The Regenstrief Center For Healthcare Engineering: Designing, Implementing And Sustaining Interdisciplinary Solutions To Transform Healthcare Delivery Systems, Steve Witz, Joseph Pekny, Leroy Schwarz

RCHE Publications

With start-up funding provided by the Regenstrief Foundation, Purdue University has created the Regenstrief Center for Healthcare Engineering (RCHE) to design, implement, and sustain interdisciplinary solutions to improve the safety, quality, efficiency and accessibility of healthcare delivery systems. RCHE’s primary goal is to bring a systems-analysis approach to improving the processes of healthcare delivery, not to provide tools or techniques for medical research, diagnosis, or treatment. This article will describe RCHE’s business model; that is, how RCHE “engineers” interdisciplinary solutions, using the multiple perspectives of healthcare and multiple project time scales to organize and leverage healthcare delivery transformation. We then …

Effects Of Sapk/Jnk Inhibitors On Preimplantation Mouse Embryo Development Are Influenced Greatly By The Amount Of Stress Induced By The Media, Yufen Xie, E. E. Puscheck, D. A. Rappolee Mar 2006

Effects Of Sapk/Jnk Inhibitors On Preimplantation Mouse Embryo Development Are Influenced Greatly By The Amount Of Stress Induced By The Media, Yufen Xie, E. E. Puscheck, D. A. Rappolee

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Research Publications

Stress-activated protein kinase/c-Jun kinase (SAPK/JNK) is thought to be necessary for preimplantation embryonic development (Maekawa et al., 2005). However, media increases SAPK/JNK phosphorylation and these levels negatively correlate with embryonic development (Wang et al., 2005). Culture-induced stress could confuse analysis of the role of SAPK in development. In this study, we tested how SAPK/JNK inhibitors influence embryonic development in optimal and non-optimal media and define the contribution of cell survival and proliferation to the embryonic response to these media. SAPK/JNK inhibitors retard embryonic development in suboptimal Ham’s F10, but improve development in optimal potassium (K+) simplex optimized media (KSOM) +AA. …

A Feminist Perspective On The Precautionary Principle And The Problem Of Endocrine Disruptors Under Neoliberal Globalization Policies, Erica Hesch Anstey Mar 2006

A Feminist Perspective On The Precautionary Principle And The Problem Of Endocrine Disruptors Under Neoliberal Globalization Policies, Erica Hesch Anstey

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Industrialization and "development" during the last 200 years have led to an increase of pesticides, an intensified use of synthetic chemicals, higher levels of environmental pollution, and more exposure to hazardous working conditions. Environmental toxins, many of which are endocrine disruptors, are stored in fat tissue, increasing reproductive health risks for both women and men. Women’s bodies are particularly vulnerable as sites for creating, growing, feeding, and nurturing the next generation. And yet, women’s lives are consistently devalued, especially in a capitalist economy, so that a woman’s rights to her own reproductive health are no longer guaranteed.

A Comparative Genomic Analysis Of Chlorella Nc64a Virus Ny-2a And Chlorella Pbi Virus Mt325 From The Family Phycodnaviridae, Lisa A. Fitzgerald Mar 2006

A Comparative Genomic Analysis Of Chlorella Nc64a Virus Ny-2a And Chlorella Pbi Virus Mt325 From The Family Phycodnaviridae, Lisa A. Fitzgerald

Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The family Phycodnaviridae consists of a morphologically similar but genetically diverse group of large dsDNA viruses which infect both fresh and marine water eukaryotic algae. Two viruses, the 370 kb Chlorella NC64A virus NY-2A and the 313 kb Chlorella Pbi virus MT325, from the family Phycodnaviridae, genus Chlorovirus, were sequenced, analyzed, and compared to the prototype chlorella virus PBCV-1. The NY-2A genome, the largest chlorella viral genome sequenced to date, contains 886 open reading frames (ORFs) of 65 codons or larger and encodes 404 putative proteins and 7 tRNAs. The MT325 genome, the smallest chlorella viral genome sequenced to date, …

