Farming For The Future Self-Assessment Tool (Sat), Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia, Danielle England, Rebecca Ashley Jones, John Noonan, Jon Warren

Bulletins 4000 -

Western Australian produce is some of the cleanest, safest and most reliable in the world. It is also being produced in an increasingly sustainable manner as our primary producers adopt documented and industry agreed, current recommended practices. International markets and local consumers want to be confident that their goods have been produced in a sustainable manner.

Farming for the Future now gives Western Australian producers a process to demonstrate this. Farming for the Future is working with industry to identify relevant, scientifically valid and measurable sustainable practices. These on-farm practices are being aligned with business, community and government plans for …

Notopleural Mutations Enhance Defects In Imaginal Disc Epithelial Morphogenesis And Macrochete Elongation Associated With Mutations In The Stubble-Stubbloid Locus, Robert Ruggiero Jan 2006

Notopleural Mutations Enhance Defects In Imaginal Disc Epithelial Morphogenesis And Macrochete Elongation Associated With Mutations In The Stubble-Stubbloid Locus, Robert Ruggiero

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Stubble-stubbloid locus encodes a transmembrane serine protease (Stubble) necessary for the proper formation of sensory bristles, and the morphogenesis of leg and wing epithelia. Genetic and cell biological analysis indicate a role for Stubble in actin cytoskeletal dynamics and cell shape changes in developing epithelia and bristles. Previously reported genetic interactions between Stubble and the Rho1 signaling pathway suggest Stubble influences actin cytoskeleton dynamics in developing imaginal discs through interactions with the Rho1 pathway. This work will discuss a genetic screen conducted to further investigate the role of Stubble in bristle and imaginal disc morphogenesis. From 50,000 EMS-mutagenized chromosomes …

Behavioral Observations Of Western Lowland Gorillas: Understanding The Relationship Between Diets And Behaviors In Primate Bachelor Groups, Chelsea E. Quinn Jan 2006

Behavioral Observations Of Western Lowland Gorillas: Understanding The Relationship Between Diets And Behaviors In Primate Bachelor Groups, Chelsea E. Quinn

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Gorillas are one of the many animals throughout the world that are an endangered species. Studies have also shown that, genetically speaking; gorillas are closely related to humans. Because of this it should be a high priority of all people to better understand these creatures and their biology and behavior. Currently the Jacksonville Zoo is home to four male Western Lowland gorillas. These gorillas demonstrate some abnormal behaviors; behaviors that are not seen with regularity in the wild. These behaviors include regurgitating and then re-eating consumed foods and eating feces. This study explored the possibility that these abnormal behaviors are …

Polychronic Leader: What Would Leadership Research Look Like If We Considered Polychronicity?, David Palmer Jan 2006

Polychronic Leader: What Would Leadership Research Look Like If We Considered Polychronicity?, David Palmer

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

This paper proposes that research in the area of leadership would be enriched and enhanced by the explicit consideration of temporal variables, specifically polychronicity. Effective leadership involves engagement with multiple tasks, activities, and constituencies, often simultaneously. As a construct concerned with multiple task engagement and time use preferences, polychronicity is ideally situated to inform future research studies conducted to investigate a variety of extant leadership theories and traditions.

About Synergy And Dissynergy: Change, Strategic And Chaotic Decision Choices, And Resultant Outcomes, Chris Crawford Jan 2006

About Synergy And Dissynergy: Change, Strategic And Chaotic Decision Choices, And Resultant Outcomes, Chris Crawford

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

Change occurs at a rate quicker than most organizations can strategically respond. In fact, like any gambler, decision making in the current business environment is little more than playing the odds in some cases. Nonetheless, organizations attempting to succeed must try to minimize the chaotic element of decision making through the introduction of strategic thinking. Moving toward strategic thought can sometimes propel organizations into a synergistic spiral of decision making - where one decision reveals further opportunities. Likewise, organizations that fail to prepare for the chaotic will find themselves falling into a dissynergistic spiral where failure breeds even more failure. …

