Temperature Tolerance In Crustaceans: Critical Temperatures And The Heart, Lindsay Haupt (Murray-Miller) Apr 2006

Temperature Tolerance In Crustaceans: Critical Temperatures And The Heart, Lindsay Haupt (Murray-Miller)

All Theses And Dissertations

At certain upper and lower threshold temperatures (critical temperatures (Tc) crustaceans switch to anaerobic metabolism despite sufficient oxygen availability in the environment. I tested the hypothesis that failure of the heart at critical temperatures leads to insufficient oxygen delivery and subsequent anaerobiosis in peripheral tissues.

I exposed rock crabs, Cancer irroratus, as whole animals, and their buffer-perfused semi-isolated hearts to a progressive temperature increase, while monitoring heart rate and lactate accumulation. The whole animals heart rate increased with temperature following a Q10 of 2.8. An abrupt decline in heart rate occurred at 25°C and lactate accumulation occurred between …

Detector Dogs And Probable Cause, Richard E. Myers Mar 2006

Detector Dogs And Probable Cause, Richard E. Myers

ExpressO

In this Article, Professor Myers argues that an alert, even by a well-trained dog with an excellent track record in the field, cannot by itself constitute probable cause to search. By using a Bayesian analysis of the value of dog alerts, he demonstrates that additional evidence is needed before probable cause exists. He shows why police won’t make changes to their use of dogs without outside prodding, and explores who might do so. The article makes some suggestions that, if adopted, will improve the courts’ approach to detector dog technologies, allowing them to better strike the balance between the competing …

Finding A Ceiling In A Circular Room: Locke V. Davey, Federalism, And Religious Neutrality, Jesse R. Merriam Mar 2006

Finding A Ceiling In A Circular Room: Locke V. Davey, Federalism, And Religious Neutrality, Jesse R. Merriam

ExpressO

The text of the U.S. Constitution clearly distinguishes religion from non-religion by providing that while Congress may pass laws concerning many subjects and prohibiting many things, Congress may not make laws respecting the establishment of religion or prohibiting religious exercise. As the distinctiveness of religion is clear from the text, the Court has had no problem settling that religion, as a subject matter, and religious believers, as a class of persons, are constitutionally distinct. Though not explicated in the text, it is equally clear, and equally settled, that the Religion Clauses tug the government in opposite directions. Noting this tension, …

Interests And Expectations Of The Confederated Tribes Of The Umatilla Indian Reservation Regarding Hanford And Hanford-Affected Lands, Confederated Tribes Of Umatilla Indian Reservation

Confederated Tribes of Umatilla Indian Reservation

This document updates the previous document “Scoping Report: Nuclear Risks in Tribal Communities” prepared by Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR) in 1995. At the time, “no comprehensive or sitewide evaluation of risks and costs has been performed at Hanford.” A decade later, this is still true. It is also still true that “a full risk picture must include addressing the impacts over time.”

This report provides a more docused perspective on how to establish both technically and politically defensible environmental management approach in an era of continued fiscal constraints. This was true in 1995 and is even …

Alternative First Exon Splicing Regulates Subcellular Distribution Of Methionine Sulfoxide Reductases, Hwa-Young Kim, Vadim Gladyshev Mar 2006

Alternative First Exon Splicing Regulates Subcellular Distribution Of Methionine Sulfoxide Reductases, Hwa-Young Kim, Vadim Gladyshev

Vadim Gladyshev Publications

Background: Methionine sulfoxide reduction is an important protein repair pathway that protects against oxidative stress, controls protein function and has a role in regulation of aging. There are two enzymes that reduce stereospecifically oxidized methionine residues: MsrA (methionine-Ssulfoxide reductase) and MsrB (methionine-R-sulfoxide reductase). In many organisms, these enzymes are targeted to various cellular compartments. In mammals, a single MsrA gene is known, however, its product is present in cytosol, nucleus, and mitochondria. In contrast, three mammalian MsrB genes have been identified whose products are located in different cellular compartments.
Results: In the present study, we identified and characterized alternatively spliced …

Continued Wetlands Assessment, Inventory And Prime Wetlands Designation In Hampton And Hampton Falls, Hampton Falls Conservation Commission

PREP Reports & Publications

The purpose of this project was to continue to provide educational efforts on wetlands functions and values, prime wetlands designation, aerial and on-the-ground inventory findings, wildlife habitat, and New Hampshire’s Prime Wetlands laws and rules for the communities of Hampton and Hampton Falls, which was the project focus area. The project incorporated the first phase (phase I) of this wetland inventory report, which focused on the Taylor River Watershed. That initial assessment included the Taylor River as it flows through both Hampton and Hampton Falls, a portion of Ash Brook and Old River as it flows through Hampton, and Grapevine …
