Gynecological malignancies such as cancer of the cervix, ovary, endometrium, vulva, and vagina pose a severe global health burden. Although conventionally attributed to genetic mutation, hormonal imbalance, and chronic viral infection, including high-risk human papillomavirus, recent evidence suggests that the human microbiome plays a central role in their pathogenesis and development. This review summarizes existing evidence that microbial dysbiosis, specifically the depletion of beneficial Lactobacillus species and overrepresentation of anaerobic organisms such as Fusobacterium, Atopobium, and Sneathia, is implicated in carcinogenesis pathways. These include chronic inflammation, immune modulation, loss of epithelial barrier integrity, microbial metabolite toxicity, and estrogen metabolism by …

An Analysis And Performance Guide Of Two Published Versions Of Jenni Brandon's Chansons De La Nature Pour La Clarinette, Joanne Lundahl Apr 2026

An Analysis And Performance Guide Of Two Published Versions Of Jenni Brandon's Chansons De La Nature Pour La Clarinette, Joanne Lundahl

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Jenni Brandon’s Chansons de la nature pour la clarinette presents the clarinet as a narrating voice, guiding listeners through seven movements inspired by Aesop’s fables as retold by Jean de La Fontaine. This document traces the work’s evolution from its original publication for unaccompanied clarinet to its later adaptation for clarinet and digital delay pedal, examining the influences that shaped the piece and the compositional traits that define Brandon’s style, including her use of motives, range, meter, and formal design. Drawing on interviews with Brandon and clarinetist Christopher Mothersole, it outlines the history of both versions and establishes a foundation …

Dixie Knights, Dissonance And Contradictions, Isaiah Kennedy Apr 2026

Dixie Knights, Dissonance And Contradictions, Isaiah Kennedy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

My thesis work, Dixie Knights , Dissonance and Contradictions uses painting, ceramics, illustration, and installation to ask, “What does it mean to be Southern in contemporary times?” Using Willie Morris’s opening statements in The Southern Album, it is grappled through a post-digital lens. The works use collaged quilt patterns, pixelized video game references, surreal interior/exterior spaces, art historical dialogue and auto-biographical details. These motifs explore the complexities of how Southerness is impacted by class, history, race, occupation, being in a state of constant cognitive dissonance, and cultural synthesis that occurs when different moments of influence come together to create new …

Does The Existence Of Multiple Color Variants Aid In Predator Avoidance For A Common Frog In Southwestern Ohio?, Adelyn Elizabeth Hughes Apr 2026

Does The Existence Of Multiple Color Variants Aid In Predator Avoidance For A Common Frog In Southwestern Ohio?, Adelyn Elizabeth Hughes

Honors Theses

Cryptic coloration allows animals to blend in effectively to their backgrounds, reducing the probability of predator detection. Blanchard’s Cricket Frog (Acris blanchardi), is a small, diurnally active frog that can be found across the Midwestern United States. This species exhibits a color polymorphism, with some individuals entirely brown in dorsal coloration, while others have a dorsal stripe that is typically green in coloration. Whether these different colors influence this species ability to blend in better across natural background types, remains unknown. In this study, I investigated whether these different color patterns aid in camouflage and predator avoidance. To …

The Effect Of The Environment On Perceived Distance, Elijah Turner Apr 2026

The Effect Of The Environment On Perceived Distance, Elijah Turner

Honors Theses

Despite our certainty that we experience the world as it really is, humans' perception of the world is not accurate in its entirety. People’s biases play a significant role in their perception of their environments. Researchers have sought to determine exactly how and why human biases impact perceptions, focusing on how biases related to a target (person, animal, object, etc.) impact people’s perception of said target, more specifically, the perceived distance to that target. This is important in understanding situations where, in order to interact with (or avoid) a target person, one must perceive the physical distance between oneself and …

The Supreme Court Vs. Federal Prosecutors, Scott Ingram Apr 2026

The Supreme Court Vs. Federal Prosecutors, Scott Ingram

Et Cetera

For the past forty years, the United States Supreme Court and federal prosecutors have waged an ongoing battle over statutory interpretation. As federal prosecutors have applied broad statutory interpretations to a variety of offenses, the Supreme Court, in a rare show of unanimity, have pushed back by interpreting the statutes narrowly. Throughout this process, the Supreme Court has employed a variety of rationales to support the narrow interpretations. Beginning with federalism concerns, the Court has more recently turned to fears about arbitrary and politically-motivated prosecutions. This article traces the evolution of this battle and concludes with insights about its future …

Distilled Identities: The History And Gender Politics Of The Perfume Industry, Emma Shaffer Apr 2026

Distilled Identities: The History And Gender Politics Of The Perfume Industry, Emma Shaffer

