Climate Change: A Catastrophe In Slow Motion, R. T. Pierrehumbert Jan 2006

Climate Change: A Catastrophe In Slow Motion, R. T. Pierrehumbert

Chicago Journal of International Law

Humans have become a major geological force with the power to commit future millennia to practically irreversible changes in global conditions. This is what Bill McKibben refers to as "The End of Nature." As an example of the impact life has on global climate, the imminent global warming caused by humans does not stand out as unique or even unusually impressive. When oxygen-generating photosynthetic algae evolved between one and two-and-one-half billion years ago, they changed the composition of one-fifth of the atmosphere, poisoned much of the previous ecosystem, and more or less terminated the dominant role of methane as a …

Statecraft, Trade And The Order Of States, Ari Afilalo, Dennis Patterson Jan 2006

Statecraft, Trade And The Order Of States, Ari Afilalo, Dennis Patterson

Chicago Journal of International Law

Our Article proceeds in three principal parts. In Part I, we explore the extent to which the State continues to evolve in the twenty-first century. We draw on the literature discussing strategy to identify the hallmarks of Statecraft among the states that dominated the trading world after World War I-in particular the modern liberal democracies of Europe, the United States, and Japan. Part II argues that, just as law and strategy evolve through an interdependent and dynamic relationship, Statecraft and the international commercial order of states engender each other's evolution through an interactive process. The domestic constitutional architecture of the …

Fundamentally Conflicting Views Of The Rule Of Law In China And The West & (And) Implications For Commercial Disputes, Benedict Sheehy

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

This paper is an examination of the notions of law, the Rule of Law, and commercial practice in the West and China. The paper outlines the basic philosophical principles and legal concomitants of the Rule of Law, and the corollary Chinese principles and concomitants. It examines the traditions, differences, and similarities in thinking about the issues in each tradition. It then examines the implications of these differences in commercial dispute resolution. After this discussion of traditions, similarities, and differences and their impact on commercial dispute resolution, the paper turns to address how the discrepancies could be dealt with in the …

Dispersal Behavior Of Mosquitofish (Gambusia Holbrooki), Shireen Alemadi Jan 2006

Dispersal Behavior Of Mosquitofish (Gambusia Holbrooki), Shireen Alemadi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki) are native to the southeastern United States but invasive elsewhere, and are dominant predators in many ecosystems that they inhabit. Information on dispersal behavior will help better understand and predict mosquitofish metapopulation dynamics and invasions. I experimentally tested dispersal behavior of individual mosquitofish under a range of laboratory conditions relevant to field situations. Preliminary experiments showed that gender, lighting conditions, hunger and acclimation time did not significantly affect net dispersal rate. Power analysis based on this preliminary experiment determined that 6 replicate fish were sufficient for each subsequent experiment; I used 24 fish, and each fish was …

A Common Component-Based Software Architecture For Military And Commercial Pc-Based Virtual Simulation, Joshua Lewis Jan 2006

A Common Component-Based Software Architecture For Military And Commercial Pc-Based Virtual Simulation, Joshua Lewis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Commercially available military-themed virtual simulations have been developed and sold for entertainment since the beginning of the personal computing era. There exists an intense interest by various branches of the military to leverage the technological advances of the personal computing and video game industries to provide low cost military training. By nature of the content of the commercial military-themed virtual simulations, a large overlap has grown between the interests, resources, standards, and technology of the computer entertainment industry and military training branches. This research attempts to identify these commonalities with the purpose of systematically designing and evaluating a common component-based …

The Promiscuity Of Print: John Clare’S ‘Don Juan’ And The Culture Of Romantic Celebrity, Jason N. Goldsmith Jan 2006

The Promiscuity Of Print: John Clare’S ‘Don Juan’ And The Culture Of Romantic Celebrity, Jason N. Goldsmith

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

This essay offers a new reading of John Clare's "Don Juan," a hard-hitting and deliberately vulgar denunciation of English society and letters. In his extended Byronic performance, Clare harnesses Byron's famed sexual appetite and strong Romantic irony to dramatic effect, defiantly redeploying the machinery of literary celebrity that had produced him as "The Northamptonshire Peasant Poet." Tracing Clare's imaginative and textual investments in prostitutes and boxers, figures located at the margins of London's criminal underworld, I show how the compulsive misogyny of "Don Juan" and its obscene sexual punning form part of a concerted, if not entirely coherent, response to …

Theobald V. University Of Cincinnati - Reforming Medical Malpractice In Ohio: A Survey Of State Laws And Policy Impacts , Brian Dunne Jan 2006

Theobald V. University Of Cincinnati - Reforming Medical Malpractice In Ohio: A Survey Of State Laws And Policy Impacts , Brian Dunne

Journal of Law and Health

In its recent decision of Theobald v. University of Cincinnati, Ohio's Tenth District Court of Appeals declared that medical practitioners shall have state employee immunity, based on section 9.86 of the Ohio Revised Code, anytime they treat a patient as long as they act in a dual role to "teach" an "involved" student or resident. This immunity takes away the patient's right to sue the practitioner personally for his medical malpractice. As required by this holding, the doctor must have an employment relationship with state medical college. However, the employment relationship could encompass anything from a faculty position to something …