2006 Devils Lake Basin Water Management Plan Jan 2006

2006 Devils Lake Basin Water Management Plan

United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District

It was determined by the Devils Lake Basin Joint Water Resource Board (Joint Board) in early 2002, that a need existed to update the 1995 plan, and to re-evaluate its objectives based on more current and enhanced data. That report supercedes the 1995 Devils Lake Basin Water Management Plan (Water Plan) that was a product of the Devils Lake Basin Conceptual Water Management Plan. When the 2002 plan was completed, it was decided by the Joint Board to update the plan at least every three years. There are three main objectives of the 2006 update of the Water Plan; the …

Functional Properties Of The Isomorphic Biphasic Algal Life Cycle, Carol S. Thornber Jan 2006

Functional Properties Of The Isomorphic Biphasic Algal Life Cycle, Carol S. Thornber

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Many species of marine algae have life cycles that involve multiple separate, free-living phases that frequently differ in ploidy levels. These complex life cycles have received increasing scientific attention over the past few decades, due to their usefulness for both ecological and evolutionary studies. I present a synthesis of our current knowledge of the ecological functioning and evolutionary implications of the isomorphic, biphasic life cycles commonly found in many species of marine algae. There are both costs and benefits to life cycles with 2 morphologically similar but separate, free-living phases that differ in ploidy levels (haploids and diploids). Evolutionary theory …

Multiplex Quantitative Real-Time Reverse Transcriptase Pcr For F+-Specific Rna Coliphages: A Method For Use In Microbial Source Tracking, Merek Kirs, David C. Smith Jan 2006

Multiplex Quantitative Real-Time Reverse Transcriptase Pcr For F+-Specific Rna Coliphages: A Method For Use In Microbial Source Tracking, Merek Kirs, David C. Smith

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

It is well documented that microbial contamination of coastal waters poses a significant risk to human health through recreational exposure and consumption of shellfish. Identifying the source of microbial contamination (microbial source tracking) plays a dominant role in enabling effective management and remediation strategies. One method used to determine the source of the contamination is quantification of the ratio of the four subgroups of F+-specific RNA coliphages (family Leviviridae) in impacted water samples. Because of typically low concentrations in the environment, enrichment assays are performed prior to detection, even though differential replication rates have been reported. These …

Effects Of Lesions Of The Bed Nucleus Of The Stria Terminalis, Laterual Hypothalamus, Or Insular Cortex On Conditioned Taste Aversion And Conditioned Odor Aversion, Christopher T. Roman, Nino Nebieridze, Aristides Sastre, Steve Reilly Jan 2006

Effects Of Lesions Of The Bed Nucleus Of The Stria Terminalis, Laterual Hypothalamus, Or Insular Cortex On Conditioned Taste Aversion And Conditioned Odor Aversion, Christopher T. Roman, Nino Nebieridze, Aristides Sastre, Steve Reilly

Scholarship and Professional Work – COPHS

The effects of permanent forebrain lesions on conditioned taste aversions (CTAs) and conditioned odor aversions (COAs) were examined in 3 experiments. In Experiment 1, lesions of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis had no influence on CTA or COA acquisition. Although lesions of the lateral hypothalamus induced severe hypodipsia in Experiment 2, they did not prevent the acquisition of CTAs or COAs. Finally, in Experiment 3, lesions of the insular cortex retarded CTA acquisition but had no influence on COA acquisition. The implications of these findings are discussed with regard to the forebrain influence on parabrachial nucleus function during …

Justice Michael A. Musmanno And Obscenity (1956-1967), Joel Fishman Jan 2006

Justice Michael A. Musmanno And Obscenity (1956-1967), Joel Fishman

Duquesne Law Review

From 1957 to 1973, the United States Supreme Court was in the process of articulating and refining the standard by which a literary or artistic work would be classified as "obscene." State supreme courts were likewise addressing this issue under their own constitutions and statutes. In Pennsylvania, Justice Michael A. Musmanno struggled against United States Supreme Court opinions that, in his opinion, opened the door to the spread of all types of obscene, lewd, and immoral materials throughout society. Justice Musmanno's opinions on this matter were consistent throughout this time of change, and they frequently reflected his views on American …

Show Me The Numbers: What Data Currently Exist For Non‐Native Species In The Usa?, Alycia W. Crall, Laura A. Meyerson, Thomas J. Stohlgren, Catherine S. Jarnevich, Gregory J. Newman, Jim Graham

