Some Significant Wildlife Strikes To Civil Aircraft In The United States, January 2005 –March 2006, Sandra E. Wright, Richard A. Dolbeer

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, through an interagency agreement with the Federal Aviation Administration, compiles a database of all reported wildlife strikes to U.S. civil aircraft and to foreign carriers experiencing strikes in the USA. We have compiled over 66,000 strike reports from 1,565 airports, 1990-December 2005 (over 7,100 strikes in 2005), but estimate that this represents only about 20% of the strikes that have occurred. The following examples from the database since January 2005 are presented to show the serious impacts that strikes by birds or other wildlife can have on aircraft. These examples, from throughout the USA, demonstrate …

An Investigation On The Importance Of Material Anisotropy In Finite-Element Modeling Of The Human Femur, Ryan Krone, Peter Schuster Apr 2006

An Investigation On The Importance Of Material Anisotropy In Finite-Element Modeling Of The Human Femur, Ryan Krone, Peter Schuster

Mechanical Engineering

Detailed finite element modeling of the human body offers a potential major enhancement to the prediction of injury risk during vehicle impacts. Currently, vehicle crash safety countermeasure development is based on a combination of testing with established anthropomorphic test devices (i.e., ATD or dummy) and a mixture of multi-body (dummy) and finite element (vehicle) modeling. If a relatively simple finite element model can be developed to capture additional information beyond the capabilities of the multi-body systems, it would allow improved countermeasure development through more detailed prediction of performance.

A simpler finite element model of human bones could be developed if …

The Influence Of Roads On The Florida Panther, Autumn C. Schwab Apr 2006

The Influence Of Roads On The Florida Panther, Autumn C. Schwab

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Florida panther (Puma concolor coryi) is a relatively well studied species, but some aspects of its habitat requirements remain poorly understood. While it has been well established that the most important threat to panthers include limited habitat area and continued habitat loss and fragmentation, the importance of roads in this context has not been determined. The goal of this research is to determine the influence of roads on the movement patterns of the Florida panther. Panther telemetry data from 1981 until 2003 was used, as well as detailed road networks and vegetation maps. The influence of roads on individual …

West Nile Virus In North American Birds, Robert G. Mclean Apr 2006

West Nile Virus In North American Birds, Robert G. Mclean

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Following the introduction of West Nile virus (WNV) into the United States, in New York City in 1999, from its historical range in the eastern hemisphere, this mosquito-borne virus caused an intense outbreak in local bird populations and a small epidemic in the associated human population. West Nile virus became established in this focal area, and in 2000 it spread north and south from there during the summer transmission season. The virus continued to expand during the next six years, ultimately affecting all the continental states and most of North America. The strain of WNV introduced was uncharacteristically virulent as …

Dubrovsky, Zoya V. Avramova

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

TheArabidopsis homolog of trithorax, ATX1, regulates numerous functions inArabidopsis beyond the homeotic genes. Here, we identified genome-wide targets of ATX1 and showed that ATX1 is a receptor for a lipid messenger, phosphatidylinositol 5-phosphate, PI5P. PI5P negatively affects ATX1 activity, suggesting a regulatory pathway connecting lipid-signaling with nuclear functions. We propose a model to illustrate how plants may respond to stimuli (external or internal) that elevate cellular PI5P levels by altering expression of ATX1-controlled genes.

Walt Whitman: Nineteenth-Century Popular Culture, Brett Barney Apr 2006

Walt Whitman: Nineteenth-Century Popular Culture, Brett Barney

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

Scholarship that traces connections between Whitman and so-called “subliterary” forms is valuable, as it makes us more competent readers, better equipped to navigate the allusive terrain of Whitman’s writing and to assess Whitman’s achievements in historical context. This essay will, in part, contribute to the growing “inventory” of Whitman’s affinities with currently devalued literary and social forms. In addition, though, I will attempt to redress the problem of anachronism that exists in current scholarship on Whitman and popular culture, exploring his literary career in the context of contemporaneous nineteenth-century understandings of culture. Lawrence Levine has pointed out that to define …