An Examination Of Agonistic Interactions In The Whip Spider Phrynus Marginemaculatus (Arachnida, Amblypygi), Kasey D. Fowler-Finn, Eileen Hebets Jan 2006

An Examination Of Agonistic Interactions In The Whip Spider Phrynus Marginemaculatus (Arachnida, Amblypygi), Kasey D. Fowler-Finn, Eileen Hebets

Eileen Hebets Publications

Intraspecific interactions in adult whip spiders (Phrynus marginemaculatus) were investigated in a laboratory setting to quantify agonistic interactions and to determine predictors of contest outcome. Males were initially paired with size-symmetric or size-asymmetric opponents to assess the effect of size symmetry on contests. Three weeks later, the same males were paired with either the same opponent, or a different opponent to determine whether or not individuals remember earlier encounters. Finally, we quantified aspects of female-female contests. Agonistic encounters between males are characterized by varying degrees of pedipalpal opening, elevation displays, and rapid flicking (~ 29 Hz) of the …

Environmental Effects On Pregnancy Rate In Beef Cattle, J. L. Amundson, Terry L. Mader, Richard J. Rasby, Q. S. Hu Jan 2006

Environmental Effects On Pregnancy Rate In Beef Cattle, J. L. Amundson, Terry L. Mader, Richard J. Rasby, Q. S. Hu

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Ten years of calving records were examined from Bos taurus crossbred cows (mean of 182 cows/ yr) to quantify the effects of environmental conditions during the breeding season on pregnancy rate. Estimated breeding dates were determined by subtracting 283 d from the calving date. Relationships were determined between the proportion of cows bred during the periods from the beginning of the breeding season until d 21, 42, and 60 of the breeding season and the corresponding environmental variables. Weather data were compiled from a weather station located approximately 20 km from the research site. Average daily temperature and relative humidity …

Correlated Responses In Maternal Performance Following Divergent Selection For Heat Loss In Mice, J. M. Mcdonald, Merlyn . K. Nielsen Jan 2006

Correlated Responses In Maternal Performance Following Divergent Selection For Heat Loss In Mice, J. M. Mcdonald, Merlyn . K. Nielsen

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Divergent selection in mice was applied in 3 independent replicates for high (maintenance high; MH) and low (maintenance low; ML) heat loss for 16 generations. An unselected control (maintenance control; MC) was also maintained in all replicates. Selection ceased for 26 generations; heat-loss measurement and selection resumed at generation 42. Lactation performance, dam weight, dam feed intake, and efficiency of production of pup weight were recorded or calculated for MH and ML dams in all 3 replicates at generation 46 or 47 with the objective of determining whether selection for heat loss has created correlated responses in maternal performance. One-half …

Decreased Reproductive Investment Of Female Threespine Stickleback Gasterosteus Aculeatus Infected With The Cestode Schistocephalus Solidus: Parasite Adaptation, Host Adaptation, Or Side Effect?, Eric T. Schultz, Michelle Topper, David C. Heins

EEB Articles

Parasitic infections may cause alterations in host life history, including changes in reproductive investment (absolute amount of energy allocated to reproduction) and reproductive effort (proportion of available energy allocated to reproduction). Such changes in host life history may reflect: 1) a parasite tactic: the parasite adaptively manipulates energy flow within the host so that the host is induced to make a reduction in reproductive effort and reproductive investment, making more energy available to the parasite; 2) no tactic: there is no change in host reproductive effort and reproductive investment simply decreases as a side effect of the parasite depleting host …

Investigation Of Cell Surface Phenotypes At Mucosal Sites In Response To Murine Cytomegalovirus Infection, Mary Esther Bruorton Jan 2006

Investigation Of Cell Surface Phenotypes At Mucosal Sites In Response To Murine Cytomegalovirus Infection, Mary Esther Bruorton

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

The salivary gland is the predominant effector site of mucosal immune responses in the oral cavity. In mice, the salivary glands are known to receive immune lymphocytes stimulated in inductive sites such as the gut- and nasal-associated lymphoid tissues, thus, allowing the production of antigen-specific antibodies in saliva. However, the potential of the salivary gland as a mucosal inductive site has not been fully explored. In order to investigate this concept, we have developed a model resulting in a focused salivary gland infection using intraglandular delivery of tissue culture-derived murine cytomegalovirus (tcMCMV). Utilizing this route of infection, we were capable …

Evaluación De Anticuerpos Contra El Virus De La Diarrea Viral Bovina De Un Hato En Proceso De Erradicación De La Enfermedad., Zuniga Alfonso H., Hermelinda G. Rivera, Mariluz Araínga, Alberto Manchego S.

Journal Articles: Pharmacology & Experimental Neuroscience

Antibodies against viral bovine diarrhea virus (BVDV) and of BVDV antigen in serum samples Were evaluated from cattle aged 10 to 23 months (n = 148) from a dairy herd disease eradication where the has-been carrying out since 2002. The herd is located in Santa Rita, Arequipa, Peru, and samples were collected twice on a 30-day interval. Antibodies against BVDV and BVDV antigen were analyzed by viral neutralization and capture ELISA tests respectively. Neutralising antibodies against BVDV were detected in 6.8% (10/148) of animals, and most reactors were 19 to 23 months of age. The antibody titer ranged from 8 …