Law In The Cultivation Of Hope, Kathryn R. Abrams, Hila Keren Mar 2006

Law In The Cultivation Of Hope, Kathryn R. Abrams, Hila Keren

ExpressO

In recent years scholars have begun to question the longstanding dichotomization of (legal) reason and the passions, and have offered significant understanding of the connection of law and the emotions. Much of this work, however, has been done within a fairly narrow ambit. This Article seeks to broaden this scholarship in two ways. First, it points to an unexplored relation between law and the emotions: the role of law in cultivating the emergence of emotions. And second, it moves beyond the negative emotions, and directs attention to positive emotions and their interplay with the law outside the criminal context. Following …

Beef Export Verification Program For Japan, Mark Halstead, Darrell R. Mark Mar 2006

Beef Export Verification Program For Japan, Mark Halstead, Darrell R. Mark

Cornhusker Economics

After regaining beef export trade with Japan in December 2005, export rule violations prompted Japan to reinstate its beef trade ban on January 20, 2006. While it is uncertain when trade will resume, it is incumbent upon the entire U.S. beef industry to understand the rules for beef export to Japan. These rules are established in USDA’s Beef Export Verification (BEV) Program for Japan. This BEV Program applies to companies, producers, feedlots, slaughterers and fabricators who supply beef and beef offal for export to Japan. Suppliers must comply with the specified product requirements under the USDA BEV Program for Japan …

Assessment Of Image Analysis As A Measure Of Scleractinian Coral Growth, Steven K. Gustafson Mar 2006

Assessment Of Image Analysis As A Measure Of Scleractinian Coral Growth, Steven K. Gustafson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Image analysis was used to measure basal areas of selected colonies of Montastraea annularis and Porites astreoides, following the colonies over a three-year period from 2002 to 2004. Existing digital images of permanently-marked quadrats in the Caye Caulker Marine Reserve, Belize, were selected based on image quality and availability of images of selected quadrats for all three years. Annual growth rates were calculated from the basal-area measurements. Mean growth rates (radial skeletal extension) for M. annularis and P. astreoides were 0.02 cm yr-1 and -0.20 cm yr-1, respectively. Basal area measurements demonstrated a large degree of variability. Increases were approximately …

Dynamic Monitoring Of Cytotoxicity Using Electric Cell Substrate Impendence Sensing, Alfred Brian Wafula Mar 2006

Dynamic Monitoring Of Cytotoxicity Using Electric Cell Substrate Impendence Sensing, Alfred Brian Wafula

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Electric cell-substrate impedance sensing (ECIS) pioneered by Giaever and Keese is suitable for continuous, automatic and real-time cell attachment analysis. ECIS is a novel electrical method to study, in real time, many of the activities of animal cells when grown in tissue culture. These include morphological changes, cell locomotion, and other behaviors directed by the cell's cytoskeleton. One of the most direct ECIS measurements is that of the attachment and spreading behaviors of cells. These measurements allow one to study and quantify the interaction of cultured cells with extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins and other macromolecules continuously and in real time. …

Walt Whitman: Twentieth-Century Mass Media Appearances, Andrew Jewell, Kenneth M. Price Mar 2006

Walt Whitman: Twentieth-Century Mass Media Appearances, Andrew Jewell, Kenneth M. Price

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

Mass media, the various means of communication designed to reach a large portion of the public, include but are not limited to film, radio, television, advertising, popular music, the internet, newspapers, and magazines. Whitman’s appearances in mass media have not been studied much, though they deserve attention because the evolving uses of his image and words can illuminate important aspects of his cultural afterlife. Until the 1960s, Whitman was invoked with surprising frequency as an icon of high literary stature. Advertisers in particular relied on his fame – not on his challenges to orthodox thinking and ordinary social arrangements – …

Developing Reasoned Framework For International Choice With Criminal Procedure, Nancy D. Erbe Mar 2006

Developing Reasoned Framework For International Choice With Criminal Procedure, Nancy D. Erbe

ExpressO

While scholars fiercely debate retributive versus restorative justice within the U.S. criminal system, the international community is quietly, steadily and creatively combining the two. Fortunately, enough case study material exists to begin identifying a rational framework to guide future procedural choice.
