Linking The University With The Community: An Experiential Learning Project To Promote Arts Entrepreneurship, Peter Hriso, W. Andrew Clark, Tara Maxwell, Cher Cornett

ETSU Faculty Works

Teaching students entrepreneurial skills and the utility of cross-disciplinary teams is difficult if only classroom exercises are employed. In this program, university students worked together with commercial artists and business-persons residing in our declining downtown region to assist in the organization, planning and management of an established regional arts festival and to launch a new feature of the festival based on digital animation. Through experiential learning, students gained an appreciation for “real-life” budgets, deadlines, responsibilities and an appreciation of working on cross-disciplinary teams while the community observed first-hand the benefits of students trained in digital media, entrepreneurship and project management.

Association Of Leptin Gene Markers With Carcass Traits In Beef Cattle, Angela M. Sanborn, Artur J.M. Rosa, Stacy J. Linblom, Anna R. Taylor

South Dakota Beef Report, 2006

The objective of this study was to evaluate four genetic markers on the leptin gene for association with carcass traits in three crossbred families. Three half-sib families were developed from crossbred sires. Families 1, 2, and 3 comprised 26, 21, and 66 offspring, respectively (n = 113). The genetic background of the sires, dams, and offspring was 1/3 Angus, 1/3 Hereford, 1/3 Simmental. Carcass traits collected were finished weight, hot carcass weight (HCW), marbling score, Quality Grade, Longissimus muscle area (LMA), rib fat, Yield Grade, and percent kidney, pelvic, and heart fat (KPH). The four markers analyzed were located on …

Global Characterization Of Porcine Intrauterine Proteins During Early Pregnancy, Jean-Patrick R. Kayser, Jong G. Kim, Ronald Cerny, Jeffrey L. Vallet

Ronald Cerny Publications

Total protein secreted in the intrauterine lumen increases between day 10 and 13 post-estrus in both cyclic and pregnant gilts. The objective of this experiment was to identify those intrauterine proteins whose secretion changes during this time period. Sixteen mature gilts were either mated (day 0) or remained cyclic and were slaughtered at either day 10 or day 13 (n = 4 per status by day). At slaughter, each uterine horn was flushed with 20 ml Minimal Essential Medium. Flushings were dialyzed extensively against distilled water. A 0.5 ml aliquot of each was lyophilized, subjected to two-dimensional PAGE, and protein …

A Trichinella Murrelli Infection In A Domestic Dog In The United States, J.P. Dubey, D.E. Hill, D.S. Zarlenga Jan 2006

A Trichinella Murrelli Infection In A Domestic Dog In The United States, J.P. Dubey, D.E. Hill, D.S. Zarlenga

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Trichinella murrelli infection was diagnosed in a naturally infected Beagle bitch from VA, USA, where encapsulated larvae were found in histological sections of several skeletal muscles. A laboratory reared dog fed infected muscles resulted in viable muscle larvae that were subsequently infective to Swiss–Webster mice. Multiplex PCR using larvae from the experimentally infected dog demonstrated two distinct bands migrating at 127 bp and 316 bp which together are diagnostic for T. murrelli; the isolate was assigned the ISS code: ISS1608 by the International Trichinella Reference Centre. This is the first report of T. murrelli infection in a companion animal.

Cost Of Gain Comparison Between Cattle Finished At Opportunities Farm In South Dakota And Cattle Finished In Kansas, Erik Loe, Robbi Pritchard, Matt Loewe Jan 2006

Cost Of Gain Comparison Between Cattle Finished At Opportunities Farm In South Dakota And Cattle Finished In Kansas, Erik Loe, Robbi Pritchard, Matt Loewe

South Dakota Beef Report, 2006

Cost of gain is an important factor in determining the profit or loss of feeder cattle. For comparison of cost of gain between cattle finished in Southeast South Dakota and cattle finished in Southwest Kansas closeouts of cattle fed at the Opportunities Farm near Lennox, SD were compared with information published by Kansas State University in the monthly Focus on Feedlots. Cattle feeders in the Midwest, including South Dakota, are competitive with cattle feeders in other regions of the United States due to this regions lower ration costs and cost of gain.

Transgenic Non-Human Mammals Producing Fibrinogen In Their Milk, William H. Velander Jan 2006

Transgenic Non-Human Mammals Producing Fibrinogen In Their Milk, William H. Velander

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Patents

A transgenic, non-human mammalian animal is capable of expressing a heterologous gene for human or other recombinant physiologically functional fibrinogen holoprotein or individual subunit chain polypeptides thereof or a modified or fusion fibrinogen in mammary glands of the animals and secreting the expressed product into a body fluid. Methodology employing such a mammal yields recombinant physiologically functional fibrinogens, subunit chain polypeptides thereof, and modified or fusion fibrinogens.

Effect Of Single Vs. Pulsing Doses Of Estradiol 17-Β And Trenbolone Acetate In Finishing Steers Fed A High Concentrate Diet, Sandi L. Parr, Robbi H. Pritchard, Kelly W. Bruns

South Dakota Beef Report, 2006

The effect of implant dosing pattern on anabolic response was evaluated in predominately Angus steers (n=192). Steers, except the control, were implanted with 1 of 3 different implant strategies. Cumulatively all implant treatments received a dose of 24 mg estradiol 17-β (E2) and 120 mg trenbolone acetate (TBA). Dosing patterns were 8 mg E2 and 40 mg TBA given 3 times; 12 mg E2 and 60 mg TBA given 2 times or 24 mg E2 and 120 mg TBA given 1 time. Implanted cattle had heavier body weights, increased average daily gain, and lower feed conversion compared to non-implanted controls. …

Numerical Evaluation Of The Flowfield For A High Fineness Ratio Body With Drag Brakes, Russell M. Cummings, James A. Divine, Thomas R. Yechout, David C. Wetlesen, Joseph J. Kealos

Aerospace Engineering

The Advanced Remote Ground Unattended Sensor (ARGUS) utilizes drag brakes to control its terminal velocity during flight. Computational fluid dynamics predictions were performed at Mach numbers between 0.20 and 0.95 with a full scale model of the ARGUS configuration at conditions to match wind tunnel testing that has been performed at the USAFA Subsonic Wind Tunnel. Configurations consist of brakes fully deployed for a nominal brake fin and a perforated brake fin. Steady-stated computations were performed using the Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model at angles of attack between 0 degrees to 20 degrees at roll angles of 0 degrees and 45 degrees. …

Publications and Research

Exposure to manganese via inhalation has long been known to elicit neurotoxicity in adults, but little is known about possible consequences of exposure via drinking water. In this study, we report results of a cross-sectional investigation of intellectual function in 142 10-year-old children in Araihazar, Bangladesh, who had been consuming tube-well water with an average concentration of 793 μg Mn/L and 3 μg arsenic/L. Children and mothers came to our field clinic, where children received a medical examination in which weight, height, and head circumference were measured. Children’s intellectual function was assessed on tests drawn from the Wechsler Intelligence Scale …
