Dignity And Degradation: Transnational Lessons From The Constitutional Protection Of Sex, Libby Adler Nov 2006

Dignity And Degradation: Transnational Lessons From The Constitutional Protection Of Sex, Libby Adler

ExpressO

This paper begins by tracing the history of the concept of human dignity from the time of Cicero through the Enlightenment, to the aftermath of WW II. It then examines the contemporary constitutional concept across multiple national jurisdictions, focusing on cases related to sex. Ultimately, the paper urges that while dignity has been regarded as an overarching value that promises to protect all human beings against threats to the most fundamental of human rights, it instead produces undesirable hierarchies and demeans a range of sexual practices that pro-sex feminists and queers want to see constitutionally protected.

Japanese North Americans, War, And Communal Healing Through Literature: Internment Memory As An Ascent In Meaning And Beauty, Chikako D. Kumamoto Nov 2006

Japanese North Americans, War, And Communal Healing Through Literature: Internment Memory As An Ascent In Meaning And Beauty, Chikako D. Kumamoto

English Faculty Scholarship

To define ourselves as Americans, we often like to invoke the still-potent idea, inherited from the Puritans, of a "city upon a hill." Steeped in a mythic discourse on our earliest conception of America as an elect nation, this phrase envisions the community at large as "the pilot society for the world" engaged in a noble experiment of innocence, consensus, justice, and freedom for all, while driving to achieve myriad forms of greatness. But when this community at large is found fallen from the ideal conception of itself and conducts itself contrarily to its communal responsibilities towards its smaller communities …

Cyclooxygenase-2 Expression In Post-Mastectomy Chest Wall Relapse, Janet Kim Nov 2006

Cyclooxygenase-2 Expression In Post-Mastectomy Chest Wall Relapse, Janet Kim

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The purpose of this study was to assess the prognostic significance and clinical correlations of cyclooxgenase-2 expression (COX) in a cohort of patients treated with radiation (RT) for post-mastectomy chest wall relapse (PMCWR). Between 1975 and 1999, 113 patients were treated for isolated PMCWR. All patients were treated with biopsy and/or excision of the CWR followed by RT. Median follow-up was 10 years. All clinical data including demographics, pathology, staging, receptor status, HER-2/neu status, and adjuvant therapy were entered into a computerized database. Paraffin-embedded CWR specimens were retrieved from 42 patients, of which 38 were evaluated, created into a tissue …

Dysregulation Of Sodium Channels In A Rat Model Of Absence Epilepsy, Davender Khera Nov 2006

Dysregulation Of Sodium Channels In A Rat Model Of Absence Epilepsy, Davender Khera

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Absence epilepsy is a generalized form of epilepsy where spike-wave discharges (SWDs) involve both hemispheres of the brain and thereby alter consciousness. Recent evidence by Meeren et al (2002) in the WAG/Rij rat model of absence epilepsy points to a cortical focus of SWDs before rapid generalization of the SWDs. This focus belongs in the peri-oral area of the somatosensory cortex, and it was found to consistently lead SWDs in other cortical and subcortical areas. With this recent finding, it seems plausible that a defect lies in this focal region of the cortex, leading to SWD in the WAG/Rij model. …

Histone Acetylation And Expression Of Smn, The Spinal Muscular Atrophy Gene, Lauren Kernochan Nov 2006

Histone Acetylation And Expression Of Smn, The Spinal Muscular Atrophy Gene, Lauren Kernochan

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is an inherited neuromuscular disorder caused by mutation of the Survival Motor Neuron (SMN1) gene. Embryonic lethality is rescued by a nearly identical copy of the gene, SMN2, which exists in variable copy number and produces a small quantity of functional SMN protein. Because disease severity inversely correlates with SMN2 gene copy number and with SMN protein level, one therapeutic strategy has been to increase SMN2 expression. Previous investigators have demonstrated that SMN promoter activity, transcript, and SMN protein are increased in cells treated with histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors, suggesting a role for histone acetylation in …

Vulnerability Of Pathogenic Biofilms To Micavibrio Aeruginosavorus, Daniel Kadouri, Nel C. Venzon, George A. O'Toole Nov 2006

