Critique Of Pure Risk Assessment Or, Kant Meets Tarasoff, Douglas Mossman Md Jan 2006

Critique Of Pure Risk Assessment Or, Kant Meets Tarasoff, Douglas Mossman Md

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

This Article takes a "critical" approach to the assumptions underlying current practices of violence risk assessment. The Article first explicates a fundamental difference between how mental health researchers now interpret the phrase "violence prediction" and how they understood that phrase in the 1970s. Applying a "critical" approach, the Article then shows that courts and mental health professionals may need to abandon the hope that more accurate methods of predicting violence will help clinicians make better decisions about potential violence. Although this result may seem disappointing, it can liberate mental health professionals from regarding patients as statistical sources of risk and …

Respect Of Utilitarianism: A Response To Regan's 'Receptacles Of Value' Objection, Scott Wilson Jan 2006

Respect Of Utilitarianism: A Response To Regan's 'Receptacles Of Value' Objection, Scott Wilson

Philosophy Faculty Publications

According to Regan, classical utilitarians value individuals in the wrong way: rather than valuing them directly, the utilitarians must value individuals merely as receptacles of what is valuable (i.e. pleasure). I demonstrate that Regan's argument is ineffective. I first show that Regan's argument presupposes a faulty understanding of the nature of hedonism and intrinsic value. I then argue that since pleasures are states of individuals, when a person values a pleasure she thereby values the individual as well.

Role Of Gluconeogenesis And The Tricarboxylic Acid Cycle In The Virulence Of Salmonella Enterica Serovar Typhimurium In Balb/C Mice, Merlin Tchawa Yimga, Mary P. Leatham, James H. Allen, David C. Laux, Tyrrell Conway, Paul S. Cohen Jan 2006

Role Of Gluconeogenesis And The Tricarboxylic Acid Cycle In The Virulence Of Salmonella Enterica Serovar Typhimurium In Balb/C Mice, Merlin Tchawa Yimga, Mary P. Leatham, James H. Allen, David C. Laux, Tyrrell Conway, Paul S. Cohen

Cell and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications

In Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, the Cra protein (catabolite repressor/activator) regulates utilization of gluconeogenic carbon sources by activating transcription of genes in the gluconeogenic pathway, the glyoxylate bypass, the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, and electron transport and repressing genes encoding glycolytic enzymes. A serovar Typhimurium SR-11 Δcra mutant was recently reported to be avirulent in BALB/c mice via the peroral route, suggesting that gluconeogenesis may be required for virulence. In the present study, specific SR-11 genes in the gluconeogenic pathway were deleted (fbp, glpX, ppsA, and pckA), and the …

Sprawl And The Resilience Of Humans And Nature: An Introduction To The Special Feature, Craig R. Allen

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Human-driven change in land use and land cover is an accelerating global phenomenon with farreaching implications for food production, forest and water resources, the climate, and biogeochemical cycles (Foley et al. 2005). It affects the amount and configuration of habitat available for animals ranging from soil nematodes to elephants. It affects the provision of ecological goods and services for human beings. It affects the processes and function of ecosystems. “Sprawl”, as it has been termed, is exurban human land use change with a footprint exceeding the minimum required for the activity developed. It is that disproportionately large footprint that defines …

Profiling Helper T Cell Subset Gene Expression In Deer Mice, Lauren Oko, Bethany Aduddell-Swope, Derall Willis, Robyn Hamor, Teresa A. Coons, Brian Hjelle Jan 2006

Profiling Helper T Cell Subset Gene Expression In Deer Mice, Lauren Oko, Bethany Aduddell-Swope, Derall Willis, Robyn Hamor, Teresa A. Coons, Brian Hjelle

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) are the most common mammals in North America and are reservoirs for several zoonotic agents, including Sin Nombre virus (SNV), the principal etiologic agent of hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS) in North America. Unlike human HCPS patients, SNV-infected deer mice show no overt pathological symptoms, despite the presence of virus in the lungs. A neutralizing IgG antibody response occurs, but the virus establishes a persistent infection. Limitations of detailed analysis of deer mouse immune responses to SNV are the lack of reagents and methods for evaluating such responses.

RESULTS: We developed real-time PCR-based detection assays for …

Quantification Of Calpastatin Using An Optical Surface Plasmon Resonance Biosensor, G. H. Geesink, J. G. P. Van Der Palen, M. P. Kent, E. Veiseth, G. Hemke, M. Koohmaraie Jan 2006

Quantification Of Calpastatin Using An Optical Surface Plasmon Resonance Biosensor, G. H. Geesink, J. G. P. Van Der Palen, M. P. Kent, E. Veiseth, G. Hemke, M. Koohmaraie

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

An immunological biosensor for calpastatin was developed on a surface plasmon resonance based system (Biacore Q). The performance of the biosensor assay was evaluated using ovine and bovine muscle and heart extracts with known calpastatin activity. In addition, the relationship between immunologically detectable calpastatin at 1 day postmortem and shear force at 14 days postmortem was investigated for bovine longissimus dorsi. Calpastatin biosensor results for several experiments were linearly related to calpastatin activity measurements with correlation coeYcients ranging from 0.51 to 0.99. The intra- and inter-assay CVs were <6% (n = 12). During postmortem storage, the amount of immunologically detectable calpastatin decreased faster than the inhibitory activity in the enzymatic assay. Probably, the epitope recognized by the antibody is degraded faster than the inhibitory sites of calpastatin during postmortem storage. Calpastatin content at 1 day postmortem was correlated to shear force at 14 days postmortem (r = 0.75). It is anticipated that developments in the near future will allow for at-line calpastatin determinations in beef plants. At present, the calpastatin biosensor assay appears suitable for research purposes where large numbers of samples need to be processed for breed evaluation or selection programs because this assay requires less labor than other methods.

Contribution Of Postmortem Muscle Biochemistry To The Delivery Of Consistent Meat Quality With Particular Focus On The Calpain System, M. Koohmaraie, G. H. Geesink Jan 2006

Contribution Of Postmortem Muscle Biochemistry To The Delivery Of Consistent Meat Quality With Particular Focus On The Calpain System, M. Koohmaraie, G. H. Geesink

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Tenderness has been repeatedly reported as the most important quality aspect of meat. However, a number of studies have shown that a significant portion of retail meat can be considered tough. As a consequence, a significant consumer segment is willing to pay a premium for guaranteed tender meat. However, apart from measuring the shear force, there is no reliable method to predict tenderness. Most of the branded meat programs therefore attempt to ensure eating quality by controlling some of the factors that affect tenderness.

Meat tenderness is determined by the amount and solubility of connective tissue, sarcomere shortening during rigor …

Linkage Disequilibrium Across Six Prion Gene Regions Spanning 20 Kbp In U.S. Sheep, Benedict T. Green, Michael P. Heaton, Michael L. Clawson, William W. Laegreid

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and haplotype alleles within the prion gene (PRNP) coding sequence of domestic sheep (Ovis aries) are associated with genetic predisposition to scrapie, a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy disease of sheep. This report describes regions of linkage disequilibrium (LD) throughout the PRNP gene region in U.S. sheep and provides a genetic framework for identifying additional PRNP determinants associated with scrapie resistance. Four sequence tagged sites (i.e., STS or amplicons) totaling 3869 bp and spanning 20 kbp of genomic PRNP sequence were sequenced in a diverse panel of 90 sires representing ten popular U.S. breeds of sheep. Analysis of …
