Ethnobotanical Study Of Economic Trees: Uses Of Trees As Timbers And Fuelwoods In Ilorin Emirate Of Kwara State, Nigeria, A. A. Abdulrahaman, O. J. Fajemiroye, F. A. Oladele

Tree species such as Pterocarpus erinaceus, Parkia biglobosa, Prosobis africana, Trichilia emetica, Anogeissus leiocarpus, Danielia oliveri, Khaya senegalensis, Tectonia grandis, Milicia excelsa and Vitellaria paradoxa are popular among the inhabitants as fuelwoods, with Vitellaria paradoxa being the most frequently used. The Predicament Of Nature: Keiko The Whale And The Cultural Politics Of Whaling In Iceland, Anne Brydon Apr 2006

The Predicament Of Nature: Keiko The Whale And The Cultural Politics Of Whaling In Iceland, Anne Brydon

Anthropology Faculty Publications

This cultural analysis reconsiders the modernist narrative about the politics of whales and whale hunting in order to explore Icelandic responses to the return of the killer whale Keiko (star of the Free Willy movies) to Icelandic waters in 1998. Ambivalence about Keiko’s plight required cultural creativity to block identification with the whale since in Icelandic hegemonic discourse such feelings have been associated with the supposed irrationality of foreign protests against whale hunting. This essay draws on Bruno Latour’s writings about the politics of nature to argue for abandoning nature in a step toward the ethnographic study of human-nonhuman relations.

Feasibility Of The Reintroduction Of Wolves In Maine: A Gis Study, Caitlin Cleaver ('06), Liza Mitchell ('08), Caroline Polgar ('06), Samuel Weeks ('06)

Atlas of Maine

The eastern timber wolf (Canis lupus lycaon) once inhabited Maine, as well as the rest of the eastern United States and southern Canada. As a result of human land use and widespread extermination campaigns, wolf numbers dramatically decreased, and by the early twentieth century, no wolves remained in Maine. As large carnivorous and territorial mammals, wolves require contiguous undeveloped areas with abundant prey. This project is a feasibility study that identifies the areas in Maine that are suitable for the reintroduction of wolves. We used GIS modeling to identify contiguous forested areas over 1,000 km2, calculate road and population density, …

Exogenous Expression Of Human Na, K-Atpase Isoforms In Insect Cells, Christal Renee' Carpenter Apr 2006

Exogenous Expression Of Human Na, K-Atpase Isoforms In Insect Cells, Christal Renee' Carpenter

McCabe Thesis Collection

The Na-K-ATPase or Na pump is a membrane bound enzyme that maintains a high concentration of K+ and low concentration of Na+ in most animal cells. Three subunits constitute the Na pump, named alpha (ex), beta (~). and gamma (y). The ex subunit is responsible for the catalytic and transport of the enzyme, the ~ subunit is important for bringing the ex to the plasma membrane of the cell, and y is a regulatory subunit of the Na pump. In addition, there are several molecular variants or isoforms of the ex and ~ subunits. At present four different ex (ex …

Influence Of Rapid Growth On Skeletal Adaptation To Exercise, Bonny Specker Apr 2006

Influence Of Rapid Growth On Skeletal Adaptation To Exercise, Bonny Specker

Ethel Austin Martin Program Publications

During rapid growth, increased body weight and muscle strength result in increased loads on bone. Bone adapts to these increased strains by increasing bone modeling and remodeling. As the growth rate decreases, bone that was formed as a result of these adaptations continues to mineralize and "catch up", and bone modeling and remodeling decreases. Bone benefits of exercise in childhood are reported in some studies, although we observed less BMC gain at trabecular-rich sites during the peri-pubertal period in children who jumped than those who did not. Data from 13 existing pediatric exercise studies were compiled to determine whether similar …

Flarr Pages #52: The Language Of Medieval Mystics: Teaching With Hildegard Of Bingen And Catherine Of Siena, Jennifer Deane

FLARR Pages

Between roughly the years 1050 and 1500, a flowering of new spiritual expressions, forms and ideas took root in western Europe. One of these was mysticism,. the belief that one can achieve direct consciousness of (and connection with) the divine through contemplation, intuition and meditation. The compelling stories and writings of medieval female mystics such as Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) and Catherine of Siena (1347-1380) offer unique ideas, images and topics for German, Italian and Latin language instruction.
