Breathing Easier About Air Quality, Joel Schwartz Apr 2006

Breathing Easier About Air Quality, Joel Schwartz

Center for Applied Economics

Most people associate air pollution with automobiles and factories. But air pollution has been a part of human existence for thousands of years, and accounts of noxious urban air go back to ancient times. The Roman statesman Seneca bemoaned, “the stink, soot, and heavy air” of Rome in 61 AD.1 London has suffered from air pollution since the Middle Ages, when coal became a common fuel in smithies and lime burners. The problem was bad enough that King Edward I in 1285 created a commission to improve the city’s air quality.2

Today, despite vast increases in energy production, motorized transportation, …

Many Versions of Masculine: An Exploration of Boys’ Identity Formation through Digital Storytelling in an Afterschool Program
By Glynda A. Hull, Nora L. Kenney, Stacy Marple, & Ali Forsman-Schneider
Both scholarly literature and popular media often depict predominantly negative and one-dimensional images of boys, especially African-American boys. Predictions of these boys’ anticipated difficulties in school and adulthood are equally prevalent. This paper reports qualitative research that features case studies of nine urban boys of color, aged nine to eleven, who participated in an afterschool program where they learned to create digital multimedia texts. Drawing on an analysis of the children’s …

Intellectual Property Management Strategies To Accelerate The Development And Access Of Vaccines And Diagnostics: Case Studies On Pandemic Influenza, Malaria And Sars, Anatole Krattiger, Stanley P. Kowalski, Robert Eiss, Anthony Taubman

Law Faculty Scholarship

Achieving global access to vaccines, diagnostics, and pharmaceuticals remains a challenge. Throughout the developing world, intellectual property (IP) constraints complicate access to critically essential medical technologies and products. Vaccines for malaria and pandemic strains of influenza, as well as diagnostic and vaccine technologies for SARS, are not only relevant to global public health but are particularly critical to the needs of developing countries. A global access solution is urgently needed. This article offers a timely case‐by‐case analysis of preliminary patent landscape surveys and formulates options via patent pools and other forms of creative IP management to accelerate development and access. …

Effect Of Investigator Disturbance In Experimental Forensic Entomology: Succession And Community Composition, G. D. De Jong, W. W. Hoback Apr 2006

Effect Of Investigator Disturbance In Experimental Forensic Entomology: Succession And Community Composition, G. D. De Jong, W. W. Hoback

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Carrion insect succession studies have historically used repeated sampling of single or a few carcasses to produce data, either weighing the carcasses, removing a qualitative subsample of the fauna present, or both, on every visit over the course of decomposition and succession. This study, conducted in a set of related experimental hypotheses with two trials in a single season, investigated the effect that repeated sampling has on insect succession, determined by the number of taxa collected on each visit and by community composition. Each trial lasted at least 21 days, with daily visits on the first 14 days. Rat carcasses …

Field Peas In Diets Fed To Swine, Hans H. Stein Apr 2006

Field Peas In Diets Fed To Swine, Hans H. Stein

SDSU Extension Special Series

Field peas (Pisum sativum L.) have a nutrient profile intermediate between corn and soybean meal. The digestibility of most nutrients in field peas is similar to that in soybean meal, and the concentration of digestible energy in field peas is similar to that in corn.
Although the digestibility of most nutrients may be improved by thermal treatment, field peas are usually fed to swine without prior heat treatment. Pigs tolerate field peas well and the palatability of diets containing field peas is not different from diets containing only corn and soybean meal.
Recent research with U.S.-grown field peas indicates that …
