Intellectual Property: The Practical And Legal Fundamentals, Thomas G. Field Jr Jan 2006

Intellectual Property: The Practical And Legal Fundamentals, Thomas G. Field Jr

Law Faculty Scholarship

Patents, copyrights, trademarks and related interests are known as intellectual property (IP). It has not been long since patents especially were regarded in U.S. courts, and the Supreme Court in particular, as tools of monopolists, and their owners often fared poorly. However, people have come increasingly to view privately funded innovation as critical to national economic well-being and to agree that such innovation cannot occur unless companies that succeed in the marketplace can recoup their research, development and marketing costs. That is a major function of IP, and, particularly within the past dozen years, IP has been seen, both here …

Use Of Ddgs As The Primary Source Of Supplemental Crude Protein In Calf Receiving Diets, Robbi H. Pritchard, Donald L. Boggs Jan 2006

Use Of Ddgs As The Primary Source Of Supplemental Crude Protein In Calf Receiving Diets, Robbi H. Pritchard, Donald L. Boggs

South Dakota Beef Report, 2006

This experiment was designed to determine whether DDGS could be used as the primary source of supplemental crude protein in receiving calf diets. Diets included 45% oat hay and rolled corn. The control diet included 11.8% SBM as the source of supplemental crude protein. The DDGS was fed at 18.9% of diet replacing SBM. There was 1.3% SBM included in the DDGS diets. Diets were formulated for 13% CP and 48 Mcal/cwt NEG. The 47-d experiment began at arrival at the feedlot and involved 294 steer calves (604 lb). Calf gains (2.49 vs 2.54 lb/d) and F/G (5.76 vs 5.61) …

Effect Of Increasing Dietary Concentration Of Dried Distillers Grains Plus Solubles On Phosphorus Balance In Finishing Steers, Clint Benson, Cody Wright, Josh Mccarthick, Robbi Pritchard

South Dakota Beef Report, 2006

Eight crossbred steers (initial BW = 972.2 ± 33.5 lb) were used in a replicated Latin square design to determine the effect of increasing dietary concentrations of dried distillers grains plus solubles (DDGS) on phosphorus (P) balance in finishing steers. The control (CON) diet contained 79% dry rolled corn (DRC), 10% cottonseed hulls, 6% soybean meal (SBM), and 5% mineral supplement (total diet P concentration = 0.26%). In each of the remaining three diets, all of the SBM and a portion of the DRC were removed and replaced with DDGS at 12%, 24%, and 36% of the diet (total diet …

Constructing Comanche Pasts: Public Memory And The Cuerno Verde Rest Area, Colorado City, Colorado, Douglas Seefeldt

Department of History: Faculty Publications

Twenty-five miles south of Pueblo, Colorado, where the southern plains meet the foothills, sits the community of Colorado City. Situated in the shadow of the southern Rockies' Wet Mountains, the Greater Greenhorn Valley is currently home to five thousand people, fifteen hundred of whom live in Colorado City proper. Here, at exit 74 on Interstate 25, stands the pride of the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), the $2.7 million dollar Cuerno Verde Rest Area. The design and landscaping of this rest area set it apart from other such facilities; for example, the Plains Indian-inspired design elements that the architects incorporated …

Texts And Contexts: International Sources And Universalistic Discourse In Australian Teacher Education 1900-1950, Malcolm Vick Jan 2006

Texts And Contexts: International Sources And Universalistic Discourse In Australian Teacher Education 1900-1950, Malcolm Vick

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Australia has a long history of what has been pilloried as ‘cultural cringe’, and of bemoaning its isolation from ‘overseas’ developments. In recent years, the valuing of ideas and practices from elsewhere has been transformed under the rubric of ‘world best practice’ within a global economy and culture, both in political discourse generally, and in a raft of reports on the need for reform of teacher education in particular (see Vick, 2006a). Here, I document overseas borrowings in the form of texts in teacher education during the first half of last century, focusing on teachers colleges in Sydney, Melbourne and …

Physiological Effects On Demography: A Long‐Term Experimental Study Of Testosterone’S Effects On Fitness, W. Reed, M. Clark, P. Parker, S. Raouf, N. Arguedas, D. Monk, E. Snajdr, V. Nolan, E. Ketterson

Biology Department Faculty Works

Understanding physiological and behavioral mechanisms underlying the diversity of observed life‐history strategies is challenging because of difficulties in obtaining long‐term measures of fitness and in relating fitness to these mechanisms. We evaluated effects of experimentally elevated testosterone on male fitness in a population of dark‐eyed juncos studied over nine breeding seasons using a demographic modeling approach. Elevated levels of testosterone decreased survival rates but increased success of producing extra‐pair offspring. Higher overall fitness for testosterone‐treated males was unexpected and led us to consider indirect effects of testosterone on offspring and females. Nest success was similar for testosterone‐treated and control males, …

Vegetative Treatment Systems For Management Of Open Lot Runoff: Review Of Literature, Richard K. Koelsch, Jeffrey C. Lorimer, Kyle R. Mankin Jan 2006

Vegetative Treatment Systems For Management Of Open Lot Runoff: Review Of Literature, Richard K. Koelsch, Jeffrey C. Lorimer, Kyle R. Mankin

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Runoff from open lot livestock systems (beef and dairy) defined as Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO) must be controlled by systems designed and managed to prevent the release of manure-contaminated runoff for storms equal to or less than a 25-yr, 24-h design storm. This performance standard has been attained for open lot systems with some combination of clean water diversion, settling basins, runoff collection ponds, and irrigation systems (baseline system).

