Making Emotion Visible: Felipe Trigo And La Sed De Amar (Educación Social), Louise Ciallella

Decimonónica

In his day, Felipe Trigo (1864–1916) was a polemical yet widely appreciated author. In both his essays and fiction, he proposed and actively promoted solutions for the hysteria, melancholy, and latent violence produced by the nineteenth-century gender construct of the ángel del hogar, the initially middle-class ideal that established marriage and the home as the place for all women. Yet, in 1983, Ángel Martínez San Martín could justifiably write: “El desprecio y el olvido han sido, hasta hace muy poco, los dos más fieles compañeros de (su) obra literaria” (239). Today, most critics dismiss his work or apologize for …

Four Previously Unstudied References In The Original Manuscript Of Galdós's La Desheredada, Michael Schnepf Jan 2006

Four Previously Unstudied References In The Original Manuscript Of Galdós's La Desheredada, Michael Schnepf

Decimonónica

In the literary background of Galdós's pivotal 1881 novel, La desheredada, one finds a rich array of references and allusions to authors and their works. Shakespeare's Hamlet and Cervantes's Don Quijote, for instance, share space with lesser-known works such as Faustina Sáez de Melgar's La Cruz del Olivar.1 The present essay analyzes four additional, entirely unstudied literary references found in the original manuscript of La desheredada that provide new insights into how Galdós went about researching and composing the novel that serves as the cornerstone of the Novelas Contemporáneas.

Book Review: One Foot In Heaven By David Waltner-Toews, Melanie Springer Mock Jan 2006

Book Review: One Foot In Heaven By David Waltner-Toews, Melanie Springer Mock

Faculty Publications - Department of English

Excerpt: "One Foot in Heaven, David Waltner-Toews's first published collection of fiction, is ostensibly a cycle of fourteen stories, tracing the life of Prom, a Ukrainian immigrant who moves to Alberta; Prom's children and their friends; and Prom's neighbors and acquaintances. Yet One Foot in Heaven is far more than a compilation of finely crafted narratives. As with Waltner-Toews's other published work—both his half-dozen poetry collections and his nonfiction work on the environment—One Foot in Heaven reflects a keen sense of the relationship between the material and the spiritual. Just as Waltner-Toews's 1992 book on food poisoning (Food, Sex, and …

A Phylogenomic Profile Of Globins, Serge N. Vinogradov, David Hoogewijs, Xavier Bailly, Raãºl Arredondo-Peter, Julian Gough, Sylvia Dewilde, Luc Moens, Jacques R. Vanfleteren

Wayne State University Associated BioMed Central Scholarship

Abstract

Background

Globins occur in all three kingdoms of life: they can be classified into single-domain globins and chimeric globins. The latter comprise the flavohemoglobins with a C-terminal FAD-binding domain and the gene-regulating globin coupled sensors, with variable C-terminal domains. The single-domain globins encompass sequences related to chimeric globins and «truncated» hemoglobins with a 2-over-2 instead of the canonical 3-over-3 α-helical fold.

Results

A census of globins in 26 archaeal, 245 bacterial and 49 eukaryote genomes was carried out. Only ~25% of archaea have globins, including globin coupled sensors, related single domain globins and 2-over-2 globins. From one to seven …

Gis-Based Analysis Of Ice-Breeding Seal Strandings In The Gulf Of Maine, David Harris Ph.D., Sat Gupta Jan 2006

Gis-Based Analysis Of Ice-Breeding Seal Strandings In The Gulf Of Maine, David Harris Ph.D., Sat Gupta

Faculty Publications

Phoca groenlandica (harp seals) and Cystophora cristata (hooded seals), two species of ice-breeding seals, are being sighted more frequently onshore in the Gulf of Maine since 1990, but little is known about their behavior in this ecosystem. We obtained records of 904 ice-breeding seal stranding locations in the Gulf of Maine between 1996 and 2002 from NOAA Fisheries and used a geographic information system (GIS) to conduct group-wise comparisons by species (using non-parametric techniques), and to determine the predictors of high seal-stranding density (using ordinal logistic regression analysis). Compared to harp seals, hooded seals stranded closer to deep water, farther …

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Cirrhosis with ascites is associated with impaired renal function accompanied by sodium and water retention. Although it has been suggested that mediators such as nitric oxide play a role in the development of renal failure in this situation, other mechanisms underlying the process are not well understood. This study examined the role of oxidative stress in mediating renal damage during the development of cirrhosis in order to understand mechanisms involved in the process. It was shown that carbon tetrachloride– or thioacetamide-induced cirrhosis in rats results in oxidative stress in the kidney as seen by increased lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation, …

Intestinal Mucosal Alterations In Rats With Carbon Tetrachloride-Induced Cirrhosis: Changes In Glycosylation And Luminal Bacteria, Sathish Kumar Natarajan, Prabhu Ramamoorthy, Simmy Thomas, Jayasree Basivireddy, Gagandeep Kang, Anup Ramachandran, Anna B. Pulimood, K. A. Balasubramanian Jan 2006