Vulnerability Of Pathogenic Biofilms To Micavibrio Aeruginosavorus, Daniel Kadouri, Nel C. Venzon, George A. O'Toole

Dartmouth Scholarship

The host specificity of the gram-negative exoparasitic predatory bacterium Micavibrio aeruginosavorus was examined. M. aeruginosavorus preyed on Pseudomonas aeruginosa, as previously reported, as well as Burkholderia cepacia, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and numerous clinical isolates of these species. In a static assay, a reduction in biofilm biomass was observed as early as 3 hours after exposure to M. aeruginosavorus, and an ∼100-fold reduction in biofilm cell viability was detected following a a 24-h exposure to the predator. We observed that an initial titer of Micavibrio as low as 10 PFU/well or a time of exposure to the predator as short as 30 …

Increase In Peripheral Arterial Tone Predicts Myocardial Ischemia Induced By Mental Stress, Brendon Lewis Graeber Nov 2006

Increase In Peripheral Arterial Tone Predicts Myocardial Ischemia Induced By Mental Stress, Brendon Lewis Graeber

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Mental stress ischemia (MSI) is associated with poor prognosis for coronary artery disease (CAD) and is amenable to treatment, yet no easily administered test exists to diagnose it. Given the known increase in systemic vascular tone in response to stress, we studied the ability of peripheral arterial tonometry (PAT), a noninvasive functional measure of arterial tone, to predict those vulnerable to MSI. Seventy-seven patients with chronic stable CAD were subjected to mental stress with concomitant assessment of myocardial perfusion and pulse wave amplitude. Nuclear perfusion imaging was used to document MSI, and PAT was used to measure pulse wave and …

The Ventilatory Response To Normoxic Hypercapnia In Male Pet-1 Knockout Mice And The Influence Of Female Sex Hormones, Simon Roderick Alfred Best Nov 2006

The Ventilatory Response To Normoxic Hypercapnia In Male Pet-1 Knockout Mice And The Influence Of Female Sex Hormones, Simon Roderick Alfred Best

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Purpose: To determine if the deficiency in the hypercapnic ventilatory response as a result of 70% loss of serotonergic neurons in male Pet-1 knockout mice and the sparing of the female Pet-1 knockout mice can been accounted for and corrected by supplementation with estrogen and progesterone. Methods: Using whole-body flow-through plethysmography, 5 male Pet-1 -/- mice and 5 wild type mice were exposed to room air, 3%, 5%, 7%, and 10% CO2 and VE measured. All mice were then treated with oral 17β-estradiol (2500 nM) for 48 hours followed by a SC injection of progesterone (2 mg/kg). One hour after …

Uncovering The Role Of Stress In Craniosynosostosis, Justin Heller Nov 2006

Uncovering The Role Of Stress In Craniosynosostosis, Justin Heller

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Craniosynostosis is the premature fusion of one or more of the cranial sutures resulting in skull deformity and possible brain dysfunction. It occurs in roughly 1 in 2,000 live births.1 It may be associated with syndromes or occur sporadically. Any cranial suture may be involved. The descriptions of the skull dysmorphologies have led to numerous hypotheses regarding the developmental trajectory of the synostosed skull, including the role of the cranial vault and cranial base. As proposed originally by Virchow (1851),2 the shape of the skull in craniosynostosis is usually attributed to a lack of local growth perpendicular to the fused …

Antimicrobial Effects Of Liquid Anesthetic Isoflurane On Candida Albicans, Viachaslau M. Barodka, Edward Acheampong, Garry Powell, Ludmilla Lobach, David A. Logan, Zahida Parveen, Valerie Armstead, Muhammad Mukhtar

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Candida albicans is a dimorphic fungus that can grow in yeast morphology or hyphal form depending on the surrounding environment. This ubiquitous fungus is present in skin and mucus membranes as a potential pathogen that under opportunistic conditions causes a series of systemic and superficial infections known as candidiasis, moniliasis or simply candidiasis. There has been a steady increase in the prevalence of candidiasis that is expressed in more virulent forms of infection. Although candidiasis is commonly manifested as mucocutaneous disease, life-threatening systemic invasion by this fungus can occur in every part of the body. The severity of candidal infections …
