Engaging Students In The L2 Reading Process, Marcia L. Wilbur Mar 2006

Engaging Students In The L2 Reading Process, Marcia L. Wilbur

Dimensions

This article will consider a necessary departure from more traditional paradigms, where speaking skills are the primary focus and in which reading is viewed as something intermediate or advanced learners do with authentic literature once they have mastered a particular level of grammatical structures. Instead, reading will be considered as an important component of L2 instruction that, when included along side other input modes, can enrich students’ second language acquisition. Concepts and strategies on which to build classroom practices as well as practical suggestions for implementing pre-, during-, and post-reading activities are included. Considerations that place learners at the center …

An Exploration Of Reflective Thought Based On Reaction, Relevance, And Responsibility Using The Tools Of Drama, Collage, And Personal Narrative With Preservice Teachers, Carol Jo Brazo

Faculty Publications - College of Education

This study examined the usefulness of focused reflection in helping preservice teachers develop their vision for professional practice. Sixteen students progressed through learning events during the first ha(f of their Master of Arts in Teaching program utilizing four central categories of professional identity, reaction (emotional responses), relevance (cognitive responses), and responsibility (psychomotor responses). Students utilized the tools of drama, collage, and personal narrative. Written reflections followed each learning event. Respondents were encouraged to tie learning events to theory and to deconstruct their experiences. Reflections were structured usingprofessionalzdentz(y, reaction, relevance, and responsibiliry. Evidence from the study revealed that professional identity evolved …

Solutions Through Science: Reducing Damage Caused By Vultures Mar 2006

Solutions Through Science: Reducing Damage Caused By Vultures

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Vultures play an important role in ecosystems by cleaning up animal carcasses, but vultures also cause problems in both rural and urban settings. In recent years, vulture populations have increased as these adaptable birds have adjusted to higher levels of human activity. As a result, the birds are coming into ever more conflict with people.

Vultures often damage residential and business property. Their droppings can kill trees and create unsanitary and unsafe working conditions at power plants, refineries, and communication towers. Their aggressiveness unsettles park users and homeowners. Vultures harass and kill livestock. In flight, they can be a danger …

2005-06 Christmas Bird Counts In Nebraska Mar 2006

2005-06 Christmas Bird Counts In Nebraska

Nebraska Bird Review

For the first time this year, two additional counts, Ames and Harrison Sioux Counties, were reported, bringing our total to 14 counts. The all-time high numbers reached for several species this year need to be regarded in light of that fact. We tend now to have more counts, more counters, and more hours spent counting than ever before. While this is a good thing, it is useful to remember that counting more birds does not in this case mean that there are necessarily more birds present. A look at the effort data, such as number of birds per party hour, …

Recent Changes In Winter Bird Numbers At Lincoln, Nebraska, Paul A. Johnsgard

Nebraska Bird Review

In 1998 I summarized historic Christmas Bird Count data for Lincoln and Scottsbluff (Johnsgard, 1998), since these two sites provide the longest continuous count records for any Nebraska locations. Eight more years of data have since accumulated, during which there has been an increasing awareness of the perceived effects of global warming (Inkley, 2004) on bird populations. The purpose of this paper is to compare the data for the past eight years (1998-2005) with earlier counts for Lincoln, two of which were first performed in the early 1900's, but which have been conducted in unbroken sequence since 1947. These data, …

Observations Of Interactions Between Swift Fox And American Badger [Notes], David E. Ausband, Elizabeth A. Ausband Mar 2006

Observations Of Interactions Between Swift Fox And American Badger [Notes], David E. Ausband, Elizabeth A. Ausband

The Prairie Naturalist

Swift fox (Vulpes velox) and American badger (Taxidea taxus) are sympatric inhabitants of some prairie regions in North America. Although the American badger has been found to prey on swift fox, (Carbyn et al. 1994, Ausband 2005) we report three observations of species interactions made during the summer of 2004 that did not involve predation by the American badger. All three observations are from a reintroduced population of swift fox and occurred on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, Glacier County, Montana. The Blackfeet Tribe and Defenders of Wildlife reintroduced 123 captive-reared swift fox from 1998 to 2002 …

Estimates Of Breeding Bird Populations In The Sheyenne National Grassland, North Dakota, Mary Ann Cunningham, Douglas Johnson, Daniel N. Svingen Mar 2006

Estimates Of Breeding Bird Populations In The Sheyenne National Grassland, North Dakota, Mary Ann Cunningham, Douglas Johnson, Daniel N. Svingen

The Prairie Naturalist

We conducted a two-year survey of breeding birds in the Sheyenne National Grassland, North Dakota, to estimate total populations of breeding birds. The Grassland is of interest because it provides wildlife habitat and recreational birding opportunities. Indicated breeding pairs were counted on 100-m wide belt transects during morning surveys from late May to early July in 2002 and 2003. We surveyed approximately 6 to 7% of the Grassland each year. The most abundant species in both years were grasshopper sparrow (Ammodramus savannarum), red-winged blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus), claycolored sparrow (Spizella pallida), Savannah sparrow (Passerculus …

Journal of Catholic Education

Sister M. Madeleva Wolff, C.S.C., teacher, essayist, poet, and college administrator, through her creative ability and innovative practices made possible major contributions to Catholic education in her lifetime. Without her strong personality and boundless energy, many of her dreams for an ideal college curriculum would not have come to fruition. Her most significant legacy, the Graduate School of Theology, afforded for the first time the opportunity for the laity and religious women to study theology at the graduate level. She served as president of St. Mary’s College, Notre Dame, Indiana, from 1934 to 1961.