Honors Projects

This paper analyzes the use of gendered perfume marketing in the West. Drawing upon the work of Joe Schwartz, Sarah Evrett, and others, I examine the history of this phenomenon and the politics keeping the perfume market segregated by gender. How long has perfume existed? Has it always been so strict on who wears what fragrance? My results found that perfume has only been gendered since the Victorian era, dispelling the myth that gendered fragrance is the only way to market perfume. However, I also found that when gender neutral fragrances have been introduced, they have not had much staying …

Crafting The Narrative: A Look At Long-Form Storytelling Through The Art Of Quilling, Jaycee R. Lundell Apr 2026

Crafting The Narrative: A Look At Long-Form Storytelling Through The Art Of Quilling, Jaycee R. Lundell

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis explores the journeys of four contemporary quilling artists and their works. It dives into the creative process of conducting the interviews, capturing the footage, and making the documentary. The documentary also explores the history of quilling including its resurgence in the 1980s and the complicated process of navigating the declining numbers of the International Quilling Guild while the craft spreads across the internet, potentially losing its rich history and standards of excellence. Since quilling is a lesser known art, this thesis is also an attempt to spread the knowledge of the craft since there are very few scholarly …

Propaganda In America How To Recognize And Defend Against It, Chae Balistreri Apr 2026

Propaganda In America How To Recognize And Defend Against It, Chae Balistreri

Global Insight

Corporations and governments use modern propaganda techniques to influence and manipulate the public, incurring social and environmental consequences which are compounding over time. This paper provides both historical and modern examples of propaganda, then highlights key issues that arise as a byproduct, such as planned obsolescence, astroturfing, and the internet filter bubble. Companies like Google and Facebook use proprietary algorithms to shape the internet as well as their users’ minds through dopamine-driven feedback loops. The effects of a consumer driven culture spill over into the environment, with plastic pollution and e-waste littering the shores of distant countries. This paper details …

Social Hierarchy And Purity Of Blood In New Spain, Paula Currie Apr 2026

Social Hierarchy And Purity Of Blood In New Spain, Paula Currie

Global Insight

Racial inequality, white superiority, and socialized economic poverty are issues currently affecting the world. These problems plaguing our nation seem hopeless with no apparent end in sight. All these issues have been repeated time and again throughout history. When the Spanish colonized the New World, they brought with them an ideology known as limpieza de sangre or purity of blood. This rigid ideology was based on the premise of White Spanish superiority, which was imposed upon the people of New Spain. Limpieza de sangre influenced nobility, socio-economic racial hierarchy, life, and art in New Spain. To fully understand the effects …

Regulating The Animal Testing Industry, Preston Gerst Apr 2026

Regulating The Animal Testing Industry, Preston Gerst

Global Insight

Animal testing has been a customary practice in numerous civilizations throughout human history. Humanity tends to want to understand the true nature of our physiology as a whole, and animals have been beneficial to help satisfy this curiosity. Yet ethically speaking, scientists argue for the protection of the rights of humans, while many fail to do so for our natural counterparts, animals. Current standards of the industry bring up concern for the ethical treatment of animals; additionally, many of the standards that exist are outdated and not systematized throughout the scientific world. Furthermore, new scientific developments can possibly allow for …

Religion For The Un-Religious: The Nazis’ Use Of Religion Within The Third Reich, Shaun Theewis Apr 2026

Religion For The Un-Religious: The Nazis’ Use Of Religion Within The Third Reich, Shaun Theewis

Honors Theses

Alfred Rosenberg was born in Revel, Estonia. After moving to Munich in 1918, he became one of the founding members of the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei [National-Socialist German Workers Party], NSDAP. In 1930, Rosenberg wrote one of his most influential publications, Der Mythus des 20. Jahrhunderts [The Myth of the 20th Century], which challenges the idea of organized religion. In this three part publication, Rosenberg established values based in German ethnonationalism, which would later amalgamate into a new religion based on neopaganist ideals. Nazi-era neopaganism is a religion rooted in blood, using the history of the Germanic and Nordic people to …

Heavy Metal, Heavy Costs: Soil Copper Contamination Undermines Bee Communities In Urban Agriculture, Penelope Fisher Apr 2026

Heavy Metal, Heavy Costs: Soil Copper Contamination Undermines Bee Communities In Urban Agriculture, Penelope Fisher

Honors Theses

As city populations grow, the need for fresh produce in cities to feed people also grows. One such growing urban environment is Dayton, Ohio, which has begun to implement measures aiming to limit the hunger experienced by underserved individuals in the city. According to The Dayton Food Bank, in Montgomery County alone 14.2% of individuals living in the county experience food insecurity, a majority of whom are children. Urban farming has proven to be a lucrative solution to some of these issues. However, these farms are often established in areas where the soil is degraded due to previous land use, …

Evaluating Pre-Task Versus Post-Task Reinforcer Choice: A Replication And Extension Of Blackman (2023), Evan M. Lipsky Apr 2026

Evaluating Pre-Task Versus Post-Task Reinforcer Choice: A Replication And Extension Of Blackman (2023), Evan M. Lipsky