Intestinal Mucosal Alterations In Rats With Carbon Tetrachloride-Induced Cirrhosis: Changes In Glycosylation And Luminal Bacteria, Sathish Kumar Natarajan, Prabhu Ramamoorthy, Simmy Thomas, Jayasree Basivireddy, Gagandeep Kang, Anup Ramachandran, Anna B. Pulimood, K. A. Balasubramanian

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis is a major cause of mortality after liver cirrhosis. Altered permeability of the mucosa and deficiencies in host immune defenses through bacterial translocation from the intestine due to intestinal bacterial overgrowth have been implicated in the development of this complication. Molecular mechanisms underlying the process are not well known. In order to understand mechanisms involved in translocation of bacteria, this study explored the role of oxidative stress in mediating changes in intestinal mucosal glycosylation and luminal bacterial content during cirrhosis. CCl4-induced cirrhosis in rats led to prolonged oxidative stress in the intestine, accompanied by increased …

Direct Detection Of Double-Stranded Dna: Molecular Methods And Applications For Dna Diagnostics, Indraneel Ghosh, Cliff I. Stains, Aik T. Ooi, David J. Segal Jan 2006

Direct Detection Of Double-Stranded Dna: Molecular Methods And Applications For Dna Diagnostics, Indraneel Ghosh, Cliff I. Stains, Aik T. Ooi, David J. Segal

Cliff Stains Publications

Methodologies to detect DNA sequences with high sensitivity and specificity have tremendous potential as molecular diagnostic agents. Most current methods exploit the ability of single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) to base pair with high specificity to a complementary molecule. However, recent advances in robust techniques for recognition of DNA in the major and minor groove have made possible the direct detection of double-stranded DNA (dsDNA), without the need for denaturation, renaturation, or hybridization. This review will describe the progress in adapting polyamides, triplex DNA, and engineered zinc finger DNA-binding proteins as dsDNA diagnostic systems. In particular, the sequence-enabled reassembly (SEER) method, involving …

Reburying The Treasure—Maintaining The Continuity: Two Texts By Śākya Mchog Ldan On The Buddha-Essence, Yaroslav Komarovski Jan 2006

Reburying The Treasure—Maintaining The Continuity: Two Texts By Śākya Mchog Ldan On The Buddha-Essence, Yaroslav Komarovski

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

The rich and interconnected universe of Śākya Mchog Ldan’s views, including those on the buddha-essence, cannot be limited to or summarized in a few neat categories. Nevertheless, the following two interrelated ideas are crucial for understanding Śākya Mchog Ldan’s interpretation of the buddha-essence: 1) only Mahāyāna āryas (’phags pa) have the buddha-essence characterized by the purity from adventitious stains (glo bur rnam dag); 2) the buddha-essence is inseparable from the positive qualities (yon tan, guṇa) of a buddha; In his writings, Śākya Mchog Ldan argues against identifying the buddha- essence as a mere natural …

Effects Of Supplementing Beef Cows With Lipid From Whole Corn Germ, Jeremy Martin, Richard J. Rasby, Dennis R. Brink, Ron Lindquist, Duane Keisler, Stephen D. Kachman, Mark Dragastin Jan 2006

Effects Of Supplementing Beef Cows With Lipid From Whole Corn Germ, Jeremy Martin, Richard J. Rasby, Dennis R. Brink, Ron Lindquist, Duane Keisler, Stephen D. Kachman, Mark Dragastin

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

A two-year study was conducted with crossbred beef cows to determine whether supplementation with fat from whole corn germ either pre- or postpartum influenced ovarian activity before the breeding season, pregnancy rates, calving interval, calf performance, or serum leptin concentration. Supplements were fed for approximately 45 days before or 45 days after calving. Cows supplemented prepartum with fat from whole corn germ had shorter calving intervals. Ovarian activity before the breeding season, pregnancy rate, calf growth, and serum leptin were not different between groups.

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

A commercial feedlot experiment was conducted using 1,807 heifers to evaluate the effects of Optaflexx fed in combination with MGA on finishing heifer performance. In heifers receiving MGA throughout the entire 126-143 day feeding period, feeding Optaflexx for the last 31-38 days increased ADG and hot carcass weight compared to heifers fed MGA but not Optaflexx. Heifers fed MGA and Optaflexx had increased DMI, improved feed efficiency and increased final live weight. Carcass quality measurements were not influenced by treatment.

