, John Shultz
The Goshuin Journey: Sacred Seal Pilgrimage In Contemporary Japan, Nachika Kaneko, John Shultz
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Goshuin (御朱印), red stamps accompanied by calligraphic inscriptions obtained at Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples, have become a universal and critical element of sacred site visitation in Japan. Their collection represents perhaps the most widespread form of pilgrimage in contemporary society. Seal-oriented pilgrimages, known as goshuin meguri (御朱印巡り), are typically free-form and self-directed, and this practice entered a nationwide boom that appears to have peaked around 2019. Despite its popularity, goshuin pilgrimage has received only limited—and often speculative—scholarly attention, with little reliance on empirical data. Kinjoji Temple (金城寺), a Shingon Buddhist temple in Toyama Prefecture, is known for offering a …
The Resurrection Of Doshu-Michi: Reviving A Forgotten Pilgrimage Route In Japan, Ryosei Kaneko
The Resurrection Of Doshu-Michi: Reviving A Forgotten Pilgrimage Route In Japan, Ryosei Kaneko
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
This study reveals the rediscovery of the Doshu-michi, a 30-kilometer historical pilgrimage route associated with Akao Doshu, a devout follower of Jôdo Shin Buddhism (True Pure Land Buddhism) during the late 15th century. The research focused on identifying and reviving the original pilgrimage path traveled by Doshu, a route that begins at Gyotokuji Temple, which he founded, and Dozenji Temple, his birthplace, and ends at Zuisenji Temple, located in what is now Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture, Japan. The route follows a ridgeline at an elevation of roughly 1,000 meters. Drawing on literature reviews, oral testimony from local elders, and systematic …
A Spiritual Passage From Santiago To Sligo: Celtic Pilgrimage From St. John’S Eve To Queen Maeve’S Procession, Nichole Lariscy Ph.D.
A Spiritual Passage From Santiago To Sligo: Celtic Pilgrimage From St. John’S Eve To Queen Maeve’S Procession, Nichole Lariscy Ph.D.
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