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Non‐native species continue to be introduced to the United States from other countries via trade and transportation, creating a growing need for early detection and rapid response to new invaders. It is therefore increasingly important to synthesize existing data on non‐native species abundance and distributions. However, no comprehensive analysis of existing data has been undertaken for non‐native species, and there have been few efforts to improve collaboration. We therefore conducted a survey to determine what datasets currently exist for non‐native species in the US from county, state, multi‐state region, national, and global scales. We identified 319 datasets and collected metadata …

Predator Survival Tactics And Use Of Habitat Cover In Rana Catesbeiana., Tara E. Bergin Jan 2006

Predator Survival Tactics And Use Of Habitat Cover In Rana Catesbeiana., Tara E. Bergin

Undergraduate Research Symposium (UGRS)

Predator-prey relationships are an important aspect of the natural world, and, because of its relevance to survival and natural selection, is an interesting relationship to study. In amphibian larvae, level of activity and landscape use are often what determines the survival as prey. I studied the anti-predator behavior of the North American bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana) tadpoles when presented with dragonfly (Aeshna) larvae, a known predator of tadpoles. Tadpoles were acclimated to four different habitats with varying degrees of habitat cover, and were transferred to a new habitat with a degree of cover equal to one of the acclimation tanks. A …

The Family Novel In The Emerging Nation-State: A Comparative Study Of Ba Jin’S Jia And Lev Tolstoy’S Anna Karenina, Adil D'Sousa

Undergraduate Research Symposium (UGRS)

The theme of family in literature and in popular discourse occurs at times when the family as an institution is under attack. Attacks against the family coupled with defence of the family are viewed as the barometer of people’s satisfaction with the society in which they live. This outpouring of emotion, whether it is in defence of or attacking the family, is the result of the family’s position on the bridge between nature and society – a fortunate (or a detrimental) link between an individual and the units that make up a society. Across the United States and much of …

Evaluation Of Rice Hulls As A Lignocellulosic Substitute In Wood Plastic Composites, P. Jack Bourne Jan 2006

Evaluation Of Rice Hulls As A Lignocellulosic Substitute In Wood Plastic Composites, P. Jack Bourne

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Rising raw material costs and shortage of woody materials necessitate alternative sources for lignocellulosic material in wood plastic composites (WPC). This study was conducted to evaluate rice hull (RH), an agricultural residue, as a cellulosic substitute in WPC. Samples were fabricated with approximately 4% zinc stearate, 48% high-density polyethylene obtained from recycled plastics and 48% lignocellulosic material by mass. The composition of the lignocellulosic material was changed from 0 to 100% RH at 20% increments while the remainder was wood flour. The extruded sampled were tested for mechanical properties such as specific gravity, water absorption, linear coefficients of thermal expansion, …

Development Of Gendered Space: The Archaic And Classical Greek Temple, Callie Williams Jan 2006

Development Of Gendered Space: The Archaic And Classical Greek Temple, Callie Williams

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Throughout the ancient Greek world, temples marked the landscape as a sign of Greek civilization. Although Greek temples hare been examined, described, and catalogued scientifically since archaeology came of age in the 18th century, the question of their cultural significance in their original Greek context has vet to be fully answered. Many twentieth-century interpreters tended to yoke the history of Greek temples to narratives of modernism, resulting in anachronistic conclusions. Current trends in architectural history have begun to test other interpretative strategies, such as the interrelationship between architecture and the emergence of Greek philosophy. This essay explores the possibilities of …

Phenomenological Analysis Of Experimentally Induced Visual Mental Imagery Associated With Shamanic Journeying To The Lower World, Adam J. Rock Jan 2006

Phenomenological Analysis Of Experimentally Induced Visual Mental Imagery Associated With Shamanic Journeying To The Lower World, Adam J. Rock

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

This study explored ostensibly shamanic journeying imagery by (a) assessing visual images across induction

techniques (i.e., sonic driving, Ganzfeld, relaxation, and sitting with eyes open); (b) determining combination(

s) of induction technique and instructions most associated with religious imagery; and (c) investigating

the origins of visual imagery. Six participants were randomly assigned to factorial combinations of

a 3 x 4 mixed design (levels of instruction x levels of induction) and were administered the Modified Affect

Bridge to explore the origins of mental imagery reported during the experimental conditions.

Phenomenological analysis yielded comprehensive constituent themes. Harner’s (1990) shamanic journeying,

coupled with …