Moving From Separate Subject To Interdisciplinary 1 Teaching: The Complexity Of Change In A Preservice Teacher K-1 Early Field Experience, Janet C. Richards, Kim T. Shea Mar 2006

Moving From Separate Subject To Interdisciplinary 1 Teaching: The Complexity Of Change In A Preservice Teacher K-1 Early Field Experience, Janet C. Richards, Kim T. Shea

The Qualitative Report

This phenomenological inquiry looked at 28 preservice teachers as they participated in a field-based curricula restructuring initiative that connected the disciplines of creative arts, science, and reading. The preservice teachers offered weekly interdisciplinary lessons to kindergarten and first grade students . A survey, teaching cases, and a group exit interview informed the study. Throughout most of the semester, the preservice teachers struggled with procedural and pedagogical content knowledge, concerns directly related to effective teaching. By the end of the semester, they felt comfortable teaching interdisciplinary lessons. Results suggest that preservice teacher curricular restructuring efforts are complex and that teacher educators …

Laying The Foundation For A New Work On The Pseudo-Virgilian Culex, Lisa St. Louis

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her paper "Laying the Foundation for a New Work on the Pseudo-Virgilian Culex," Lisa St. Louis discusses work undertaken on a prolegomenon to a new edition of the pseudo-Virgilian poem Culex. Fifty manuscripts are selected according to criteria such as ownership, geographical area or membership in a group defined by previous scholars. The catalogue of manuscripts is carefully structured in order to include all information needed to locate a given manuscript and trace its history. Manuscripts are collated in detail and their variant readings are entered into Adain software which is designed to determine the relationship between manuscripts. The …

Pollen Drift And The Bystanding Farmer: Harmonizing Patent Law And Common Law On The Technological Frontier, Paul J. Heald, James C. Smith Mar 2006

Pollen Drift And The Bystanding Farmer: Harmonizing Patent Law And Common Law On The Technological Frontier, Paul J. Heald, James C. Smith

Popular Media

Patent law provides an impressive laundry list of defenses available to farmers who are the victims of unwanted pollen drift. The common law works hand-in-hand with patent law to ensure that a farmer’s choices are respected. Strong arguments can be made that positive economic relief should be afforded to farmers who can show the value of their crop has been diminished due to pollen drift. GMO pollen drift is a new, high-tech problem, but well-established principles of federal and state law appear prepared to offer viable low-tech solutions.

Reaction Of Sorghum Lines Genetically Modified For Reduced Lignin Content To Infection By Fusarium And Alternaria Spp., Deanna L. Funnell, Jeffrey F. Pedersen Mar 2006

Reaction Of Sorghum Lines Genetically Modified For Reduced Lignin Content To Infection By Fusarium And Alternaria Spp., Deanna L. Funnell, Jeffrey F. Pedersen

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Two genes conferring the brown midrib (bmr) trait had been backcrossed into six elite sorghum lines, resulting in reduced lignin in the bmr lines when compared with the wild-type parent. Seed and leaf tissue from field-grown plants, planted at two locations, were screened for Alternariu spp. and Fusarium spp. on semi-selective media. The results suggest that bmr lines do not have increased susceptibility to colonization by Alternariu spp. However, significantly fewer colonies of Fusarium spp., including Fusarium moniliforme, were recovered from seed of reduced lignin lines from two genetic backgrounds. That the bmr trait in some genetic backgrounds might …

Disturbance-Mediated Trophic Interactions And Plant Performance, Bret D. Elderd Mar 2006

Disturbance-Mediated Trophic Interactions And Plant Performance, Bret D. Elderd

Faculty Publications

Disturbances, such as flooding, play important roles in determining community structure. Most studies of disturbances focus on the direct effects and, hence, the indirect effects of disturbances are poorly understood. Within terrestrial riparian areas, annual flooding leads to differences in the arthropod community as compared to non-flooded areas. In turn, these differences are likely to alter the survival, growth, and reproduction of plant species via an indirect effect of flooding (i.e., changes in herbivory patterns). To test for such effects, an experiment was conducted wherein arthropod predators and herbivores were excluded from plots in flooded and non-flooded areas and the …

Rapid Evolution Of A Recently Retroposed Transcription Factor Yy2 In Mammalian Genomes, Chunqing Luo, Xiaochen Lu, Lisa Stubbs, Joomyeong Kim Mar 2006

Rapid Evolution Of A Recently Retroposed Transcription Factor Yy2 In Mammalian Genomes, Chunqing Luo, Xiaochen Lu, Lisa Stubbs, Joomyeong Kim

Faculty Publications

YY2 was originally identified due to its unusual similarity to the evolutionarily well-conserved zinc finger gene YY1. In this study, we have determined the evolutionary origin and conservation of YY2 using comparative genomic approaches. Our results indicate that YY2 is a retroposed copy of YY1 that has been inserted into another gene locus named Mbtps2 (membrane-bound transcription factor protease site 2). This retroposition is estimated to have occurred after the divergence of placental mammals from other vertebrates based on the detection of YY2 only in the placental mammals. The N- and C-terminal regions of YY2 have evolved under different selection …
