Trumpeter Swan Survey Of The Rocky Mountain Population, U.S. Breeding Segment Fall 2006, James A. Dubovsky

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Observers counted 507 swans (white birds and cygnets) in the U.S. Breeding Segment of the Rocky Mountain Population of trumpeter swans during fall of 2006, slightly below the count from last year (510) but the second-highest count since 1992. The numbers of white birds in the tristate region increased 6%, but the number of cygnets was 16% lower compared to counts in 2005. The numbers of young produced in Montana and Wyoming were 57% and 28% lower, respectively, than those of last year, but the number of young counted in Idaho was 77% higher. The numbers of white birds counted …

Use Of Xenopus Laevis Oocytes A Microincubators, Sergei Paylian Nov 2006

Use Of Xenopus Laevis Oocytes A Microincubators, Sergei Paylian

USF Patents

The present invention concerns methods for de-differentiation and stabilize cells, such as progenitor cells, by introducing the cells into the cytoplasm of host oocytes, such as Xenopus laevis oocytes. Advantageously, this method obviates the need for any nuclear transfer procedure, which is known to disrupt the chromosomal architecture of donor and recipient cells. The present invention also concerns host oocytes encapsulating cells that have been introduced into their cytoplasm. The present invention also concerns cells that have been removed from the host oocytes.

Insights Into Transcription Enhancer Factor 1 (Tef-1) Activity From The Solution Structure Of The Tea Domain, Asokan Anbanandam, Diana C Albarado, Catherine T Nguyen, Georg Halder, Xiaolian Gao, Sudha Veeraraghavan

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Transcription enhancer factor 1 is essential for cardiac, skeletal, and smooth muscle development and uses its N-terminal TEA domain (TEAD) to bind M-CAT elements. Here, we present the first structure of TEAD and show that it is a three-helix bundle with a homeodomain fold. Structural data reveal how TEAD binds DNA. Using structure-function correlations, we find that the L1 loop is essential for cooperative loading of TEAD molecules on to tandemly duplicated M-CAT sites. Furthermore, using a microarray chip-based assay, we establish that known binding sites of the full-length protein are only a subset of DNA elements recognized by TEAD. …

Intellectual Property And Competition – Human Economic Universals, Wolfgang Fikentscher Nov 2006

Intellectual Property And Competition – Human Economic Universals, Wolfgang Fikentscher

The Gruter Institute Working Papers on Law, Economics, and Evolutionary Biology

My contribution to this workshop is an approach to answering the question whether property, in particular intellectual property, and competition for the acquisition of such property, are innate building blocks of human behavior “deep in our brain” and inherited characteristics of our human nature, or whether they are cultural attitudes and abilities which we have to learn because we are not born with it. In the first case we would call them human universals, in the second cultural specificities. Also, a way has to be shown how we can know the one or the other.

Trust, Paul Joseph Zak Nov 2006

Trust, Paul Joseph Zak

The Gruter Institute Working Papers on Law, Economics, and Evolutionary Biology

Trust pervades every aspect of our daily lives, from business transactions to dealings with loved-ones, yet why we trust others in some instances but not others is little understood. At an aggregate level, surveys of trustworthiness show enormous differences across countries, from 3% in Brazil to 65% in Norway. This article reports on new research that has characterized the legal, social, economic, and environmental factors that cause trust to be high or low. It also reports on laboratory experiments that demonstrate that trust has a neurophysiological basis. This research shows that low trust is a fundamental cause of poverty, but …

Awakening Days At Dead River, Edward Curry Woodward Nov 2006

Awakening Days At Dead River, Edward Curry Woodward

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

Awakening Days at Dead River traces the history of a remote public park in north Hillsborough County that was once a privately-owned riverside enclave with modest cabins, and home to a popular fish camp on the Hillsborough River. The timeframe focuses on the mid-twentieth century to present, with a contextual background of earlier history in the immediate area. The story recounts the adventures and challenges of a select group of homeowners and visitors who experienced life on the Hillsborough and Dead Rivers during that timeframe. It also shows how the area evolved into a public property when regional flood control …

Defining The Components Of Academic Self-Efficacy In Navajo American Indian High School Students, Thomas R. Golightly Nov 2006

Defining The Components Of Academic Self-Efficacy In Navajo American Indian High School Students, Thomas R. Golightly

Theses and Dissertations

The academic difficulties experienced by a majority of Navajo American Indian students are well documented. Past research has focused on a variety of internal and external factors which possibly explain some of these difficulties. Low levels of academic self-efficacy (ASE) has been identified as one of the factors possibly contributing to lower than expected rates of academic achievement and low post-secondary education retention rates in this population. This investigation sought to further define the component structures of ASE using theoretical structures postulated by Bandura (1977a, 1997), namely: past success, modeling, verbal persuasion, and emotional arousal. Information about grade point averages …

The Biology Of Introduced Norway Rats On Kiska Island, Alaska, And An Evaluation Of An Eradication Approach, Gary W. Witmer, Patrick Burke, Susan Jojola, Peter Dunlevy Nov 2006

The Biology Of Introduced Norway Rats On Kiska Island, Alaska, And An Evaluation Of An Eradication Approach, Gary W. Witmer, Patrick Burke, Susan Jojola, Peter Dunlevy

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Introduced, invasive rats can cause substantial damage to native flora and fauna, including ground-nesting seabirds, when they become established on islands. We tested a control method for introduced Norway rats on Kiska Island, Alaska, during April-May, 2004, by hand-broadcasting rodenticide pellets (0.005% diaphacinone) over a 4-ha area at the rate of 28 kg/ha. We also gathered data on aspects of rat ecology and distribution, although rats were difficult to detect and capture. The rodenticide bait pellets seemed to have been effective in reducing the Norway rat population, however, this is based on a limited observation of rat sign and captures. …

On-Line Electronic Document Collaboration And Annotation, Trev R. Harmon Nov 2006

On-Line Electronic Document Collaboration And Annotation, Trev R. Harmon

Theses and Dissertations

The Internet provides a powerful medium for communication and collaboration. The ability one has to connect and interact with web-based tools from anywhere in the world makes the Internet ideal for such tasks. However, the lack of native tools can be a hindrance when deploying collaborative initiatives, as many current projects require specialized software in order to operate. This thesis demonstrates, with the comparably recent advances in browser technology and Document Object Model (DOM) implementation, a web-based collaborative annotation system can be developed that can be accessed by a user through a standards-compliant web browser. Such a system, demonstrated to …
