Supporting The Essential Elements With Cd-Rom Storybooks, Cathy J. Pearman, Shirley Lefever-Davis
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
CD-ROM storybooks can support the development of the five essential elements of reading instruction identified by The National Reading Panel: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Specific features inherent in these texts, audio pronunciation of text, embedded vocabulary definitions and animated graphics can be used to support readers' development of various reading skills. In addition, the International Society for Technology in Education states that computer technology should be used with young children to build their technological skill and comfort level. The use of CD-ROM storybooks for instruction in the five essential elements is an effective means of incorporating technology …
Drawing Religious And Political Boundaries: Constitutional Anti-Sorting Principles , Adam M. Samaha
Drawing Religious And Political Boundaries: Constitutional Anti-Sorting Principles , Adam M. Samaha
The University of Chicago Law School Record
Anti-sorting – the principle that argues against boundaries that define both religious and political borders – currently rests on two cases decided by the Supreme Court. Professor Samaha traces the history of religious sorting policies and argues that there are two constitutional hooks for anti-sorting: a combination of the First and Fourteenth amendments, which prevent exclusion by local governments.

A Citizen’s Guide to the Nevada Test Site. The Nevada Test Site is located approximately 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas and encompasses about 1350 square miles of Nevada desert, in the Yucca FlatsRegion. The NTS was used for nuclear weapons testing from 1951 through 1992 including both above ground testing and below ground shots.
This research was completed money allocated during Round 5 of the Citizens’ Monitoring and Technical Assessment Fund (MTA Fund). Clark University was named conservator of these works.

Animal Carcinogenicity Studies: Implications For The Reach System, Andrew Knight, Jarrod Bailey, Jonathan Balcombe
Experimentation Collection
The 2001 European Commission proposal for the Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals (REACH) aims to improve public and environmental health by assessing the toxicity of, and restricting exposure to, potentially toxic chemicals. The greatest benefits are expected to accrue from decreased cancer incidences. Hence the accurate identification of chemical carcinogens must be a top priority for the REACH system. Due to a paucity of human clinical data, the identification of potential human carcinogens has conventionally relied on animal tests. However, our survey of the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) toxic chemicals database revealed that, for a majority of the …

Eugenicism: The Construction Of Queer Space In The Works Of Octavia Butler And Samuel Delany, Freda Fair
Eugenicism: The Construction Of Queer Space In The Works Of Octavia Butler And Samuel Delany, Freda Fair
American Studies Honors Projects
Late nineteenth century and early twentieth century United States eugenic history is saturated with nature-nurture debates concerning human character and social development in relation to the institutionalization and popularization of genetics and biology. By interrogating eugenic testing and experimentation on those identified as sexual, racial, and national others this work will utilize eugenicism, an analytical and discursive tool developed from the history of U.S. eugenics, to perform close readings of works by Octavia Butler and Samuel Delany. As eugenics constructs subjects by imagining what they will contribute to a fitter future society, science fiction, as genre, (re)imagines the world that …

Mixed Low-Level Radioactive And Hazardous Waste Disposal Facilities, Heart Of America Northwest, John R. Brodeur
Heart of America Northwest
Candidate sites for disposal of USDOE’s Mixed Wastes (MW), must be judged according to their hydrogeology over an appropriate time frame: up to 10,000 years. US Department of Energy (USDOE) has identified three options for disposal of vast quantities of Mixed Waste. Those three options include the Hanford Nuclear Reservation (alongside the Columbia River in Washington), Nevada Test Site (NTS) and at a private facility in Clive, Utah run by Envirocare of Utah (whose parent company was recently renamed “EnviroSolutions”). The quantities of wastes that might be added to the soils at these sites are enormous.1 All three are currently …

Review Of Polarity In Plants, Annual Plant Reviews, Volume 12, Steven D. Harris
Review Of Polarity In Plants, Annual Plant Reviews, Volume 12, Steven D. Harris
Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications
Polarity is a fundamental property of all cells. The molecular mechanisms that underlies the establishment and maintenance of cellular polarity have been intensively studied in animal cells and yeast-like fungi. These studies reveal an emerging general principle whereby positional information is relayed to the cytoskeleton and other morphogenetic functions by conserved signaling pathways. Comparatively less attention has been directed toward the molecular basis of polarized growth in plant cells and tissues. This volume, Polarity in Plants, provides a comprehensive review of the topic that should satisfy both hardcore aficionados of plant cell and developmental biology as well as curious investigators …

Of Shining Knights And Cunning Pettifoggers: The Symbolic World Of The Model Rules Of Professional Conduct, Nelson P. Miller, Joan Vestrand
Dickinson Law Review (1908-2003)
This article offers a coherent ethical perspective on the American Bar Association (ABA) Model Rules of Professional Conduct. The legal profession bases its Model Rules on assumptions about lawyers, their clients and adversaries, the authority to which lawyers appeal, and the economy in which they practice. Citing in support every Model Rule, this article exposes the rich symbolic assumptions underlying the Rules and concludes that it is through this symbolic world that the Model Rules are best understood. This article includes a description of the normative economy on which the symbolic world of the Model Rules is based.

We Are Family: Using Diverse Family Structure With Children, Deanna Peterschick Gilmore, Kari Bell
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
The structure of the American family has changed over the years. Although the traditional father, mother, child structure still dominates, other family patterns are emerging. In this article the authors present 1) current statistics relating to diverse family structures, 2) reasons for using diverse family structure literature with children, 3) recommendations of books to read depicting the various family structures such as: children of divorced parents, children in stepfamilies/blended families, children of adoption, children of international adoption, children of gay and lesbian parents and children in all kinds of families. The authors also include a list of suggested reading for …

Montessori Education And Its Scientific Basis, Carolyn P. Edwards
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
Review of: Angeline Stoll Lillard, Montessori: The Science Behind the Genius, Oxford University Press, 2005.
Montessori education is the subject of Angeline Lillard’s book. Montessori, a brilliant figure who was Italy’s first woman physician, created an approach that reflected a late 19th century vision of mental development and theoretical kinship with the great European progressive educational philosophers, Jean-Jacque Rousseau, Johann Pestalozzi and Fredrich Froebel (Edwards, 2002 and Edwards, 2003). The many parallels between her ideas and those of the American progressive, John Dewey, her contemporary, are due to the fact that their ideas grew out of shared theoretical roots …
