Natural Disturbances And The Physiognomy Of Pine Savannas : A Phenomenological Model, Frank S. Gilliam, William J. Platt, Robert K. Peet

Biological Sciences Faculty Research

Abstract. Question: The decline of the Pinus palustris ecosystems has resulted from anthropogenic influences, such as conversion to pine plantation forestry, agriculture and land development, all of which are closely related to increases in human populations. Other effects, however, have arisen from alterations in disturbance regimes that maintain the structure and function of these ecosystems. How have alterations of the disturbance regime altered the physiognomy of ‘old-growth’ stands, and what are the implications for ecosystem conservation and restoration?

Methods: In contrast to models that emphasize close interactions among the vertically complex strata, we develop a conceptual phenomenological model for the …

Proximate And Ultimate Mechanisms Associated With Female Secondary Coloration In The Mexican Boulder Spiny Lizard, (Sceloporus Pyrocephalus), Rebecca Marie Calisi May 2006

Proximate And Ultimate Mechanisms Associated With Female Secondary Coloration In The Mexican Boulder Spiny Lizard, (Sceloporus Pyrocephalus), Rebecca Marie Calisi

Biology Theses - Archive

Secondary sexual coloration is thought to be the result of runaway selection for signals that honestly communicate relative fitness. Much theoretical work suggests sexual selection has driven conspicuous secondary traits in males while natural selection has driven inconspicuous traits in females; however, in some species, bright female secondary coloration does exist. I used the Mexican boulder spiny lizard (Sceloporus pyrocephalus) as a model to examine secondary coloration in females. Adult females of S. pyrocephalus have conspicuously colored gular regions, ranging from red, orange, to yellow, while adult males weakly express color in the gular region. Both sexes have dark stripes …

The Promethean

The way of the creative works through change and transformation, so that each thing receives its true nature and destiny and comes into permanent accord with the Great Harmony: this is what furthers and what perseveres. -Alexander Pope

Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good, and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2

This year we honor our namesake, Prometheus, known in Greek mythology as the patron of human civilization. When presented with the task of filling the earth with …

Rezidential Housing: A Prototype For The Winnebago Tribe, Alissa Piere

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

This project investigates the current housing challenges of the Winnebago Indian Reservation located in Northeast Nebraska. The project will develop prototypical solutions to the housing problems and design the residential environment on the reservation at three different levels: 1- the domestic unit itself, 2- at the level of the immediate community formed by the clustering homes within a neighborhood and the indoor/outdoor spaces they share, and 3- at the level of the site plan. Mentors: Zeynep Kezer and Martin Despang.

Education In Transition: An Urban Middle School, Jeremy L. Carlson

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

The main objective of this project is to successfully design a middle school in downtown Omaha Nebraska. With the development of nearly a dozen condominiums in the downtown Omaha area, representing over 400 units, (Omaha World Herald 11-29-2004) there presents a need for a middle school that is currently missing in the downtown area.

Downtown Omaha currently has an elementary school and a high school in the area. A middle school downtown will complete the educational infrastructure in the downtown area.

The majority of the school population will be students living in the area, but also will accommodate those families …

Garden District Station: A Proposal For Transit-Oriented Development In St. Louis, Charles Closser May 2006

Garden District Station: A Proposal For Transit-Oriented Development In St. Louis, Charles Closser

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

The presence of light rail is increasing across the United States. This mode of transportation provides unique opportunities to serve as a catalyst for new developments and redevelopments. This document studies what types of redevelopment can be stimulated by the expansion of Metro Link (St. Louis’s light rail system) into the Gardens District. The information gathered is used to present urban design strategies and an architectural solution for a transit-oriented development.

A Program To Increase Creative Consciousness Through Drawing, Craig P. Puffer May 2006

A Program To Increase Creative Consciousness Through Drawing, Craig P. Puffer

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

This project assumes that in the development of many children between the ages of five and eleven, a link exists between three observable phenomena: (1) the collapse of their ability to learn on their own; (2) the collapse of their creative abilities; and (3) the collapse of their willingness and ability to draw. Our society holds artists up as exemplars of creativity, and many adults seem to accept the following logical progression: (a) artists are creative; (b) artists can draw; (c) I can’t draw; (d) therefore, I’m no artist; and therefore, (e) I’m not very creative. However, as quadriplegics can …

Evaluation Of Toxicity Following Electrically Mediated Interleukin-12 Gene Delivery In A B16 Mouse Melanoma Model, Loree Heller, Kathleen Merkler, Jeffrey Westover, Yolmari Cruz, Domenico Coppola, Kaaron Benson, Adil Daud, Richard Heller May 2006

Evaluation Of Toxicity Following Electrically Mediated Interleukin-12 Gene Delivery In A B16 Mouse Melanoma Model, Loree Heller, Kathleen Merkler, Jeffrey Westover, Yolmari Cruz, Domenico Coppola, Kaaron Benson, Adil Daud, Richard Heller

Bioelectrics Publications

PURPOSE: Interleukin-12 (IL-12) has potential as an immunotherapeutic agent for the treatment of cancer but is unfortunately associated with toxicity. Delivery of a plasmid encoding IL-12 with electroporation induces an antitumor effect in the B16 mouse melanoma model without serious side effects. To translate this observation to the clinic, an evaluation of toxicity was done in the mouse model.

EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Weight change, tumor response, blood chemistry and hematology values, and serum IL-12 levels were evaluated. Multiple tissues were analyzed histopathologically.

RESULTS: A pronounced reduction in tumor volume, including a large percentage of complete regressions, was observed after electrically mediated …

Fisheries Occasional Publication No. 35 - Rock Lobster Processor Licensing Arrangements (Discussion Paper), Department Of Fisheries Western Australia

Fisheries Occasional Publications

On 28 March 2002, the Minister for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Hon Kim Chance MLC, announced the Government's position on National Competition Policy (NCP) insofar as this policy related to licensing of western rock lobster processors (hitherto referred to as 'rock lobster processors' or simply as 'processors'), as governed by the provisions of the Fish Resources Management Act 1994 (FRMA).

In making the announcement, the Minister also undertook to further "review the potential costs and risks of deregulation" ..."in 2006", when they "are better understood by both Government and industry itself'.

This document is the first stage of the review …

Small-Scale Fuel Variation Alters Fire Intensity And Shrub Abundance In A Pine Savanna, Jarrod M. Thaxton, William J. Platt May 2006

Small-Scale Fuel Variation Alters Fire Intensity And Shrub Abundance In A Pine Savanna, Jarrod M. Thaxton, William J. Platt

Faculty Publications

Small-scale variation in fire intensity and effects may be an important source of environmental heterogeneity in frequently burned plant communities. We hypothesized that variation in fire intensity resulting from local differences in fuel loads produces heterogeneity in pine savanna ground cover by altering shrub abundance. To test this hypothesis, we experimentally manipulated prefire fuel loads to mimic naturally occurring fuel-load heterogeneity associated with branch falls, needle fall near large pines, and animal disturbances in a frequently burned longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) savanna in Louisiana, USA. We applied one of four fuel treatments (unaltered control, fine-fuel removal, fine-fuel addition, wood addition) …