Thesis Projects

Discrete trial training (DTT) is an individualized method of instruction that is foundational to the clinical practice of Applied Behavior Analysis. When presenting choices for reinforcement during a DTT session, there appear to be two plausible options for when the client may choose: either before task completion or after task completion. The overall conclusion drawn by previous researchers was that the relative effectiveness of either condition may be idiosyncratic. The purpose of this present study was to replicate and extend Blackman (2023) teaching only new skill acquisition targets, using non-edible tangible reinforcers, and including preassessment data for all participants. Two …

Microbial Composition In The Context Of Rising Temperatures And Chytrid Infection, Emma G. Thompson Apr 2026

Microbial Composition In The Context Of Rising Temperatures And Chytrid Infection, Emma G. Thompson

Theses

Chytrid fungi, Bd (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis) and Bsal (Batrachochytrium salamandivorans), are one of the largest threats to amphibian populations worldwide. Research has shown that the amphibian's skin microbiome can inhibit Bd/Bsal infection, but that microbial composition can vary drastically with host and environmental factors. In addition, habitat-wide mitigation methods that capitalize on the thermal mismatch between Bd/Bsal and their hosts (e.g., warming the host or environment) have been proposed to combat infection. These methods have proven successful so far, but do not consider the indirect effects that warming has on the microbiome. Synthetic microbial communities of ten core members to simulate …

Data were transformed to normality and analyzed with Pearson correlation coefficients and independent t-test correcting for multiple comparisons. Results Of the 69 interested people, 50 …

The Griffin Principle: Defining And Deterring Election Contest Gamesmanship, Samuel Davis Apr 2026

The Griffin Principle: Defining And Deterring Election Contest Gamesmanship, Samuel Davis

Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy

Through the lens of a protracted battle over a seat on the North Carolina Supreme Court in 2024, this Article considers the problem of election contest gamesmanship: the manipulation of the procedures states use to resolve post-election disputes in an effort to subvert the democratic results of an election. This Article illustrates how election contest gamesmanship problematizes basic assumptions of federal voting rights doctrines, exploiting the traditional deference afforded to the operation of state election administration procedures to evade federal judicial scrutiny and advance strictly partisan ends. The result is a unique and pernicious threat to the fair administration of …

The Ninth Amendment And Natural Rights/Social Compact Theory: A Defense Of Fundamental Unenumerated Constitutional Rights In The Wake Of Dobbs, Joseph R. Guerra Apr 2026

The Ninth Amendment And Natural Rights/Social Compact Theory: A Defense Of Fundamental Unenumerated Constitutional Rights In The Wake Of Dobbs, Joseph R. Guerra

Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy

In ruling that the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment does not protect a right to an abortion, the Supreme Court's decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization relied on reasoning that casts serious doubt on the continued validity of other unenumerated constitutional rights. According to Dobbs, unenumerated rights cannot be recognized unless they are deeply rooted in this Nation's history and traditions, and have long enjoyed legal protection. In ruling that a right to abortion failed this test, the Court asserted that its decision did not undermine other previously recognized unenumerated rights, such as rights to …

The Impact Of Normothermic Regional Perfusion Compared With Cold Storage On Warm Ischemia Time In Donation After Circulatory Death Organ Transplantation: A Scoping Review, Chris Turner Apr 2026

The Impact Of Normothermic Regional Perfusion Compared With Cold Storage On Warm Ischemia Time In Donation After Circulatory Death Organ Transplantation: A Scoping Review, Chris Turner

Student Works

ABSTRACT

2.Structured summary:

Background: Donation after circulatory death (DCD) has expanded the donor pool but introduces an inevitable period of warm ischemia that threatens graft viability. Preservation techniques such as normothermic regional perfusion (NRP) and static cold storage (SCS) aim to minimize this injury and improve transplant outcomes.

Objective: This scoping review identifies and synthesizes published evidence comparing NRP with SCS in DCD organ transplantation, focusing on their respective effects on warm ischemia time, graft function, and early post‑transplant outcomes.

Methods: Following the PRISMA‑ScR framework [23], searches were conducted in MEDLINE, PubMed, Embase, and Scopus for English‑language studies involving DCD …

The Lost Reader: Temptation, Free Will, And Morality In Paradise Lost And Undertale, Serena Hope Labello Apr 2026

The Lost Reader: Temptation, Free Will, And Morality In Paradise Lost And Undertale, Serena Hope Labello

Honors Theses

This paper demonstrates that video games expand on a reader’s literary experience and should be characterized as literary artifacts. My thesis research project explores free will and temptation as originally reflected in John Milton’s epic, Paradise Lost, and in Undertale, a 2015 video game where players change the trajectory of the game with their use of free will. Critics of both texts have commented on how the structure of the epic poem and the game place the reader or player in a position to make moral choices. Stanley Fish’s critique of Paradise Lost claims that the reader will fall to …