An alternative approach is to rely on overland flow and infiltration into cropland with perennial forage or grasses for treatment of open lot runoff. Such vegetative systems have been researched …

Beta 1-Integrins Are Required For Hippocampal Ampa Receptor-Dependent Synaptic Transmission, Synaptic Plasticity, And Working Memory, Chi-Shing Chan, Edwin J. Weeber, Lin Zong, Elaine Fuchs, J David Sweatt, Ronald L. Davis Jan 2006

Beta 1-Integrins Are Required For Hippocampal Ampa Receptor-Dependent Synaptic Transmission, Synaptic Plasticity, And Working Memory, Chi-Shing Chan, Edwin J. Weeber, Lin Zong, Elaine Fuchs, J David Sweatt, Ronald L. Davis

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Integrins comprise a large family of cell adhesion receptors that mediate diverse biological events through cell-cell and cell-extracellular matrix interactions. Recent studies have shown that several integrins are localized to synapses with suggested roles in synaptic plasticity and memory formation. We generated a postnatal forebrain and excitatory neuron-specific knock-out of beta1-integrin in the mouse. Electrophysiological studies demonstrated that these mutants have impaired synaptic transmission through AMPA receptors and diminished NMDA receptor-dependent long-term potentiation. Despite the impairment in hippocampal synaptic transmission, the mutants displayed normal hippocampal-dependent spatial and contextual memory but were impaired in a hippocampal-dependent, nonmatching-to-place working memory task. These …

Rab-10 Is Required For Endocytic Recycling In The Caenorhabditis Elegans Intestine, Carlos Chih-Hsiung Chen, Peter J. Schweinsberg, Shilpa Vashist, Darren P. Mareiniss, Eric J. Lambie, Barth D. Grant

Dartmouth Scholarship

The endocytic pathway of eukaryotes is essential for the internalization and trafficking of macromolecules, fluid, membranes, and membrane proteins. One of the most enigmatic aspects of this process is endocytic recycling, the return of macromolecules (often receptors) and fluid from endosomes to the plasma membrane. We have previously shown that the EH-domain protein RME-1 is a critical regulator of endocytic recycling in worms and mammals. Here we identify the RAB-10 protein as a key regulator of endocytic recycling upstream of RME-1 in polarized epithelial cells of the Caenorhabditis elegans intestine. rab-10 null mutant intestinal cells accumulate abnormally abundant RAB-5-positive early …

Nothing Ought To Astonish Us: Confederate Civilians In The 1864 Shenandoah Valley Campaign, William G. Thomas Iii

Department of History: Faculty Publications

Nancy Emerson lived in Staunton, Virginia, and kept a diary intermittently throughout the Civil War. Emerson was raised in Massachusetts and moved south with her brother, a Lutheran minister, in the late 1850s. They became Confederates, transplanting themselves and driving deep roots into the new soil around them. Emerson intended her diary to be read by her "northern friends, should any of them have the curiosity to read [it] ." She felt increasingly sick with what she thought might be typhoid fever, so she directed that the journal "be forwarded to" her northern friends "at some future time." She wondered …

The Μ-Opioid Receptor Gene And Smoking Initiation And Nicotine Dependence, Lan Zhang, Kenneth S. Kendler, Xianging Chen Jan 2006

The Μ-Opioid Receptor Gene And Smoking Initiation And Nicotine Dependence, Lan Zhang, Kenneth S. Kendler, Xianging Chen

Psychiatry Publications

The gene encoding the mu-opioid receptor (OPRM1) is reported to be associated with a range of substance dependence. Experiments in knockout mice indicate that the mu-opioid receptor may mediate reinforcing effects of nicotine. In humans, opioid antagonist naltrexone may reduce the reinforcing effects of tobacco smoking. Additionally, the OPRM1 gene is located in a region showing linkage to nicotine dependence. The OPRM1 is thus a plausible candidate gene for smoking behavior. To investigate whether OPRM1 contributes to the susceptibility of smoking initiation and nicotine dependence, we genotyped 11 SNPs in the gene for 688 Caucasian subjects of lifetime smokers and …

Prion Gene Haplotypes Of U.S. Cattle, Michael L. Clawson, Michael P. Heaton, John W. Keele, Timothy P. L. Smith, Gregory P. Harhay, William W. Laegreid

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Background: Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) is a fatal neurological disorder characterized by abnormal deposits of a protease-resistant isoform of the prion protein. Characterizing linkage disequilibrium (LD) and haplotype networks within the bovine prion gene (PRNP) is important for 1) testing rare or common PRNP variation for an association with BSE and 2) interpreting any association of PRNP alleles with BSE susceptibility. The objective of this study was to identify polymorphisms and haplotypes within PRNP from the promoter region through the 3'UTR in a diverse sample of U.S. cattle genomes.

Results: A 25.2-kb genomic region containing PRNP was sequenced from 192 …
