Early Days: Genomics And Human Responses To Infection, Minghsun Liu, Stephen J. Popper, Kathleen H. Rubins, David A. Relman Jan 2006

Early Days: Genomics And Human Responses To Infection, Minghsun Liu, Stephen J. Popper, Kathleen H. Rubins, David A. Relman

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

DNA microarray-based gene transcript-profiling of the responses of primates to infection has begun to yield new insights into host–pathogen interactions; this approach, however, remains plagued by challenges and complexities that have yet to be adequately addressed. The rapidly changing nature over time of acute infectious diseases in a host, and the genetic diversity of microbial pathogens present unique problems for the design and interpretation of functional genomic studies in this field. In addition, there are the more common problems related to heterogeneity within clinical samples, the complex, non-standardized confounding variables associated with human subjects and the complexities posed by the …

Analysis Of Brain Adrenergic Receptors In Dopamine-Β-Hydroxylase Knockout Mice, Jeff D. Sanders, Patricia Szot, David Weinshenker, H. Kevin Happe, David B. Bylund, L. Charles Murrin Jan 2006

Analysis Of Brain Adrenergic Receptors In Dopamine-Β-Hydroxylase Knockout Mice, Jeff D. Sanders, Patricia Szot, David Weinshenker, H. Kevin Happe, David B. Bylund, L. Charles Murrin

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

The biosynthesis of norepinephrine occurs through a multi-enzymatic pathway that includes the enzyme dopamine-β-hydroxylase (DBH). Mice with a homozygous deletion of DBH (Dbh−/−) have a selective and complete absence of norepinephrine. The purpose of this study was to assess the expression of alpha-1, alpha-2 and beta adrenergic receptors (α1-AR, α2-AR and β-AR) in the postnatal absence of norepinephrine by comparing noradrenergic receptors in Dbh−/− mice with those in Dbh heterozygotes (Dbh+/−), which have normal levels of norepinephrine throughout life. The densities of α1-AR, α2-AR and β-AR …

Harry Potter And The Law, Benjamin H. Barton Jan 2006

Harry Potter And The Law, Benjamin H. Barton

Scholarly Works

The magnitude of the Harry Potter phenomenon alone would make it worthy of consideration; the fact that it is children's literature, and thus may play a significant part in forming a future generation's attitudes toward law and legal institutions, makes it even more so. The various contributions to this article explore various aspects of law and culture as presented in or viewed through the Harry Potter stories. The contributions of James Charles Smith and Danaya Wright address the depiction of families in the narratives and the limited role and development of family law. Benjamin H. Barton's contribution considers the failings …

Does Power Grow Out Of The Barrel Of A Modem? Some Thoughts On Jack Goldsmith And Tim Wu's 'Who Controls The Internet?', Glenn Harlan Reynolds Jan 2006

Does Power Grow Out Of The Barrel Of A Modem? Some Thoughts On Jack Goldsmith And Tim Wu's 'Who Controls The Internet?', Glenn Harlan Reynolds

Scholarly Works

This review of Jack Goldsmith and Tim Wu's Who Controls the Internet? Illusions of a Borderless World, notes that Goldsmith and Wu are correct in concluding that events in recent years undercut cyber-utopian theories of an Internet that is beyond the reach of national sovereignty. It argues, however, that the failure to achieve such goals does not mean that the Internet is unimportant as a source of expanded freedom and power on the part of ordinary people, and suggests that this trend of individual empowerment is likely to continue.

Predator-Elicited Visual Signal: Why The Turquoise-Browed Motmot Wag-Displays Its Racketed Tail, Troy G. Murphy Jan 2006

Predator-Elicited Visual Signal: Why The Turquoise-Browed Motmot Wag-Displays Its Racketed Tail, Troy G. Murphy

Biology Faculty Research

Both sexes of the turquoise-browed motmot (Eumomota superciliosa) perform a wag-display in the presence of predators, whereby their long racketed tail is repeatedly rocked side-to-side in a pendulous fashion. I tested 3 hypotheses for the function of the predator-elicited wag-display: 1) pursuit-deterrent signal, 2) warning alarm signal, and 3) self-preservation alarm signal. These hypotheses were evaluated by testing whether the presence of potential receivers (kin, conspecifics, mate) modified the way in which the wag-display was performed. Data on wag-display were collected when I experimentally presented predators to motmots and when naturally occurring predators were observed at nesting colonies. …

Notes On The Art Of Memory, Lawrence Kimmel Jan 2006

Notes On The Art Of Memory, Lawrence Kimmel

Philosophy Faculty Research

A few years ago I was asked to write a piece for a memorial Festschrift for a friend and colleague who had just died. It occurred to me then that remembrance was a very special faculty of mind; this essay takes up the threads of that remembrance. The task of understanding memory is daunting: it is ubiquitous in every aspect of life and thought. I will try to distinguish important features of memory as it functions in our individual and collective lives, but my primary concern is with a particular aspect of remembrance that is a creative resource vital to …

Poetics Of Death: Intimations And Illusions, Lawrence Kimmel Jan 2006

Poetics Of Death: Intimations And Illusions, Lawrence Kimmel

Philosophy Faculty Research

From whom shall we learn about death—that is, death itself, the intimacy of our own death? From biologists, priests, physicians, psychologists, philosophers, poets? Or from the aged, the dying, the terminally ill? And in relation to what? Self, others; body, mind, soul, world? And with respect to what? Acceptance, denial, reassurance? Surely all the above—understanding the enigma of death at any depth requires whatever assistance we can get. It is equally important to acknowledge, however, that the context and occasion of our asking is not incidental to what we can finally learn. In the most general way it is arguably …

Restoration Of Frequency-Dependent Depression Of The H-Reflex By Passive Exercise In Spinal Rats, N. B. Reese, R. D. Skinner, D. Mitchell, C. C. Yates, Christina B. Cooley, T. S. Kiser, E. E. García-Rill

Chemistry Faculty Research

Hyper-reflexia, measured as a decrease of low frequency-dependent depression of the H-reflex, is known to occur in both humans and animals after spinal cord injury (SCI). Previous studies have shown that passive exercise for 3 months could be used to restore low frequency-dependent depression of the H-reflex after SCI. To determine the effects of various periods of time on the ability of passive exercise to restore low frequency-dependent depression of the H-reflex.