A Dominant Complement Fixation Pathway For Pneumococcal Polysaccharides Initiated By Sign-R1 Interacting With C1q, Youngsun Kang, Yoonkyung Do, Haekyung Lee Jan 2006

A Dominant Complement Fixation Pathway For Pneumococcal Polysaccharides Initiated By Sign-R1 Interacting With C1q, Youngsun Kang, Yoonkyung Do, Haekyung Lee

Publications

The intricate system of serum complement proteins provides resistance to infection. A pivotal step in the complement pathway is the assembly of a C3 convertase, which digests the C3 complement component to form microbial binding C3 fragments recognized by leukocytes. The spleen and C3 provide resistance against blood-borne S. pneumoniae infection. To better understand the mechanisms involved, we studied SIGN-R1, a lectin that captures microbial polysaccharides in spleen. Surprisingly, conditional SIGN-R1 knockout mice developed deficits in C3 catabolism when given S. pneumoniae or its capsular polysaccharide intravenously. There were marked reductions in proteolysis of serum C3, deposition of C3 on …

A Molecular Dissection Of The Ventromedial Hypothalamic Nucleus, Jeremy P. Segal Jan 2006

A Molecular Dissection Of The Ventromedial Hypothalamic Nucleus, Jeremy P. Segal

Student Theses and Dissertations

The ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus (VMH) plays an important role in the regulation of food intake, glucose metabolism, and body weight. However, in contrast to other hypothalamic nuclei that are also known to regulate energy homeostasis, there is a paucity of nucleus-specific marker genes for the VMH that can be used to label its constituent neurons. This represents a significant impediment to the application of molecular approaches for analyzing VMH circuitry and function. Thus, we conducted a microarray screen in order to identify VMH-specific genes that could be used to label populations of VMH neurons. Laser-capture microdissection was used to isolate …

Tmem27: A Cleaved And Shed Plasma Membrane Protein That Stimulates Pancreatic Beta Cell Proliferation, Pinar Akpinar Jan 2006

Tmem27: A Cleaved And Shed Plasma Membrane Protein That Stimulates Pancreatic Beta Cell Proliferation, Pinar Akpinar

Student Theses and Dissertations

The signals and the molecular mechanisms that regulate the replication of terminally differentiated β cells are unclear. In this thesis I report the identification of a gene encoding transmembrane protein 27 (TMEM27) in pancreatic β cells. Expression of Tmem27 is reduced in Tcf1-/- mice, which exhibit defects in proliferation, and is increased in islets of ob/ob, db/db and aP2- Srebp-1c transgenic mice with marked hypertrophy of the endocrine pancreas. Tmem27 is expressed in hormone positive cells at early stages of pancreas development and becomes restricted to pancreatic β cells in the mature pancreas. Biochemical characterization revealed that the Tmem27 exists …

The Roles Of Daf-6 And Cell-Cell Interactions In Sensory Organ Morphogenesis, Elliot A. Perens Jan 2006

The Roles Of Daf-6 And Cell-Cell Interactions In Sensory Organ Morphogenesis, Elliot A. Perens

Student Theses and Dissertations

The development of multicellular organs depends on the regulation of cell shape, position, and orientation. The genetic regulation of these morphogenetic processes is poorly understood. As a model for organ morphogenesis, I studied the development of the Caenorhabditis elegans amphid sensory organ. Sensory organs in diverse species are often composed of neuronal sensory endings accommodated in a lumen formed by ensheathing epithelia or glia. The generation of this structure may require cell-autonomous factors that control lumen formation, as well as cell non-autonomous factors that coordinate the morphogenesis of the lumen with the resident neuronal processes. Understanding these processes would provide …

Glyoxylate Metabolism In Mycobacterium Smegmatis, Lubomir Nikolaev Merkov Jan 2006

Glyoxylate Metabolism In Mycobacterium Smegmatis, Lubomir Nikolaev Merkov

Student Theses and Dissertations

Much has been learned about Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the causative agent of tuberculosis, "the great white plague," since the bacterium was isolated and initially characterized by Robert Koch over a century ago. Over the last decade, new genetic tools for manipulation of the bacterium have been developed, its genome has been sequenced, and the search for new vaccines and drug targets has greatly intensified. Yet, surprisingly little is known about which mycobacterial genes are truly important for the organism's ability to persist in the tissues of its human hosts. The metabolic pathways used by the tubercle bacillus to establish and maintain …

The Role Of Drosophila Odorant Receptors In Odor Coding, Elane Fishilevich Jan 2006

The Role Of Drosophila Odorant Receptors In Odor Coding, Elane Fishilevich

Student Theses and Dissertations

Drosophila melanogaster is a powerful genetic model organism, and a promising model system in olfaction. At the onset of my thesis research, the expression patterns of fly's 62 odorant receptors (ORs) were largely unknown. I set out to understand the rules of connectivity of olfactory sensory neurons and the resulting properties of olfactory circuit. Consequently, we assembled maps of the olfactory neuron projections in the fly brain and characterized the contribution of several ORs to olfactory-guided behavior. We compiled near-complete maps of OR-specific neuronal projections to the antennal lobe glomeruli of adult and larval fly brains. We analyzed expression profiles …
