Biology Articles and Papers
Background
The best studied insect-symbiont system is that of aphids and their primary bacterial endosymbiont Buchnera aphidicola. Buchnera inhabits specialized host cells called bacteriocytes, provides nutrients to the aphid and has co-speciated with its aphid hosts for the past 150 million years. We have used a single microarray to examine gene expression in the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum, and its resident Buchnera. Very little is known of gene expression in aphids, few studies have examined gene expression in Buchnera, and no study has examined simultaneously the expression profiles of a host and its symbiont. Expression profiling …

Why The Defense Of Marriage Act Is Not (Yet?) Unconstitutional: Lawrence, Full Faith And Credit, And The Many Societal Actors That Determine What The Constitution Requires, Mark D. Rosen
All Faculty Scholarship
This Article argues that the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is not unconstitutional - at least not yet. DOMA provides that States need not recognize same-sex marriages (or judgments in connection with such marriages) performed in sister States. The Article first shows that the Supreme Court's recent opinion in Lawrence v. Texas, which struck down as unconstitutional state laws that criminalized sodomy, has not invalidated the DOMA. Lawrence is best understood as having left undecided the constitutional status of same-sex marriage, and the Article explains the benefits of the Court's having held back its constitutional judgment on this subject at …

Health Risks Of Ionizing Radiation: An Overview Of Epidemiological Studies, Clark University, Abel Russ, Casey Burns, Seth Tuler, Octavia Taylor
Clark University
A Report by the Community-Based Hazard Management Program, George Perkins Marsh Institute, Clark University.
The health risks of exposure to low levels of ionizing radiation are disputed within the scientific community. Risks associated with exposure to high levels of radiation are widely accepted and well documented based primarily on the studies of the atomic bomb survivors in Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Some feel that the best way to estimate risk for low- level exposures is to extrapolate from higher doses, although there is some clear evidence of low-dose risk. In this overview we have attempted to give an unbiased summary of …

Industry Leaders Debate Big Pharma R&D (Too Little Hope?) And Stem Cell Research (Too Much Hype?), Knowledge@Smu
Industry Leaders Debate Big Pharma R&D (Too Little Hope?) And Stem Cell Research (Too Much Hype?), Knowledge@Smu
Knowledge@SMU
Different points on the research spectrum were under the microscope at the Wharton Health Care Business Conference last month as two panels of biotech, pharmaceutical and investment leaders discussed the state of R&D among big pharmaceuticals and the progress of stem cell research. While disappointing results in both sectors have dominated the news lately, panelists at each session also noted some promising developments -- and causes for optimism -- in their respective fields.

Motivational Techniques For At Risk Students In An Online Secondary Environment, Adria D. Trembly
Motivational Techniques For At Risk Students In An Online Secondary Environment, Adria D. Trembly
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
This applied project addresses the issues related to at risk youth turning to the Internet as a means to obtain their high school diplomas. A review of literature examines the pros and cons of the virtual high schools, motivational theory, how to apply motivational techniques to the online setting, and methods that can be employed by online instructors to increase learner motivation and participation. The review results in a presentation by the author to fellow online instructors at the Fort Washakie Virtual High School with suggestions on how the teacher can increase the motivation of the student body who is …
Bringing The Market To Life: Screen Aesthetics And The Epistemic Consumption Object, Detlev Zwick, Nikhilesh Dholakia
Bringing The Market To Life: Screen Aesthetics And The Epistemic Consumption Object, Detlev Zwick, Nikhilesh Dholakia
College of Business Faculty Publications
This article argues that the new ‘visuality’ (Schroeder, 2002) of the Internet transforms the stock market into an epistemic consumption object. The aesthetics of the screen turn the market into an interactive and response-present surface representation. On the computer screen, the market becomes an object of constant movement and variation, changing direction and altering appearance at any time. Following Knorr Cetina (1997, 2002b) we argue that the visual logic of the screen ‘opens up’ the market ontologically. The ontological liquidity of the market-on-screen simulates the indefiniteness of other life forms. We suggest that the continuing fascination with online investing is …

Different Neural Substrates Mediate Cocaine Seeking After Abstinence Versus Extinction Training: A Critical Role For The Dorsolateral Caudate-Putamen, Rita A. Fuchs, R. Kyle Branham, Ronald E. See
MUSC Faculty Journal Articles
Cue-induced reinstatement of extinguished drug seeking is a preclinical model of relapse. However, relapse typically occurs after abstinence rather than explicit extinction training. We show that inactivation of the dorsolateral caudate–putamen, but not other structures previously implicated in reinstatement, attenuates cocaine seeking after abstinence. This suggests that there is limited overlap in the substrates of cocaine seeking after abstinence versus extinction, and that habit learning exerts greater control over drug seeking than regions implicated in stimulus–reward associations.

MUSC Faculty Journal Articles
Degeneration of the spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) of the auditory nerve occurs with age and in response to acoustic injury. Histopathological observations suggest that the neural degeneration often begins with an excitotoxic process affecting the afferent dendrites under the inner hair cells (IHCs), however, little is known about the sequence of cellular or molecular events mediating this excitotoxicity. Nuclear factor κB (NFκB) is a transcription factor involved in regulating inflammatory responses and apoptosis in many cell types. NFκB is also associated with intracellular calcium regulation, an important factor in neuronal excitotoxicity. Here, we provide evidence that NFκB can play a …
