The Mucilage Of Opuntia Ficus Indica: A Natural, Sustainable, And Viable Water Treatment Technology For Use In Rural Mexico For Reducing Turbidity And Arsenic Contamination In Drinking Water, Kevin Andrew Young Apr 2006

The Mucilage Of Opuntia Ficus Indica: A Natural, Sustainable, And Viable Water Treatment Technology For Use In Rural Mexico For Reducing Turbidity And Arsenic Contamination In Drinking Water, Kevin Andrew Young

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The use of natural environmentally benign agents in the treatment of drinking water is rapidly gaining interest due to their inherently renewable character and low toxicity. We show that the common Mexican cactus produces a gum-like substance, cactus mucilage, which shows excellent flocculating abilities and is an economically viable alternative for low-income communities. Cactus mucilage is a neutral mixture of approximately 55 high-molecular weight sugar residues composed basically of arabinose, galactose, rhamnose, xylose, and galacturonic acid. We show how this natural product was characterized for its use as a flocculating agent. Our results show the mucilage efficiency for reducing arsenic …

Secondary Seed Dispersal Of Longleaf Pine, Pinus Palustris, And Sand Live Oak, Quercus Geminata, In Florida Sandhill, Shannon Elizabeth Ansley Apr 2006

Secondary Seed Dispersal Of Longleaf Pine, Pinus Palustris, And Sand Live Oak, Quercus Geminata, In Florida Sandhill, Shannon Elizabeth Ansley

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Studies of secondary seed dispersal by small mammals have largely been focused on the interaction between nut-bearing tree species and sciurid rodents such as squirrels, and on heteromyid rodents in the southwestern United States. However, there is now evidence that wind-dispersed tree species such as pines also undergo a process of secondary seed dispersal, where animals redistribute (cache) seeds that have already fallen to the ground, often in microhabitats more suitable for successful seed germination. In Florida sandhill, where fire suppression has threatened wind-dispersed longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) by encouraging the encroachment of hardwoods such as sand live oak (Quercus …

A Study Of Islamic Leadership Theory And Practice In K-12 Islamic Schools In Michigan, Adnan Ibrahim Aabed Apr 2006

A Study Of Islamic Leadership Theory And Practice In K-12 Islamic Schools In Michigan, Adnan Ibrahim Aabed

Theses and Dissertations

Effective leadership in Islamic schools involves the incorporation of Islamic principles in the leadership behaviors and practices. With so much literature about the need of Islamic leadership in Islamic institutions in the United States, the problem addressed by the study was whether school principals in Islamic schools exhibited and led these schools according to the principles of Islamic leadership. The study described leadership approaches used by school principals in Islamic schools and how those leadership approaches were influenced by Islamic leadership principles, comparing the Islamic leadership principles derived from the literature with the leadership principles of principals of Islamic schools. …

This study focused on the use of bibliotherapy by school psychologists. A survey was created and distributed to 119 registered and licensed school psychologists in Utah to obtain information on this topic. Forty-one percent returned a completed survey. Results indicated that bibliotherapy is used by 82% of the participants in the study, and 31 of 34 (91%) use bibliotherapy with children grades K-6. Topics most used with bibliotherapy included self-esteem, bullying, divorce, anxiety, and grief. Efficacy varied depending on the topic of bibliotherapy. However, school psychologists regarded bibliotherapy across all topics to be very effective to effective.

Modeling The Advantages And Disadvantages Of The Coral-Algal Symbiosis, Dana Joy Gaydos Apr 2006

Modeling The Advantages And Disadvantages Of The Coral-Algal Symbiosis, Dana Joy Gaydos

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Coral reefs thrive in nutrient-deficient environments yet function among the most productive ecosystems on Earth as a consequence of the symbiosis between coral hosts and their symbiotic zooxanthellae. The symbiotic unit (holobiont) can utilize both inorganic and organic sources of nutrients for the accumulation of carbon and nitrogen required for metabolism, growth, and reproduction. An iterative model was created to describe the flux of carbon and nitrogen between a host and its algae. The model design is based on a previously published conceptual model of algal symbioses; functions and values of input parameters are based on published studies of the …

Myth, Folklore And Ancient Justice, Stuart Madden Apr 2006

Myth, Folklore And Ancient Justice, Stuart Madden

ExpressO

In primitive and civilized cultures alike, myth has served as a foundational component of social structure and societal cultural self-image. For peoples with limitation on their skills of scientific inquiry and/or detached social observation, myth has served purposes ranging from explanation of the natural world to early visions of civil justice and a moral ethos. Such application of myth has necessarily and simultaneously provided adherents with the means of rationalizing the caprice and harshness of the natural world, as well as giving a means of accepting, even a fatalism, concerning injustice.

In general terms, myths and mythic figures have provided …

The United States' Experience With Energy-Based Tax Incentives: The Evidence Supporting Tax Incentives For Renewable Energy, Mona L. Hymel Apr 2006

The United States' Experience With Energy-Based Tax Incentives: The Evidence Supporting Tax Incentives For Renewable Energy, Mona L. Hymel

ExpressO

Developing sustainable markets for renewable energy technologies presents complex challenges. Financial, institutional and informational obstacles impede advancement of these technologies. Tax incentives are often utilized to assist policy makers in dealing with these challenges. Because tax incentives and subsidies generally decrease governmental revenues, understanding their costs and benefits is critical in determining policy choices. For almost 90 years the United States has granted tax incentives, direct subsidies and other support to the energy industry in an effort to enhance U.S. energy supplies. Historically, those incentives targeted only the petroleum industry. Since the late 1970s, however, Congress has enacted incentives to …

The Anchor, Volume 119.19: April 5, 2006, Hope College

The Anchor: 2006

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Antibiotic-Conjugated Polyacrylate Nanoparticles: New Opportunities For Development Of Anti-Mrsa Agents, Yang Wang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

N-Thiolated β-lactams represent a novel family of antibacterial agents, whose in vitro activity is confined largely to Staphylococcus species, including multidrug-resistant forms of S. aureus. N-Thiolated β-lactams have recently been shown to possess intriguing biological activities which are addressed in Chapter II. Current development of nanoparticles as a new drug delivery vehicle is described in Chapter III. Chapter IV and V described the current research in our laboratories focusing on the synthesis and characterization of emulsified polyacrylate/polyacrylamide nanoparticle antibacterials for drug delivery of water-insoluble antibiotics. These nanoparticles can be prepared in aqueous media directly from acrylate/acrylamide monomers through free …

Cattle Lease Checklist, J. David Aiken Apr 2006

Cattle Lease Checklist, J. David Aiken

Cornhusker Economics

Some producers find it advantageous to lease their cattle to other producers either for cash or for a share of the calf crop. This may be in the course of ultimately transferring the herd — e.g., to a child or other new owner. It may also be used by a producer who has been forced to liquidate his/her herd and wishes to re-establish a new herd. This checklist has been adapted from Doye, Sahs & Coe, Breeding Livestock Lease Agreements, F-571 and Doye, Sahs & Coe, Stocker Livestock Lease Agreements, F-572 (Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service).

Multiple Intelligences: What It Is And Why It's Vital Today, Emma Zevik

Faculty Journal Articles

Perspectives on adult learning have changed dramatically over the decades. Defining intelligence has expanded in many different ways, from a traditional, basic view of gaining knowledge and skills to an enhanced view of developing a process of critical self-reflection leading to transformation.
